Arsenal rounded off their pre-season preparations with a comfortable 6-0 win over Sevilla built on a nine-minute blitz in the first half.
Bukayo Saka gave the Gunners the lead from the penalty spot on 10 minutes after being shoved in the back by Karim Rekik, brother of young Gunner Omar.

Gabriel Jesus then got in on the act with a quick fire brace, first pouncing on a spill from keeper Bono following a Xhaka cutback and then sliding home a Martinelli cross.

Before the midway point of the first half, things went from bad to worse for Sevilla’s keeper who made a hash of a pass out from the back and then suffered the ignominy of Saka putting the ball through his legs first time.

Martinelli, Partey and Odegaard all had chances to further extend the lead before the break.
Understandably, the Gunners took their foot off the gas in the second half allowing a much-improved Sevilla to create chances of their own. Fernando and Lamela both came close with headers from corners.
At the other end, Xhaka, picked out with a looping pass from Partey, volleyed just over and Martinelli continued to be a menace.
Arsenal were well on top by the time we added a fifth, Jesus rounding off his hat-trick by clipping home from close range after a half-cleared corner fell to him. He later collected the man of the match award from Jose Antonio Reyes’ father, a nice touch from the club on a day when his son was feted for his achievements with both clubs.

Arteta sent on four subs to close things out and one of them, Eddie Nketiah, rounded off the scoring in the closing moments. Our new number 14 tapped into an empty net having been set up by Martinelli who had sprung the offside trap thanks to a fine pass by Xhaka.

Hours after being confirmed Arsenal’s new captain Martin Odegaard was sent to collect his first piece of silverware.
It’s the first time the club have lifted the Emirates Cup since 2017 and the perfect fillip ahead of Friday’s Premier League opener with Crystal Palace.
__
Starting XI: Ramsdale, White, Gabriel, Saliba, Zinchenko (78), Partey (78), Xhaka (89), Odegaard, Saka (78), Jesus (78), Martinelli (89)
Subs: Turner, Runarsson, Cedric (78), Bellerin, Mari, Holding, Elneny (78), Maitland-Niles, Lokonga (89), Marquinhos, Pepe (78), Nelson (89), Nketiah (78)
Absent: Leno, Tierney, Tomiyasu, Torreira, Vieira, Smith Rowe, Balogun
Looking really good with more of goals in the team now.
Saliba inspires confidence at the back and he just seems to have more time than other players, He has great technique and positional awareness.
It also gives us a solution to our right back problem with White as back up instead of Cedric. Finally, it feels like our fullback problems have been solved.
Let’s hope he Saliba has the same ceiling as Van Dijk.
He certainly has all the basic ingredients. Very early though.
Winterburn said by Jesus is like the new Ian Wright, I think people have forgotten how good he was as Thierry Henry gets in the way of those memories. Would be considered world class today. Let’s hope Nige is right!
I was thinking more Adams than a Liverpool player.
I feel dirty now. Sorry Karl.
I got your point, but struggle to admire any LFC player:-)
Now he could defend a bit, couldn’t he?
I have a feeling we’re going to get our pants pulled down by Big Willie, he looks like he’s going to tear up trees this year but he’ll only have a year left on the contract at the end of the season.
If we get Champions League he’ll have little reason to want to leave.
Ian Wright was unbelievable. He had a season less than Henry and only about 40 fewer goals, so not a lot between them. Also Thierry played in far superior sides.
A very real one of the reasons I’m a gooner. Wasn’t brought up ina football family but a neighbour took me to Highbury a few times as a kid and ian Wright Wright Wright
Ian Wright’s main playmakers were seaman and dixon!
He would have scored more if he had henry’s teammates, methinks.
A bit disrespectful to guys like Merson, Limpar and Rocky
Not really. We love them, but Vieira, Bergkamp and Pires has a nice ring!
I never forgot how good Wrighty was. He was the reason I started supporting Arsenal. He was a brilliant footballer, not only a fox in the box. He had great technique. He also had a nice amount of needle and was funny as all hell too.
Loved the dirty lunge he tried on scum utds shmeikel (spelling)
I remember Ian Wright by how much he made me a happier person.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twgVAkT2LV0
If you’ve not watched this Wrighty session with Dennis, you MUST… great peek behind the scenes with two legends.
