New Arsenal Women goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger says that she is a modern, ball playing goalkeeper and that she is no shrinking violet. Speaking exclusively to Arseblog News on this month’s Arsenal Women Arsecast, Manuela said “I am a modern goalkeeper, I like to play with both feet.
“I am stronger on my right, but my left isn’t bad too- at least I hope! I want to play with the team. I am not like the old-style goalkeepers who stand on the line and wait, no. I want to have the ball and play too. I want to help the team, I want to be active. That’s me on the field.”
The Austrian international has also warned Gunners fans to get used to the sound of her voice at Boreham Wood next season. “I also want to be loud!” she laughed. “I have to get better with the language to learn the right words to help the team and to coach the team on the pitch.
“But when I do I will be very loud! I want to coach the team and show them that I am there and that I can help them and the defence. I am not quiet (laughs). Sometimes you have to stop me a little, because it is different in the German league.”
Zinsberger also admits that she might have to make some adjustments in terms of the risks she takes, due to the propensity for players in the WSL to let fly from long distance. “I was talking with Leanne (Hall, the goalkeeper coach) and she said sometimes you have to be closer to your line.
“In the English league players shoot from 30 metres, that never happens in the German league, maybe once or twice a season. Here it happens in every game. So maybe I need to be 5 metres further back!”
Manuela was talking on this month’s Arsenal Women Arsecast, which also features interviews with Bayern Munich Frauen fan and photographer Sven Beyrich and Gunners winger Katie McCabe. The podcast, featuring the full interview with Manu, can be downloaded here. We will also have a full match preview for the Bayern game on the site on Friday and exclusive player reaction on the site on Sunday evening.

Anyone able to shed light on how the finances of the women’s team is managed?
they basically get a £2.1m subsidy from the men’s team every year and they spend that plus a bit more, which the club absorbs.
Presumably they generate their own income as well from ticket sales, prize money presumably sponsors etc too?
Yes, absolutely. Usually they generate just under the £2m they get from the club- they’re one of the best players payers in the world. By my reckoning, though it’s hard to be exact- they pay better than Chelsea and City. But this year they have their own sponsorship deal with MasterCard. They should be able to do more deals like this now.
Anyone else curios as to why we’ve bought a keeper that needs to wear glasses?
Ha! Mentioned that when we signed her but didn’t get anyone to bite! Presumably she wears contacts when playing but I did make the comparison with Ellen White often being on her hands and knees looking for her lenses while she wasn’t deliberately throwing herself to the ground! She doesn’t seem to do that now so perhaps contact lenses for sporting types have improved over the years. I do like Manuela’s attitude regarding directing the outfield though. It may help prevent some of those mucking fuddles that the backline and goalie used to get into when players only raised their… Read more »
