Bernd Leno was clearly Arsenal’s man of the match in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves, pulling off a succession of good saves to keep Wolves at bay, but the German wasn’t keen to dwell on his own performance, insisting that these were two points dropped rather than one gained.
The Gunners had a somewhat fortuitous equaliser from Henrikh Mkhitaryan to thank for salvaging a draw, but throughout had their goalkeeper to thank for another excellent performance, and afterwards the 26 year old spoke about the performance and result.
“It’s just a statistic,” he said, “because we wanted to win. We have to win these games because these games at home are very important.
“It was a hard game for us, in the first half we didn’t play our best game. In the second half we had many chances, but of course Wolverhampton had many chances as well.
“They were very deep and had fast players for the counter attack, so it was very difficult for us.
“Today the result is a little bit disappointing. We wanted to win this game because we need the points to finish in the top four, so the result is not the best for us today.
“At the end we could have won this game.”
It’s also a game Arsenal could have lost, with two Leno saves in the closing minutes keeping the score level and a cracking shot from substitute Morgan Gibbs-White which cannoned back off the crossbar.
It was a game and performance which will certainly give Unai Emery something to think about as we head into another two week Interlull.
Wolves by far the better team yesterday. Think they’ll be looking back and thinking they should really be winning games like those.
that just goes to show, how realy good we are
I won’t say they were better. We dominated the match but chances were about equal. From the little forays they manage, they got some very critical opportunities. We need to cut out these. We stood off them too much yesterday allowing some shots which Leno had to parry. That needs to be limited. BUT our attacking side of the game was also not sharp. Something wasn’t synced right and we tried to pass through the lines (with less recourse to transitioning quicker and taking on players, pulling them out of position). Much of it is as well due to the… Read more »
It does feel like that Emery’s been working on how to beat teams that press us high up the pitch, which is something which was effective against us in the past. Now he has to come up with a plan to break down teams which sit deep and hit us on the counter
Is it really important that every player talks to the media? Can’t this just be the job of the Manager and perhaps the Captain? After the Liverpool game, almost every Arsenal player had a thing to say. In my opinion i think this kind of take away the focus. We all want to be seen in good light but can that wait till end of the season. Leno, you don’t need to tell us about winning games like this. We know and would rather prefer the team focuses on playing and leave the talk to the media team. Not taking… Read more »
Yeah, why should they have things to say? It’s not like they’re actual people who think things or something…
I get what he’s saying, we’ve seen this before, we play a big game and we got a draw….ok? All week every player of the squad is going on like we’ve turned a corner and then we draw a game we should be winning and its a bit annoying really lol. Reminds me of Theo Walcott. But in the players defence they arent coming out and saying this, they are being asked questions like ”does it feel like you’ve turned a bit of a corner”
I took my 8 year old son to his first match yesterday and I have to say, yes, we weren’t at our best by any means but, my word, our home fans do groan a bit don’t they? My boy said to me: “why do they get so angry just because a player doesn’t pass it straight sometimes. They should get on the pitch and see if they can do better.” Makes you think. The players clearly felt extra pressure from the fans impatience. You could see and feel it and so could he. I know it’s part of the… Read more »
Make up your mind!
Has a go at people moaning and asks for positivity.
Has a moan and slates a player.
Plus, one for @DHOTYA.
there is a problem with how quickly the fans heads go down for sure. But the performance on the pitch was poor.
There is a big difference between being there to support your team vs being there To consume a “fan game” experience. In Both cases, people Will moan, Yet in the latter its because you don’t get what you pay for, which is why I think lower league football has a real chance, win or loose you are there supporting not only when winning.
My boy said to me: “why do they get so angry just because a player doesn’t pass it straight sometimes. They should get on the pitch and see if they can do better.”
Just out of curiosity, how old is your boy really?
brilliant goal keeping………got us a draw we didnt deserve. so can someone please explain…………doherty (a genuine and terrific player) goes down with an injury……….its 85 on the clock…….hes still down at 91…….the assistants board is presented at 90 with the figure 5 on it………were looking at an injury that is in progress on 90 and there were a total of 6 substitutes at that point………to my little pea brain that a minimum of 9 minutes extra. now i know that we got a draw and it could have been worse in the remaining 4 minutes played, but we had the… Read more »
We will never get as many minutes added as Sir Alex Ferguson did because we are not managed by Sir Alex Ferguson!
That is the Fergie time warp you are talking about.
As far as I understand it the official puts up the board to show how many additional minutes need to be played from the 90. The ref isn’t bound by this however and should apply additional minutes that occur during injury time
should have been 7 or 8 mins of added time, but the way we were playing it meant Wolves would have had more time to win the game….
Makes me wonder, when a team scores in the 4th minute of added time at the end of the second half that they have scored in the 94th minute. This would only be the case if there was no added time at the end of the first half…..if there were 2 added minutes in the first half then that goal would have been scored in the 96th minute. Completely irrelevant, I know…..
Wait, another two week interlull?? Aren’t we just back after the last one?
We need defender reinforcement (January Transfer )
Aye, maybe a left back. Holding growing well and with Kos coming back I doubt we’ll get a CB
Too much weight on Laca’s shoulders. He can’t win all games by himself.
What do we have to do to get rid of ozil. Aubameyang needs to pick up the pace and xhaka needs to be punished for his lack of discipline. He has caused 2 goals in the last 2 premier league games. This is unacceptable
How did Xhaka cause Milner to score that goal? Please enlighten me.
im afraid we cant get rid of ozil until his contract runs out, as no one will pay his huge wage ( that’s if anyone will have him )
old red nose (sir)…….lovely to see him in good enough form to endure his legacy on the pitch yesterday
he left them in shite
We need another wide option at Rwing. 1) Iwobi to me is better on Lwing where he can cut in to his right foot. Yesterday at Lwing, he was tucked in too much which was in a way to allow Bellerin to come forward but he did not pick his off ball runs that well too. 2) We don’t have anyone other than Iwobi who is able to engage and take on players, pull the opponents out of position. Mhkitaryan maybe but to me, he’s lost pace and is better as an AM …where we also have Ozil and Ramsey.… Read more »