I hope we add a winger and a striking option before the end of the window. We have a good thing but we shouldn’t heavily rely on it.
The team needs more goals, and it needs more depth to last a whole season. You can’t rely on Saka and run him into the ground this season, that has to be a priority surely? I don’t understand the downvotes
Arsenal: win 6-0
Scwibble: “The team needs more goals…”
🧐
Look at our goal difference last season, only different thing now is we Gabriel jesus, he can’t play every single game can he?
His backup also scored today, for those taking notes at home. Same backup who finished last season in great form and is still quite young, so is likely to continue improving. Improvement was required and significant improvements have been made.
So you’re telling me that going into the season with two strikers is sufficient? Last campaign started with Nketiah, Auba, Laca and Balogun, we have Europa League now as well with world cup in midway through season.
Doesn’t seem as though people have put enough thought into it imo.
I actually agree I think we need real quality depth for Saka and an upgrade on granit.
However, don’t look past the organic improvement of odegaard, saka and martinelli for more goals.
And that after Arsenal put 4 past the Chavs
You’re too emotional. Again !
You are lost, still sour because I didn’t agree with your opinion that Tavares was finished.
😀 temper temper…so overly emotional that you are (still) accusing me of something I never said.
Scwibble respect for sticking to your guns – you probably have a point about striking depth, but there is a certain irony to posting those fears here of all articles. If you really want to know why you got downvotes it’s because sometimes people like enjoying the good moments without having to think about the inconvenient facts. Sometimes the wisest thing to do is juts enjoy those moments – it’s what it’s all about, really, and you can’t guarantee when the next one will come along. You’re not necessarily wrong, but it might take until the rose tint has faded… Read more »
I get you, but for me, sometimes when you have a good thing you only want to preserve that. And we’ve been burned only too recently because we didn’t have necessary contingencies in place. It’s more about player welfare if anything, I’d hate to see Saka get injured just because Pepe can’t be trusted to fill in.
It doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the win, far from it.
Zadok The Wise.
Pepe is here, deserves a chance.
Glory days are back
Slow down fella, let’s quietly be optimistic
Scintillating
saliba is a fucking boss. LANS
Great result, what a change from last year’s!
Jesus, Saka, Saliba looking so good and the rest aren’t bad too…
6 versus Seville, 4 versus Chelsea!
Hope is high, let’s hope we keep it going into the full season.
Good day for all gunners!
How good is Saliba??? We have really missed a striker with the profile of Jesus. In fact we’re a perfect match for each other. Bring on the new season. COYG!!!
A contender for the Glolden boot surely! Haaland will take time to settle in England. Liverpool fans are already thinking Nunez will be a flop. Chelsea dont even have a recognized striker. Gabriel Jesus on the ther hand is approaching his prime year and already knows the premiere league. His link up play is so so good! So good!
He’s hit the ground running, massive season ahead for him 🙏😊
I think Haaland will struggle. He’s an amazing finisher, but hardly ever see him beat a man. The great strikers in the prem all knew how to go past a man. What they have is someone with great positional awareness, and great finishing, but that’s all.
No way of knowing whether he’ll take time to settle, but great positional awareness + great finishing probably = lots of fuckin goals in that team.
Gabi could end up being the steal of the summer if he takes this form into the season. Haaland is a beast but has had a lot of niggly injuries, especially last season, so early in his career
Which Gabi?? (We’ll get that a lot this season)
Just watching the charity shield and he looks off the pace so far but he’s too good a player not to figure it out
Didn’t know liverdross fans think Nunez is pants? Hope you are right though 👍
Liverpool fans, for the most part, are thick.
Always were, always will be.
One or two of them are ok, but a lot of them, especially the genuine locals, are dickheads.
Harry Enfield fucking nailed them with his Scousers characters.
Everyone looks sharp and strong and the new players have slotted straight in. Hopefully we’ll have a good season. Roll on Friday! COYG
There’s something brewing here, everyone seems to be playing with a different swag, past two games i watched Xhaka pull off nutmegs, some overhead ping pong, its amazing. The attack, the flair, the press, I am proud of this team, this season we will enjoy this team. What a quick striker can add to this bunch is amazing to think we still have a lot ib our artillery, Viera. Martinelli is a beast, 88′ boy still sprinting like its the fiest 5mins. I love it I love it I live it. Just bring Palace now, COYG!!!
