Tim Stillman talks about what made the match entertaining, lessons learned from the FA Cup Final, and how things are now poised for the run-in with Arsenal having played all their top four rivals.
Looking closely, for once I do have some sympathy for the ref. Leah was side on to the ref so her body obscured her right arm. Ref did look to the side for some help, but none came……fortunately!
I think we underestimate the psychology of refs in moments like that and we look at decisions too coldly. I think, ultimately, she knew that if she gives Chelsea a penalty it essentially gives them the title, it definitely gives them this game that late on and I don’t think she wanted to do that. I think it would have taken a really egregious trip or foul for her to give a call that massive and, personally, I am happy with that (irrespective of this one going in our favour!) These are massive decisions and I do think the bar… Read more »
Not sure about the ref influencing the outcome of the title surely that is not part of their job description? My take on it was Leah’s initial positioning for whatever reason had her arm above her head. She then lowered her arm and made to put it behind her back which would have been the more natural place for her arm to be in defending the cross but unfortunately the ball hit her arm during that movement. I think the problem is with the law of the game which says that if the ball hits the arm it is an… Read more »
I was interested that Emma Hayes said the ref asked Leah if it was a handball – do refs do this? would any player have said ” yeah mate, totally handball, please award the opposition a penalty in the final moments of this game”
did the ref actually ask? or is emma just stirring? (i am new to WSL, so apologies if this is a naive question – i have nothing against Emma, but am aware of rivaliries obv!)

It is good for the women’s game that it’s so close at the top of the WSL. We’ve recently drawn against Chelsea, City and United, and today’s Manchester derby was pretty tight (Caroline Weir’s chip was a deserved winner). Now all we want is for Spurs to take points off Chelsea in their two games…

An important point.
They were all crying in Sky this morning because Chelsea weren’t awarded a penalty.
Tough!! 🤣
Well, if we’re honest that was an egregious handball by Williamson and a very bad miss by the ref. Best to pretend it didn’t happen!
