Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema has broken Netherlands’ all-time goalscoring record after netting twice for OranjeLeeuwinnen in their 3-1 World Cup Group E win over Cameroon on Saturday. Miedema equalled the record with a first half diving header from Shanice van de Sanden’s cross.

Cameroon equalised before recently departed Gunners midfielder Dominique Bloodworth put the Dutch back into the lead. In the second half, Miedema scored again to break the record. Viv doesn’t turn 23 until next month. She has scored 60 goals in 77 appearances for her country. She has taken the record from Manon Melis who scored 59 goals for the Netherlands in 136 caps.

Elsewhere, Beth Mead notched up another assist for England, setting up Jodie Taylor’s second half winner against Argentina. England assured progression to the knockout rounds with the victory. Leah Williamson was an unused substitute in that game.

Assuming ages work in the same way as they do for our men’s team, I am led to believe she will be 23 next month, until which time she will remain at 22 years old.
I’ll be watching the women’s team more often than the men’s team from now on. Our ladies are elite.
Not sure which is more amazing 60 goals in 77 appearances or the fact that she has 77 appearances before her 23rd birthday! Amazing.
Quite possibly the best striker in the game at the moment. I hope she stays with us for the next 10 years, retiring with us as a club legend and smashing the goalscoring records in the process.

She has scored 60 goals in little more than half the matches it took the previous record holder to get their 59 … that is some feat !
It appears Lieke Martens is the star of the team, however, Vivianne is going to be a superstar in that Dutch team at this rate. And I like what I’ve seen of Roord while van de Donk hasn’t really exploded yet. The Dutch certainly have my support for the Cup.
