Arsene Wenger has held his final ever pre-match press conference as Arsenal manager, ahead of Sunday’s game against Huddersfield.
The Gunners travel north looking to win their first away game of the calendar year having extended their winless run on the road to seven games courtesy of last night’s 3-1 defeat at Leicester.
Normally he provides an update on the team news, but the press conference was taken up with questions about his departure, his future, and his memories of being manager of Arsenal for 22 years.
There was lots to touch, but there was one particularly excellent moment when the Frenchman was asked if he was an emotional person.
He said he was, but then spoke about how he learned as a football manager that in order to survive in the job he had to keep his emotions in check. That led to this exchange:
Journalist: “Have we seen the real Arsene Wenger?”
AW: “Yes, you have seen the real Arsenal Wenger …”
There’s also a kind of symmetry that a great manager of this great club ends his career at Huddersfield from where another legendary manager came many years ago.
Wenger’s a good chap, man.
Merci Arsène! <3
Really thought his last press conference would go something more like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP3m22Kzu0k
