Chambers: We need competition for places at Arsenal

Calum Chambers says that while David Luiz is a great player, he’s relishing the challenge of keeping his place in the Arsenal team.

The 24 year old put in an impressive performance on the opening day, helping the Gunners to a 1-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Whether he holds onto to the starting berth remains to be seen, but the England man insists competition for places at Arsenal is necessary to ensure everyone plays to their top level.

Speaking about Luiz to the Evening Standard, Chambers said, “He seems like a great guy. He is a great player, too.

“Competition will bring the best out of people. At a club like Arsenal, that is how it should be.

The centre-half signed a new Arsenal contract last summer, and insists that a return to North London was in his mind after a season on loan at Fulham.

“It was always my aim to come back,” he said.

“I went into the loan spell and was fully focused on giving everything for that club in every game and training session.

“I didn’t think about the future, but before I went the plan was to go, gain experience, and come back.

With Shkodran Mustafi seemingly now surplus to requirements, there is the opportunity for Chambers to secure a place in the squad. Let’s hope he makes the most of it.

Hope to see the twins in some games this season. Best friends off the pitch so maybe, just maybe they can produce something good on the pitch too : )

Richie

Twins?

AlexanderN

Chambers and Holding…

Dave

Matteo and David more like

Cultured determination

They probably just go to the same barber in london. Just dont go to auba’s barber. The guy scores goals, but that hair… it’s like he found gervinho’s barber

goonero

Why is this being downvoted? Those two are practically married

Jon Snow

Now I am confused
Are they married or are they twins or are they twins who are married? #GOT

goonero

I think the correct term is “bromosexual”

goonero

Homiesexual is also acceptable

North London is Redder

Maybe because they don’t look in the slightest bit like one another. Brothers, maybe? Twins, nah.

MeSoHornsey

They don’t even look like brothers but I upvoted it anyway at the absurdity of the comment. It literally made me laugh out loud.

Lord Bendnter

I upvote your upvote for the absurdity of the comment that made you laugh out loud

Bob

I upvoted your upvoted for his…. Ahh whatever.

Dave M

Loud out laugh you made that comment the of absurdity the for upvote your upvote I

Dave M

Well said Chambo! Surely get this kid in the Captaincy quintet and expand it to a Sextet.

Mintoes

This five captains thing is a load of bollocks. There should be one and one only fkn captain and it should be a CB with vocal and physical presence, leadership. Give it to sokratis and be done with it.

Lack of Perspective

Ran araaand a bit

Dave M

Nah mate, I think 6 might not even be enough.

Bring back David Hillier

11 captains as a minimum

Brian

I’m a captain, and so’s my wife

Dave M

Night Brian Captain…

Dave M

Only 11? what of there is a sub?

SharpasFc

We’ve all seen how well having one captain has worked for Arsenal recently. I have no problems with the 5 captains although initially I did think something had been lost in translation when Emery was interviewed about it and yet not for the first time it seems I was completely wrong.

GraeB

At least if we have 5 captains for the season we might hang onto one of them for next?

Dave M

Or lose 5?

Cory Noe

I’ve always rated Chambers as a player. He has performed quite well in both of his loan stints, and when he didn’t play particularly well for us it was when he was utilized as a RB. I think keeping him is down to the fact that he’s English so he helps with the homegrown quota, but he’s still relatively young and an excellent squad player. Do we need to depend on him week-in, week-out to start? Ideally, no but he is an obvious upgrade in defense to Mustafi, and I’d argue the same is true in midfield over Elneny. He… Read more »

goonero

I honestly think his “bad spell” became more of a meme than a reflection of reality. He had a game where he got badly exposed at RB, and a few less than impressive games during a tough run for the team. Name an Arsenal youngster you can’t litterally say the exact same about. He went on two loan spells to premier league sides, and came out from both with ringing endorsements of his attitude and his performances. Now how many Arsenal youngsters can you say the same about? I think he’s a talented but also very grounded young CB with… Read more »

GraeB

He was hung out to dry in that game at Swansea and I blame Wenger for that.

Bob

Should have used the tumble drier.

Niran

Oh Montero !… Chambers has really grown in confidence since then

Richie

I’m gonna be selfish and say I wanna see the new signings start tomorrow; Luiz, Cabelos and Pepe. By the way the new layout of the news page on mobile format is too clunky and the stories are all over the place. It was much better when articles were listed in chronological order.

Chiza

Exactly man.. They should return to the normal style.. This style makes me miss out on articles

Bob

How do you know?

Segun Goonereris

We might just see Luiz (in a 3 at the back) and Ceballos; but I feel Pepe needs more minutes and another week to be able to start and impress.

Pookins

Much much better when listed in chronological order!

Arsenio

Yeah I’ve seen the layout before, then it reverted, and now it’s back again…

Teryima Adi

I concur, Sir. The old format was better.

Dustwolf83

Occasionally the mobile site is loading like the website version (which has the scrolling option across the top), instead of the ‘old’/normal mobile site which has the articles in chronological order as you scroll down the page.
I’ve had the desktop version a couple of times on mobile recently, but I’ve currently got the normal mobile one.