That man is called Granit for two reasons: the softness of his feet and the strength of his will – so watching him go for nutmegs is like watching a man bullishly rolling a dice he knows is loaded against him, and when it comes up six I never know if it’s through luck or because he’s so obstinately single-minded fate just backs off and says “alright you can have this one”.
Good one. Haha.
Everytime i get mad at Xhaxa i will think of this post and feel better.
Sorry for Patrick and all, but I’m ready for these boys to mercilessly smash Palace.
We owe PV one for facilitating Spuddies getting in the CL ahead of us..
Make no mistake, we did that all by ourselves.
I’m absolutely loving the look of this side and what Arteta is doing. Haven’t been buzzing like this for a new season in a long time. COYG
Very exciting stuff. If Martinelli can add goals to his game he will be an absolute monster if a player.
Only concern is still no sign of Tomi, KT or ESR. The only 3 players in the squad you could argue might be ‘first 11’ players, as opposed to purely being back ups.
They are back in training now, no need to rush them back, we can play a back four of White, Saliba, Gabriel and Zinchenko!
Totally agree Bill.
They’re recovering from long term injuries.
Is Viera a joke to you?
Bloody hell, you must be the captain of the ‘easily offended by innocuous remarks’ crew !
😂😂
It was funny!
And Balogun to you?
How’s the Marquinhos lad been? I haven’t managed to catch any of the preseason games.
He didn’t play today but he looks technically sound if a little conservative, but I’m confident there’s more to him than he’s shown so far. Also in terms of squad dynamics he always has the smile of a man who doesn’t know exactly what’s going on but is enjoying it regardless, which is endearing.
Saliba has to start. What a player!
He has incredible potential judging by what he did today. So relaxed, confident, in fact everything we want in a modern centre half. An extension is a must because a player that good at that age is going to be attracting attention.
How amazing was that 10 minute spell with the four goals ? It all came from the high press, Sevilla didn’t know what to do, they looked liked the survivors of an artillery barrage come the 19th minute. As pointed out in the commentary, this is a side that only conceded 30 goals in La Liga last season, they are no mugs defensively. It was incredible to watch. I won’t get carried away, it is of course only pre-season, however, you can’t help but be excited about the way the team is going about it’s business during it. The front… Read more »
That was good sh*t
Business begins on Friday. More of the same, please.
Unlike last season, basically what is our first team at the moment is ready and raring to go. I feel we are going to make a statement this season. COYG!
Another day, another goal or 3 from Jesus. Could get used to this 😉
He scores when he wants….
Sounds like Martinelli had a hell of a game
His playmaking this preseason has been excellent he’s had like 5/6 assists.
With the caveat that it’s “only pre-season” we looked really, really good and Arteta is implementing a style of football that isn’t aimed at getting top 4 but actually challenging the top 2 in the coming seasons. The only question now is having the squad depth to reach those heights, and that’s probably a season or 2 away.
On another note watching Zinchenko play with such composure and technique you can see what Tavares was sent on loan and baring a miracle unlikely to play under Arteta again.
I do think that tabares wasn’t helped by the fact tomi was also out and we were playing him and cedric so his defensive frailties weren’t getting covered over so much. Hoping he has a good season out on loan.
I just don’t think Tavares is an Arteta type player, I don’t think he’s good enough on the ball.
I don’t see him being able to do what Zinchenko and White did today and step into midfield, pinging cross field balls to the foot of the opposite wing.
We’re starting to play a highly technical, tactical style and I just don’t ever think he’ll be at that level
“I just don’t think Tavares is an Arteta type player…” YET
“I don’t see him being able to do what Zinchenko and White did today…” YET
What’s missing from Tavares’ game? Composure? Can be taught and Marseille will be a great place to learn. Technique? Same. He already has bags of strength and pace. I’ll bet Tavares will be a solid player for years to come.
I don’t think you can teach either composure or technique otherwise you just recruit guys off the British athletics team
I am genuinely curious why you think composure (and especially technique) can’t be taught? I learned a phenomenal amount of both in my 20s and would like to think folks can learn all that they want to.
It seems to me that height, size and pace are more along the lines of what can’t be taught, and Tavares is set there
Why don’t we just sign up Usain Bolt then, he’s taller and quicker?
Football isn’t primarily about physicality, it’s about skill and intelligence, that’s why the greatest player ever is 5’7” Lionel Messi and not 6’4” Adebayor.
