Wenger: I want to finish my love story well

Tomorrow night’s Europa League semi-final second-leg tie against Atletico Madrid will be Arsene Wenger’s 250th tie as a coach in European competition.

It might be his last. It might not. That’s to be decided. It depends on what the boss does next.

Ahead of Thursday’s clash at the Wanda Metropolitano, the boss made clear that he’s desperate to draw a line under his 22 years at Arsenal on a high note.

“I don’t know what I will do next season,” he said on Wednesday when asked about what his future holds.

“At the moment, I would like to finish my job well. I believe a man has to give his best as long as he is somewhere, with all his commitment and energy.

“I would like one day to know I worked with all my energy until the last day. I would like to look back and think I finished this love affair well.”

Despite a European trophy eluding him thus far, the boss maintains that he takes huge pride in the fact that he’s been in the Champions League so regularly and that he’s driven to get the Gunners there again.

“I did that for 20 or 21 years, I don’t even know, to be in the Champions League. I want of course to achieve it.”

He went on: “In football you think you have seen it before but you can always discover new things. Every game surprises you – that’s why it is a new adventure. You never know what to expect. That’s why the excitement is the same.”

“It might be his last. It might not. That’s to be decided. It depends on what the boss does next.” More immediately, it depends on what the team does tonight. COYG!

Forgive me for being a bit personal, and a bit emotional. It’s been a turbulent season. My life has been this year too, as I creep up on my 42nd birthday. I’m moving across the country, back to my childhood city, where I grew up, and where all my friends are. I’m changing careers. I’ve got my very first motorcycle waiting for me on Saturday when I arrive. I’m moving in together with the most wonderful woman. And we’ve got a baby on the way. Not planned, but loved to bits. All things come to an end, but only for… Read more »

Beautiful words from the heart.
You are right, no matter what we should look back in joy on the Wenger era. He is the reason I became a fan.

I hope so much he’ll make to the final. Wenger deserves it.

I can’t predict the second leg at all.
If we play like in the first leg, the chances are really good.
Normally, such a game ends with 3:0 or higher.

But I’m not sure if we can do a similar job away from home.
Athletico is very happy with a 0:0. They’ll park the bus more than they did in the first leg

Holding V Costa 2 anyone? Reckon a 3 at the back would be the way to go