HelderHughes

Alex Guinness, A New Hope, 1977

Arsenio

It’s back to loading the proper mobile one now again. Life is good again! Something for the developers to check perhaps?

Richie

Yep I can confirm back to normal for me too. Arseblog maybe your dog was sleeping on a cable?! Nonetheless, cheers mate for the daily news updates.

Drew

Think Chambers had a very composed and accomplished performance against Newcastle. Didn’t try any stupid shit and generally made the right decision every time. Hope he keeps his place in the team, much rather him than Mustafi anywhere near the first 11.

Goonereality

I agree. He played well.

The bottom line with Mustafi is that we’re no worse off (and quite a bit better off – fewer unforced errors etc. ) without him. Now, if only we could offload him and save his large salary… .

Oregoon

Ah, the metaphor we have been looking for. Mustafi as surplus.

Santori

I would prefer minimum rotation at Cback.

Ourchildrensworld

Agreed.

Although I’m happy for it in the short term if it keeps players on their toes and helps us determine who the best pairing is.

Glitsy

Hope PAuLa plays tomorrow. She is perhaps the finest attack in the league at the moment. Who is Paula? P(epe)AU(ba)LA(ca).

Dear Paula ooh, sweet Paula ooh
The three that play as one
The best strike force bar none
Dear Paula ooh, sweet Paula ooh

Richie

Nah mate it’s Emery planning a Poland invasion attack – (P)epe, (O)zil, (L)acazette, (A)ubangeyang, (N)elson, (D)ani Cabelos.

Santori

I think it was always dependent on whether Chambers had the sentiment to fight for a spot. His games in pre-season was disciplined but showed some issues positionally (Dembele goal against Lyon and Barca Suarez goal, his spacing with other Cback too far) Looked better against Newcastle but still some issues to work out albeit this time it was Sokratis. Down the centre there were two instances : 1) Sokratis went down too quickly when Joelinton was straight in on goal first half. 2) Last minutes of the game a straight ball floated in we lost the first aerial challenge… Read more »

Goonereality

Nobody is saying that the defence without Mustafi doesn’t or won’t make mistakes – that would be daft (apart from being impossible). The on-going problem with Mustafi is that he’s simply an accident waiting to happen – and in many games we didn’t wait long for it to happen.

You’re obviously a fan of his, but Emery (apart from many Gooners) clearly doesn’t agree with you because he’s not playing him now and has said, publicly, he can leave. Now, it’s proving very difficult to get anyone to buy Mustafi but that’s not exactly an endorsement either, is it?

George

Well said. You don’t live by the sea by any chance? I do and I’ve found shouting at it to be more productive than trying to reason with the above.

As for Chambers, here’s hoping – it would be great if he went from strength to strength.

Teryima Adi

It’s like you’re Mustafi’s elder brother, Santori.

Goonereality

This could be his big opportunity, if he can grab it. Emery has clearly done the right thing by (finally) sidelining the awful Mustafi. This means not only are we less error prone (who wouldn’t be?) but it enables Emery to give chances to the likes of Chambers. If we’re being honest, Chambers wasn’t great when he was with us. Possibly it was the size of his fee and the publicity of the move when he was a very young player, possibly he was thrown in at the deep end too long and too quickly by Wenger. Anyway, he played… Read more »

GraeB

Do we know if Fulham tried to buy him or not? Did he/we reject the idea?

Goonereality

It was reported that he would be returning at the end of the loan period as no offer had been made so that’s how I read it. Had an offer been made and rejected, I’m sure we would know.

Mesut O’Neill

You realize they went down & wouldn’t have been able to afford his fee & wages?

They signed Seri for £25m then had to loan him because they couldn’t afford his wages.

Santori

I’m a big believer in improvement especially at this age 23/24yrs.

I think Holding and Chambers can step up considerably.

SSBob is there for insurance particularly as we are playing plenty of debutante and younger players this season.

BOTH Chambers and Holding are not prone to panic. They may work well together Rob with his height playing the stopper and Chambers sweeping.

I feel Unai will lean towards a back 4 with back 3 on occasion only.

The grand rambler commented on one of the last three ladies articles.

I’d check which one, but I am concerned as it’s only been a day and I can’t remember which.

Runzac

Who’s this mustafi?

Francesc

Ozil is fucking useless.. wonder how much he paid for today’s article in the telegraph..

Bob

It’s about £1 I think, which is too much for that rag.

Mintoes

I see he’s got the sniffles again, code for I’m DC bound by the end of the month…fingers crossed…

Arsenala Vista Baby

Competition for place should bring the best out of Mustafi too

SLC Gooner

Defending is one of those things that looks much better if you have a few players that can get significant time together. If Chambers, Holding, Sokratis and Luiz can all stays healthy over the next two years, I think we should be in pretty good shape. Chambers in my mind is a great option to have, as he’s also pretty good as a more defensively minded CDM, especially if we need an extra body to protect a lead against a strong attacking team.

Mad skills

I didn’t think about the future, but before I went the plan was to go, gain experience, and come back.“

Calum Chambers has a time machine!

His friend is a big Liverpool fan and wanted to go back and see them winning the league but it doesn’t go that far unfortunately
