Lucas Torreira has dedicated his winning goal against Huddersfield to the Arsenal fans, thanking them for ‘showing up’ every week.
We’ll sidestep the fact a fair few didn’t do that last year when things got tough *casts suspicious eye at certain members of the audience* and instead focus on how brilliant our Uruguayan is.
On a tough afternoon at the Emirates, the 22-year-old once again delivered a man-of-the-match performance in midfield and netted a second goal of the week to secure three vital points.
Did we mention the goal was a deliciously acrobatic overhead kick following fine work by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang? Yes, it was from only five yards out, but it still looks great in the pictures.
Anyway, here’s what Lucas had to say about the way his goal came about.
“When the ball went to the back post, I saw Auba control the ball and got myself into the box because I thought he might put it straight back in,” he told Arsenal.com.
“The goalie made it hard for him so Auba hung it up and I was there waiting. It was just the goalscorer’s instinct that all players have – thankfully it came off and the goal meant we won the game.
Just when you thought you couldn't love @LTorreira34 anymore, he pops up with an overhead kick winner. #only5ft5 #coyg pic.twitter.com/1ItSOoO8fO

“I am really happy, really happy. I work really hard throughout the week to make these moments happen at the weekend, because that’s the most important thing.
“These goals help the team to keep winning, keep improving and keep building confidence. We have a fantastic team and a great group and we enjoy playing together.
“The goal is for the fans too – they show up every week and follow us to all the different stadiums. They’re always there so this goal is for them first and foremost.”
Well thank you Mr Torreira.
What a fucking hero.
No doubt he’s going to be a huge player for us moving forward.
Mr. Terror-ra.
“The goal is for the fans too – they show up every week and follow us to all the different stadiums. They’re always there so this goal is for them first and foremost.”
On his way to becoming a legend.
Will a 15 year extension be too much? Just asking…
Triple his wages whilst we’re at it too. He’s just got it. Today wasn’t even one his best games but he oozes quality and grit. My favourite signing since Arshavin.
My favourite signing since Cazorla.
Buzzing for all our summer signings. Can’t wait once Sven & Raul hit the market again.
He’s our Pitbull.
Mr worldwide
Pitbull is more like it. I love the frightening tenacity of that breed.
Cimarrón Uruguayo.
Err Blogs…it was a bicycle kick…but still a thing of beauty…
Or a Chilena, as Torreira would call it in Spanish.
Er…he was supposed to be our DM? He seems to our Carzola replacement and he may even become our new Viera! He is only 22!
Future captain this guy.
I absolutely love Torreira. I had a hunch he’d be really really good for us but to be this level of sensational until now has been no short of a surprise. A very pleasant one. By far the best summer signing in Europe. Can’t wait to see him again in the red of Arsenal.
Captain material in the future, such a well spoken young man with a fantastic attitude! It’s great that he feels the love and bond with fans already.
Get Ndombele to partner Torriera in the midfield….he deserves that as a gift for his hard work!!!!!!!!!
This guy is not targeting a starting 11 spot, he wants to make a difference in every way he can, win games for us and clearly be a complete player, and we will sing your name all along my friend 🙂
We need his work rate and mentality to be the baseline for every player. He is hungry for succes and the others need to up their game. We had 2 shots on target today, both from Torreria!!!
We need to be honest and do better. Against huddersfield 2 shots on target is below average. We still won, which is great…
We have a special player on our hands.
When you thought you couldn’t love Torreira more… He comes out with a tribute to the fans. What a guy.
Smoke me a kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.
Na, I’m still dreaming of his goal against Spuds. “And yes, Torreira will probably get a yellow card from Mike Dein for taking his shirt off, but do we care, Russ???”
“Nooooo!!!!”
Haha. Fuck I’m still drunk from , shit, what day did we lose again????
Love from Lock-up 🙂
So he did a bicycle kick rather than head it just for us. Legend.
Real taste for goals at the moment.
Great strike from distance first half.
Then this spectacular finish.
I don’t think we have a fixed DM.
Guendouzi, Torreira and Granit take turns to hold centrally, predominantly being Granit bc of his distribution.
BUT Guendouzi’s cross ball to AUba ended in the goal and Torreira had some good long distance passes too.
Its one of the best midfields in the PL for all to see but your regular punditry.
Heartbreaker ??
“It was just the goalscorer’s instinct that all players have”
Oh I could name a few who don’t and they’re not even DMs
Too true.. I noticed MickyTerian was barely in the box when the cross came in.

When you score your first goal for Arsenal against the noisy Spuds, then you know your status as a legend has been stamped.
Keep it coming Torry! You’re already what Dier will never be for the spuds.
A legend in the making
What a huge and timely relief that goal was.phew! Thank you so much Torreira not just for this special goal, but for your overall contribution and never say die spirit so far in a gunner’s jersey. You are highly appreciated.
I love this guy so much.
By far and away my favourite South American ever to pull on an Arsenal Jersey….
