Unai Emery has confirmed that Danny Welbeck suffered a broken ankle on Thursday against Sporting, and doesn’t know if the striker will play again this season.
The England international was stretchered off in the 30th minute of the 0-0 draw after catching his ankle in the turf as he challenged for the ball.
It was later described as a ‘significant’ injury by the club and in his post-game press conference following the Gunners 1-1 draw with Wolves, the Spaniard revealed the full extent of the injury.
“Yes,” he replied when asked if it was a broken ankle. “He had the operation on Friday.
“Danny’s injury is big. We spoke with him yesterday and today. We support him.
“I think he is going to come with us in not a long time. [Google Translate Emery bot: “I don’t think he’ll be with us for a long time.”]
So, now we just have to hope there were no complications following the surgery and wish him all the best for his recovery so maybe he can get back before the end of this season.
All the best to him. We really missed his presence today. Maybe think about that contract nonetheless if can’t find a replacement in time!
I can’t help but think there is a bit of a psychological hangover amongst the squad because of this injury to Danny.
A full-on contributor who will be missed.
I hope the surgery and recovery goes well.
Not only will he be missed, but he was indeed missed today. This is exactly the kind of game where bringing on Danny’s energy and physicality can really help to unlock organised, but tiring defences.
Not to mention he’s one of a few players who can head the ball
After today, more of the lower table teams may park the bus and try to counter us. Why not if we don’t have any heading strength (besides the smash and grab tactic.)
2nd half, Auba played as no. 9 while Lacazette moved to the right wing. Lacazette became an out-ball for us hitting it long. I think we’ll find a way to cope
When Eduardo had his leg broken in 2008, Arsenal went from being top of the league to drawing the next 17 games or so when, really, we should have won it that year. This time, just win the next one, please…
Funny enough, Eduardo was actually at the game today
Get well soon Welbz ??
Let’s not sentiment get in the way here.
Anyone think thinks Daniel would have changed the game today, doesn’t know football.
Agreed. Danny is a great squad player and a great guy. But for a team trying to regain 4th or higher we shouldn’tbe looking to Welbeck to save our bacon.
Can we make sure he doesn’t use the same surgeons that worked on Cazorla’s achilles.
Now thats ry funny bro
