Wenger likes playing striker Welbeck as a striker

Arsene Wenger says that he prefers to play striker Danny Welbeck as a striker and says the striker’s best position is probably as a striker.

The England international, who was signed as a striker from Manchester United, looks set to play as a striker in the Europa League clash with Swedish side Ostersund tomorrow because fellow strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette can’t play as strikers because they are cup-tied and injured respectively.

The Gunners might have had other options to play striker but they sold three strikers last month to other sides who needed strikers.

Facing the media in Sweden ahead of tomorrow’s game, Wenger said: “[Playing as a central striker] is where I prefer him personally and it is where I believe that he has an opportunity to do well.

“He had to wait a little bit to get back in the team but that gave him time to work on his fitness and from what I have seen today he is sharper than [for] a long time. He looks very sharp.”

Arseblog News predicts Danny will start the game on the left.

Come on welbz. Shin a couple a in. Still like the dude. Comedy

Gooooooonnnnnnnaaaaaaaa

Shit happens, this is football. Welbeck has an amazing opportunity these next two games to prove to the manager what he can do. A fully fit and motivated Welbeck will be a headache for any defence, regardless to if he can be clinical or not. His work rate was immense in the fa cup final last season and I wanna see a bit more of that. Equally, if he doesn’t perform, that may give someone like Eddie the platform to shine. Excited to see how we’ll go about this tie, the snow and the pitch looks like it’s gonna be… Read more »

Simon

Who is this Eddie the platform?

That’s Eddie on the platform.

Nketibag

To be fair he always turns up for England when played CF. His whole career he’s been shunted out wide, excited to see him get a shot.

Bosscielny

He’ll score a perfect hattrick. Thigh, ass, back of the neck.

David C

I prefer the ole shoulder goal after he misses it with his head 🙂

lordMartynz

I was thinking the striker Welbeck will be played in goal???

Bai Blagoi

No, it is his turn to try as a left back.

Shank

its hard to be enthusiastic.

Anonymarse

nooo, it’s easy

just be ready to be disappointed

Lula

Seems not to be popular a view but I agree. I’m jaded with this. And I love arsenal and I am not going anywhere. But seriously jaded. I’m sure lots of people can understand the emotion even if they disagree with the assessment.

Pedant

A goal every 4 to 5 games, regardless of the club he played for. Would love it if he can disprove the doubters, which is just about all of us.

Though his England scoring record is 15 in 36 so a lot better. Hope he can bring that form to his Arsenal career.

Gio

Yes, his finishing is not up to scratch, but the goal ratio is also partly due to him being played out wide a lot. Even for United, he rarely started up front.

I seem to remember a year or two ago when Giroud was injured and Welbeck was given a run of games up front, he didn’t look bad at all. If I recall correctly he ended up getting injured himself soon after though and hasn’t had a proper run up front since.

Matt

I think we’d all love Welbeck to play like a striker.

Anonymarse

He’s done it before to be fair

Mayor McCheese

I’m not sure how I feel about Arsenal playing a player in their preferred position. Seems a touch out of character, and I’m a traditions man myself.

Bai Blagoi

I feel you, but these are desperate times. If you have to play somebody in their preferred position, you have suck it up and just do it.

QMantis

He’s all we got and I for one hope he has a great game playing in his best position and scores a classic of his back side! We’re gonna need him for an option now so good luck to him. Coyg

TR7 > CR7

Love Welbz. Some of his assists have been exemplary:

Terry+T

Outstanding. This is why I love this Blog ???

Jung Beans

It’s a striking blogpost, to be sure

Homer

Liverpool just tonked Porto 5-0.
Anyone think Arsenal will do the same to this Swedish side tomorrow?
(I don’t. Hope so. But I don’t think so.)

santori

Time was when we would look forward to going past the likes of Porto where instead we now fret over getting a result from the likes of an Ostersund.

“Don’t mind being out of CL for the Europa” they said. LOL.

Greg

No desire to be making the numbers up in the cl personally. All about the cash for afc not the glory of trying to win it

A P

Yes. Those cuntish posts remain fresh in the memory.

santori

Welbeck to be fair to him has been played out wide in recent season(s) He needs to be more central but we also (like Giroud) have to take advantage of his strengths. We need to be a little more direct and not try to pick our way through the eye of the needle all the time. Alas this teamlacks creative/wide players with pace now. So much so that we need the fullbacks to make the difference. Which creates its on set of problems. BOTH Monreal and Bellerin have been caught too high up. The opponents know we will press them… Read more »

Tldr

Nketibag

Can’t work out if you need your own blog, a word limit, or a muzzle.

Anonymarse

all of the above?

Stewart Pearson

A muzzle sounds best to me!

Dave

This formation makes far too much sense to be used.

Wendy Agnew

Chambers!!’are you mad?

A Different George

I didn’t understand your comment. Oh, I see, you read the post.

Sancheezy

Exactly 2 years ago I believe Welbz came off the bench and scored that awesome late winning goal against Leicester City. He can score goals… we must believe and get behind the team! #COYG

Andy Mack

When a manger has only one 1st team player available to play the next game as CF, he’s got to say that player is good in that position.
He’d be an idiot to say anything else.

bournegooner

You’ve got enough strikers there Blogs?

baz00r

Am I right in thinking that the other British players in the squad at the time had a rather large influence on Wenger deciding to sign Welbeck?

Faisal Narrage

Bring back Perez?
Either way, hoping on Welbz, but won’t hold me breathe.

Rather more excited for Eddie.

sambo

hes not in our europa squad so he cant play

Alexstratz

Bambi on ice (literlaly) is going to score a hattrick. Probably by accident, but who cares.

Cannonball

“Arseblog News predicts Danny will start the game on the left.”

Wtf man. I was sipping my drink when I read that one. The drink came out of my nose! And it was a hot tea!! You should be charged with murder attempt!

Tony grayson

One of the clumsiest looking strikers to ever wear the shirt…Gotta love his attitude and work rate though. Hope he can figure out how to kick a ball properly someday.

Morbs

That’s harsh. He’s up against some really tough competition to be “the clumsiest looking striker to ever wear the shirt”

Simon

Gervinho looks like Messi compared to Wellz and he would have to have been one of the clumsiest strikers we ever had.

Kinghenrythe14th

You must be new here; ever heard of Lord Sanogo?

Lula

Play two up front and stop offsetting for the fact we have a shit midfield. Actually get a Dembele when you have the chance. How about that?

Runzac

Fabian Delph played LB for City Tuesday. He´s a CM. Danilo, RB, came on and played as a CDM to shore things up. I could name many others. Modern football needs new ideas and approaches and locking players to one position is old fashioned.

Shambles

A striker playing as a striker? at arsenal?

Has the world gone mad?!!!!

Lula

Im sure he meant a false 9.5.

Heihaci

Just doesnt seem to be a natural finisher plus he is injury prone so cant see him lasting the whole europa league campaign

para

Well i never. A striker playing as a striker? What’s going on?

In the Name of Bergkamp 3:16

Let’s be honest. For all his faults, Chamakh was more prolific than Welbeck will ever be and that’s saying much. All well and good being a nice guy but football is a business and goals are the currency a striker is judged by; Welbeck is a poor fit for us.

Geefive

Ok. I’m pretty simple. I laughed far too much at that. Kudos, Blogs. Couldn’t help picturing Lloyd Bridges…

SharpasFc

Is no one else tired of hearing Arsene spout cr*p that he clearly doesn’t believe?