A lot of people on here are irrationally over invested in Tavares. If Tavares could play like Zinchenko he would be in the team doing it not out on loan, alas he can’t which is why he isn’t.
John, it’s not about being over-invested in anyone (and I don’t beleive you should be presuming the intentions or motives of people you nothing little about!). It’s about a non player-specific comment you made about the nature of technique and composure – which, quite frankly, was utter bollocks. We are all absolutely taught technique – in just about every aspect of our daily lives – from holding your first spoon to tying your laces to driving a car to – YES – how to kick a football! Likewise, composure is all about remaining calm, about knowing what one’s options are… Read more »
Technique is by definition all about training and teaching.
Composure is a direct result of experience, the more times you’ve faced pressure, the better equipped you are to deal with it.
So YES – both those things can most certainly be learned.
The only remaining question is whether Nuno is the type of character who can/will learn… and how fast?
I think it’s important in highly coached, technical teams to have a couple of players who are allowed to diverge from the structure a bit and be more free and direct. It makes the team a lot more difficult to defend against. Think Pep’s Barcelona with Alves and Messi vs. the boring (but still successful) Spain NT of the same era.
Whether Tavares has the talent to justify taking up one of those roles is up for debate. But there’s no rush to make a definitive judgement yet, get him a good loan and reassess next summer
It’s all so exciting. The perpetually negative commenters have been pleasantly and notably absent all summer. Hopefully they’ve decided to just remain on as readers only, or even better, they’ll decide to get on the boat!!
Nah – they’ve retreated back to their Spuds sites… nothing to see here anymore.
No team likes a 6-0 gubbing even if its a friendly and I know its pre season but with the new signings and (Saliba) i haven’t felt this confident before a new season we will have our old Arsenal back..
I have a really nice feeling about this season, not had it for a good few years! Jesus to score the winner against Man City just for the sight of Peps crestfallen face 🤣
Another very impressive performance from the team as a team, no need to single any name out in my view, Friday will test our defending (particularly in the air) and ability to counter a fair bit more than any pre season game we have played but we look ready to me.
Agree that Friday is different kind of test altogether but you’ve got to feel confident with a back line of Zinchenko, Gabriel, Saliba, and White, particularly I think in the air
A team with those 4, Partey, Xhaka has a level of physicality to deal with Palace. I even think our front 3 is looking pretty powerful as well!
Agreed. Anyone who says nowadays that Arsenal is soft hasn’t been paying attention
My thanks to whoever recommended Man Utd YouTube Mark Goldbridge, watching him try to defend his side’s dismal showing today while being interrupted by his chat crying that Arsenal had scored again – ah, made my day!
That is a serious team out there.
Arteta is surely arranging a mass destruction weapon at the emirates
I’ve never been this confident going into a season in a very long time ! Unbelievable!!!! My only worry is how sharply quality drops off when we play with our B-team like we did earlier this week. I think we still need 2 more additions in DM and perhaps left CB and we are good to go!
This seasons team is for a poster.
Imagine all of them come at age together
Xhaka having an immense preseason. The nutmeg pre-assist was the cherry on top of a stellar performance.
Yep hats off to him he’s looked good.
How did the Spuds do against Sevilla in preseason? Asking for a friend…
6 goals past a team that only conceded 30 all season in La liga.
It is of course only preseason and we should not get overexcited but there is a lot to be happy about, particularly if we make another signing or two. My one observation is that our bench lacked depth. Hopefully that will be rectified with injured players returning and a couple more signings.
They drew two weeks ago…
Didn’t they also recently sell their 2 best CBs (Kounde, Carlos)? That has to matter *a little.*
So that was the 4th best team in Spain, who qualified for Champions League and finished 3pts off second. Last week we played the team that came 3rd in the Prem and stuffed them too.
I am struggling not to get over excited, because we look like we are capable of anything!
El Arsenal seis; El Perro y El Pato cero.
Can we please have some REAL football now?
T minus 6 and counting my friend
https://www.realmadrid.com/en/real-madrid-tv
There you go fats
Brilliant team performance from one and all – yes even Cedric was ok-ish.
The starting XI was exactly the one I would pick for next Friday – and for however long it takes to give Tierney and Tommi the time to make a full recovery.
As for today, absolutely sublime performance: couldn’t ask for any more today.
