Iwobi: World Class Ozil is a big help

Alex Iwobi says that Mesut Ozil it’s a privilege to play alongside Mesut Ozil and that the German is there to give him helpful advice during games and training.

The 22 year old has rediscovered some form recently and spoke of how new head coach Unai Emery has instilled a new-found confidence in him this season.

His plaudits didn’t stop there however, and he was keen to praise Ozil after his man of the match display in the 3-1 win over Leicester on Monday night.

“Of course I get the privilege to play with him every day,” said Iwobi.

“I have been training with him since I was 17 and I have seen what he can do. The quality he has is not just in training but as you can see in the match last night, he is a world-class player and he proved that again last night.

“He gives me advice in a different way. He jokes around but always tells me I can do more.

“Even last night he was saying I can do more, he is always one of those guys, but he is always happy, always telling me and giving me the confidence to express myself so it helps me.

“Mesut will come across as laid back but he is helping everyone in a different way and he helps me a lot.”

The Gunners travelled to Portugal today ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Sporting.

I had my doubts about Iwobi last year but he has been excellent in the last few games. You can see the confidence in the way he drives at defenders. More please!

Rich

I certainly had doubts about Iwobi being good enough, but like Lacazette he’s playing with power and purpose, he’s using his size and athleticism to real effect.
Whilst I don’t doubt Ozil is a world class talent, saying he’s a world class performer is a very hard one to sell, really hope he starts enjoying his football again, he’s looked thoroughly disinterested for too long.

afan

I never had any doubts about iwobi, I always new he would be a good player, but I think wenger held him back a lot, the same with jenkings

Scott P

Love me some Iwozil at the moment

Alphie

Hope that when a rough patch comes we will all be as supportive.

Strange that I miss Wenger and feel he deserved more. I think player betrayal at key points over the last 10 years was his undoing and partly his fault.

If players like iwobi can get some assists and goals it would push that belief to another level.

Mesut O'Neill

He deserved more? He was at the club at least 7 seasons too long & caused the stagnation that now see’s us happy just to finish top 4.

Sean

Absolutely love that picture

George

Nicking a living.

Kostas

Maybe Alex is exaggerating a bit but it’s obvious that the team is radiating health & unity!!! That’s the way to go!!! COYG

Pedant

But Ozil is lazy, selfish and doesn’t achieve much.

So stupid people say.

Mesut O'Neill

God. He has one great game & the previous 10 shit games are forgotten.

Berkamps left toe

He has one bad game and the previous 10 excellent ones are forgotten

kaius

Are you some kind of footballing-illiterate?

Mesut Özil has 4 goals in his last 6 appearances. He’ll keep making you look stupid this season. Don’t forget the adage ‘form is temporary, but class is permanent’.

Mpls

His teammates finally have a game where they finish his plays and suddenly it’s obvious enough for the cut and paste haters to see what he does.

Let’s also keep in mind he’s had what, 2? 3? starts in his actual position?

rosicky4real

@iwobi, I look forward to seeing you being one of the best footballers in our club history. keep it up.

Irrational Gunner

We haven’t had someone have a breakout season since Hector a few years ago. Maybe this is Iwobi’s year to start leaving his mark. He looks to have all the attributes to be a mainstay in the lineup.

Rich

Bellerin+Iwobi kicking on this season looks like a real bonus.
I have a sneaky feeling that Guendouzi for £7million could prove to be our first Sven Mislintat gem, I can’t believe he’s 19, he plays with real personality.

kaius

Very underrated just how much Guendouzi did to change the game when he came on against Leicester. Playing keep-ball, pinging balls out to both flanks, forcing Leicester’s mids to chase him and disjoint their shape left them vulnerable to our attacks.

Naija Gunner

Come on son, you can do it because we believe in you. ???⚽

Nkem

We are hopeful Iwobi would become a football great like his uncle Jay Jay Okocha.
