Ramsdale: We’ve got to do our basics better

Aaron Ramsdale’s first European appearance didn’t go to plan as Arsenal went down 2-0 at PSV Eindhoven.

While the Gunners came into the match having already qualified they were hoping to secure the single point that would have confirmed top spot in the group.

Instead, they delivered a horribly sloppy performance and were deservedly beaten by second half goals from Joey Veerman and substitute Luke de Jong. For the second, Ramsdale was very much culpable following a horrible flap at a corner.

After the game, he faced the BT Sport cameras. Here’s what he had to say…

On a European debut that didn’t go to plan…

Not at all, really. A disappointing end and obviously our 10-game unbeaten run has come to an end as well. Really disappointing to make a mistake but we’re looking forward now, we’re finished with this tonight. What’s gone on on the pitch we can’t change right now so Sunday it’s full focus on the Premier League and getting back to winning ways.

On what happened tonight…

There were a number of things. We’re a good enough team not to be blaming things, the pitch etc. There’s no point talking about that. We just didn’t compete too well off the ball. Credit to them as well, they were good with how they set up. It doesn’t help when you come away from home when your goalkeeper makes a mistake, two-nil and an uphill battle. It’s one which we couldn’t get back from.

On learning from the match…

Absolutely, even when we win it’s a learning curve because there are things that can be improved, individual things we can learn and collectively. Like I said, we’ll digest this now, the manager will go through it with us in the morning then we’ve got 48 hours until Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

On the last couple of results being a reality check…

Not really. The Southampton game, we know what went wrong and tomorrow we’ll know what went wrong in this game in more depth. The manager is great at giving us the detail we need to improve. I don’t think it’s a reality check but we need to go back to what we were doing, our basics, better than what we’ve shown in the last two games.

On it still being possible to finish top…

We would have loved to have done it tonight but we’ve got one more game to seal top spot and that’s what we’ll be going for at home in front of our fans. Hopefully, we’ll put on a better display because tonight wasn’t good enough and the travelling fans, travelled out here and we didn’t put in a shift for them really.

You’ve gotta admire a man that fronts up when he makes a mistake. Reset, and go again COYG

Funsho Patrick

Spoken like a Captain!

Magneto

He’s clearly been influenced by the squad’s unofficial Commander in Chief, GX. 🙂

Livingstone

I like the fact he highlighted that their second was a mistake from him. This is a sign of a player that will always improve and go on to become the very best.We move forward now.

Cranky Colin

He’s a great man!
Balls of steel.
Q……… how bad is Nelson? Doesn’t get a run in a game like this…….just continue with a knackered Gabi

Moxrex

I agree, he is not getting any minutes, if not at required level then sell him rather keeping him to sit on the bench.

Gooner 49

Where was Turner? was he not trusted not even on the bench.

Vonnie

Injured.

Goonshow

Fair do’s – he owned it. Good lad.
Some advice though, next cross you go to punch, just imagine the ball is Mike Dean’s head.

Vonnie

He really needs to settle down a bit, he’s going through one of his overexcited, ungrounded phases. When he’s like this he’s jittery and poor, if he cuts out the bullshit and gets focused he’s excellent.

Dave

Do you know why he likes complaining???

Paul

He will be a great keeper , but last 3 goals have been his mistakes , anticipated by moving the wrong way , needs to cut it out , plus has always looked weak at commanding the box , he will improve and has also made some great saves , but like he said , back to basic and stop anticipating