I just hope that Saka is ok after being needlessly fouled by that Neanderthal.
Looking forward to these guys rocking up to Palace in the Pink Panther kit…!!
COYG
Pink panther…love it!
https://youtu.be/bii-PIGprv8
Martin Odegaard has got a new car to go with the Captaincy……
40-1 for us to win the league. Tempting.
Definitely.
I’ve had a ton on it!
Mate, get your money on before the odds are slashed when we rip Palace a new one….
Here, that Jesus fella ain’t bed eh.
My son is convinced we’ve got an invincibles season incoming…. I mean they laughed at Arsene for saying it last time??
The one that made me ROFLMFAO was when Maureen was asked if his Chelski team could go the whole season unbeaten when they were on a long run.
He said: “Such a thing is not possible”, which shows how much he knows about football.
Well it’s not possible for Chelsea tbf.
Can’t remember a preseason when the starters have looked so ready to get the season started. Obviously you can only read so much from preseason, but we have already seen just how much having Jesus in the attack has changed us and you can also see the continued growth and development of so many of the young players that are key parts of the squad. Exciting too that we’ve looked so good without three of our key players having played.
Sevilla had Bono in goal?
I know he’s fixated on saving things, but he should give it up and concentrate on the music.
Bono hasn’t written anything worthwhile since the 90s
So many good things to take from this preseason, one of them being Eddie consistently getting goals. I think this is going to be a big season for him and he’s going to prove a lot of doubters wrong.
Top class performance – what a massive difference having a top class striker at the club makes.
Lots of creativity in the team with the right player to finish the chances.
Looking forward to this season – a long time since I could say that…
Fantastic corner from Gabi, it falls to Gabi, ohh off the line but smashed in by Gabi. Happy days
Gabigoal!!
Jesus’ movement is causing so much chaos in defence and Arsenal have been on the receiving end of that chaos in the past. Good fit in this team. It frees up Saka and Martinelli to move around bit more which will make Ødegaard consistent 15+ assist player per season. Let’s keep healthy now. Saliba will be a beast. I like zinchenko movement too as he can fill in for Tierney and Xaka while White can fill in for Tomi and Thomas 9n top of CB positions. Plenty of options plenty of depth. I’d like to see how it all looks… Read more »
Wow. Emphatic is the word. We just ripped apart a team who held Sp*rs to a 1-1 draw a few days ago. We looked electric and always hungry. I think the five subs rule will work massively in our favour if we can keep up this intensity throughout games. I’m feeling truly optimistic for the first time in years.
It did look like that for both when first viewed.
However, Gabi Jesus’ movement was timed to perfection as he’s ghosted off the left CB, as was Gabi Martinelli’s timing of his run before crossing the halfway line.
What’s truly exiting is the speed of movement and passing.
For a long time (since the end of the AW era), our movement off the ball has been non-existent with way to much stopping and passing backwards.
Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.
If we continue to play with this speed and movement we’ll tear teams apart.
Didn’t Martinelli look super offside for the last goal? And the second Jesus goal looked tight too! Just wondering if the scoreline is a bit flattering, that’s all. Saw the highlights on Arsenal.com, which wasn’t very detailed. Thanks.
The pass to Martinelli was before the half line which won’t make him offside despite being the last player on that side.
Jesus has some Alexis Sanchez in him. For a player this technically gifted it’s unexpected to display this kind of effort on defense.
I think he has potential to be a better player than Alexis.
He already is.
So far he looks more of a team player than Sanchez imo.
U must be kidding me… Wat?
Insult to Alexis.
Nothing u guys won’t say on here. Shit
Love the unselfish pass for the sixth!!! Could have done with that at Birmingham back in 2008 – still can’t get over the fact we didn’t win the title that year!!!
Jesus will get the headlines, but I thought Martinelli was fantastic, and has showed real growth. A season ago he’d be taking that shot on himself instead of playing the pass to Eddie. He’s always terrified defenders, but he seems to have added that little bit of composure at the end that separates the “tricky winger” from the superstar in the making.
beautiful maturity from martinelli, especially when he could have done with a goal too. 👏
Hail yeah!!! COYG!!!
My first proper look at the team this summer.
I was expecting good things but I was a bit shocked at how easily we took control of this game.
The potential of that front 4 is scarily good. And Saliba? Wow!
Good to be a gooner!
