Olivier Giroud says the 1-1 draw at Southampton, secured courtesy of his late header, represents a good point for the Gunners against traditionally tough opponents.
The Frenchman came off the bench to score with three minutes remaining and in so doing equalled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 17-goal record for strikes by a substitute.
Reflecting on the match, Giroud told BT Sport: “I always try to bring something for the team when I come on the pitch.
“Today we missed a bit of players in the box so I tried to bring it. It was a good cross from Alexis, I tried to be at the right place at the right time.
“It’s nice to come back as from the start of the second half we were pushing. We are pleased with this point as it’s always difficult to play them [Southampton].”
He added: “The boss said we want to start strong and finish strong but at the beginning of the game we’ve been caught behind our defenders.
“Charlie [Austin] did well, he could have scored a brace but thankfully for us, it was only 1-0 and we could come back at the end. It’s a good point.”
Saints have been poor at home most of the year, shame we played them as they have picked up. My Saints supporting friend says they have started to pass forward finally
Fair result.
Giroud is a great substitute btw. Soon to have the most goals of any substitute in the PL.
He does have a point
Graceful and classy. Even the picture suggests it. Definitely want to see him paired with Lacazette, with Wilshere and Ozil included too as Laca makes timely runs and Giroud is clinical with headers and strong hold up play, while Jack with his 1-2s with Giroud and going at defences, all the while our very own Özil being our complete playmaker. It hurts to see complacency in the starting XI when there are those raring to go and are hungry to WIN
It’s the old Wenger misplaced loyalty thing again. He’ll stick with those that are likely to depart at the end of the season, rather than look after those who want to play for this Great club.
By definition, every point is good. The result is bad though.
Time to sell Alexis, despite his assist today.
Just not doing enough to justify playing full 90 minutes, and has generally been the case this season thus far.
Liability recently. Probably over 100 turnovers in the last two weeks. How does that help?
No punk, it’s a poor point. We would’ve gained much needed ground. Thank goodness I didn’t bother waking up for this game.
How long will we keep throwing away Points against small teams. Should’ve beaten Watford, Stoke but we someone managed to cock up 6 points.
Time to wake up!!!
Actually we did gain ground on United and Chelsea as they both lost. Yes it’s only one point but it could turn out to be a vital one. Given we were so close to losing again I am not so disappointed.
What I am disappointed by is the players who had a midweek rest playing like utter shit. They have one thing to concentrate on and it takes one of our Europa League players to dig us out of the hole.
In the larger scheme of things : 1) we can forget about chasing City now. Only thing is if we can deny them an unbeaten season. 2) we may still have chance to get second best spot ( so celebrated by pundits on Spurts last season) 3) more realistic is to secure CL spot. Chelsea shed 3 points today. We are letting our shadow in Spurts closer again but k Most annoying is we could have leap frogged Klop and kop pony show themselves only drawing at Everton…courtesy of Shrek. Giroud added presence in the box for us and frankly… Read more »
off topic buthow annoying is duncan castles? -_- last week trying to justify stomp on bellerin , this week claiming an imaginary penalty ..isnt there supposed to be a minimum standard for being a journo?
It’s so ridiculous now that it doesn’t look too different from parody accounts.
Previous comment deleted for some reason. This was a poor point. We are 17 points behind city. We keep mucking up easy games like these.
no it wasn,t, it was two points lost
A good point. That sums up how our club has declined. It’s now a good season if we finish ahead of spurs and a great season if we finish in the top four.
We are two classes below city and one below Chelsea and man u. Those two clubs will buy players so they can compete with city. Arsenal will buy one player and get one on a free to save money and try to finish 4th.
No, Olivier, it isn’t.
But it was a lovely header and no doubt he should be pleased with that!
I love you Olivier
It’s interesting what Blogs said about people being less angry this year. If Giroud had said a draw against a team in the bottom half of the table was a good point in previous seasons, I feel the reaction would have been more vitriolic (no matter how the game went on the day). Here, a few people have complained, but his comments have mostly been accepted. I wonder if it really is a sign of people giving up hope of anything more than top 4? Maybe that is just being realistic these days. Personally, I don’t see this as a… Read more »

Guess a point that keeps Arse in the fight for a Europa league place is a good point.
