New boss to weigh up goalkeepers before making number 1 decision

Unai Emery says that he’ll trim the number of keepers at the club, and continue to assess the players he has before making a decision about who will be his number one.

Two weeks into his pre-season training, the Spaniard has been working with Petr Cech, new signing Bernd Leno, as well as Matt Macey and Emi Martinez, while David Ospina remains on an extended break after Colombia’s run in the World Cup.

Although Cech was given the number 1 shirt, it’s still not clear as to who will be his number 1 pick for the team, but when you spend £22.5m on a goalkeeper it suggests you’re buying him to be the main man.

Speaking earlier, the new head coach was asked about the situation, and said, “I want to work with Petr Cech, with Bernd Leno, with Emiliano Martinez, with Matt Macey, with Ospina.

“It’s clear that we have a lot of goalkeepers but we want to work in the future with three goalkeepers in the first team.

“Now, I want to look, I want to work every day with all the goalkeepers and then I am going to decide.”

The 46 year old former PSG boss also declared himself pleased with the work and effort he’s getting from the players as he prepares for the new Premier League season.

“They are working very hard,” he said. “They are working with the ambition that I want.

“I think the quality is high here, and I think together we will work with this quality and the details in the tactics.

“They will go with my ideas and work with my ideas every day, and this will help them to do these things on the pitch.”

COYG!! Let’s rip Man City one on the opening day and shut up the haters for a while. We ain’t no pushovers and while on paper we might be aiming for top 4, I hope and pray that we can put forward an extended run of wins and try and set up a title challenge. This team is as good as Liverpool’s and United’s. Man City might be a bit better than the rest right now, but if we manage to continue our home run of last season and get those crucial away points from the mid-table teams, we are… Read more »

If we beat Man City, haters will claim they were without their World Cup stars. If we beat Chelsea, they’ll blame delayed change in management. We should beat them because we are good, because haters will always hate: seeking to appease them won’t just happen.

I’m just intrigued and hopeful for the future. All we want is a trophy laden Arsenal. The efforts we are seeing in training are good,

It’s time to show Cech the door. If he wants to stay on as a coach then that’s fine, but we all know that he’s finished as a top keeper. The change at Arsenal this summer has been like a torrent of ice-cold fresh air: let’s not waste any more time living in the past with a past-it player. Give Leno the number 1 jersey and back him. Shame about England, wasn’t it? But they actually had a brilliant World Cup: they were never good enough to win it, so a semi-final place was a great achievement. And it was… Read more »

“A brilliant World Cup”. Really?
In the 6 games, they beat Tunisia, Panama, Sweden and Colombia on penalties. The only 2 games where you expected them to be tested, they lost without putting up any big fight.

England are the Southampton of international football. So a semi-final place is great achievement for them. Only the muppet media think England are world beaters.

I can understand us wanting the club to move on and all but I think why Arsenal fans are the classiest set of fans is because of our patient and reasonable understanding plus respect for the game and that resonates to our players. So to see a fan disrespect a loyal and hard working servant of this club makes me think again if everyone who posses as a fan is truly a fan. Please let’s learn to respect a player who could have gone to any other top club but decided to pitch his tent with us when we were… Read more »

He’ knows…… he’s just not going to kill the aspirations and enthusiasm of the others

food for thought

GK 2: leno/ cech
RB 2: bell/ leich
CB 5: holding/ chambers/ papa/ mavo (mustafi to be sold?)/ kos to return
LB 2: mon/ kola
DM 2: Guendouzi/ Torreira
CM 4: Ram/ Xhaka/ AMN/ Elneny
Wing 4: Ozil/ Iwobi/ Reis/ Micky
ST 3: Auba/ Laca/ Welbz

looks like a pretty well-stocked team in terms of numbers, so unless we sell to reduce the numbers maybe there might not be space to add.
