Report: Arsenal offer Nelson new 4-year contract

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have made another contract offer to Reiss Nelson as they push hard to keep the winger.

The 23-year-old is the only Gunner to be out of contract this summer and is understood to be weighing up approaches from Premier League and continental clubs. It’s claimed a new deal at Emirates Stadium would run until 2027.

Nelson last signed a long-term contract in 2018 and has since embarked on loan spells with Hoffenheim and Feyenoord.

He’s been a more prominent member of Mikel Arteta’s first team squad this season making 17 appearances in all competitions.

While he’s only averaging 32-minute cameos, he’s proved he can have an impact, making two assists and scoring three goals, including the memorable late winner against Bournemouth.

Nelson’s contract negotiations appear to be running alongside those with Martin Odegaard, Ben White and William Saliba as Edu looks to reward good performances and protect long-term squad stability.

Bukayo Saka’s new deal will be announced imminently.

I do like Nelson, and it would be a shame to lose him for nothing

His lack of availability in the past, due to a variety of injuries, is a concern though

Dwd

I think a lot of it was mental with him, this season he plays much more with belief in his own abilities! I still think there is more to come from him!!

Johnny 4 Hats

I think it makes sense for Arsenal to protect an asset. Like Nketiah and Balogun, once they are signed, they can achieve a decent market value.

But if I were Nelson, I’d be reluctant to sign da ting.

He’s never going to usurp Saka or Martinelli and I think he’ll likely be behind Trossard and whoever WF we sign this summer too.

At 23 he needs to be playing regularly and he now will have a few options.

Mpls

Pretty much agree with all of that, but want to throw the extra competition requiring more rotation next season into the consideration set. And note the fact we’ve been lucky Saka has managed to stay healthy.

He may not be first choice, but I think he would see a lot more match time next season. From there it’s on him to be fit and firing.

I also look at the end of season taper and assume/hope Arteta has learned something about our players wearing down.

Qwaliteee

Still got your Europa head on?

We are trying to build a squad to cope with Premiership, Champions League and two domestic cups……..remember…?

Silentstan

Oh for gods sake. I thought we were trying to get to next level!!!
He has had 20 good minutes in 3 years

Jackie

You’re ridiculous.

Go support Man U who sort out all their problems in the market by buying players like Anthony.

Nelson is class. Given more minutes, he’ll get the goods. His final ball and decision making are actually top notch, and he is a very good dribbler of the ball. He’s also quite pacy and strong. I’m not sure why you’d not keep that for around 80 – 100k a week.

Leon

That’s it Jackie !
Attack someone with a different opinion to you.
Anyway.
I’m not bothered if he stays or leaves.
He had a few good moments this season but that is about it.
MA clearly like a particular kind of player and I don’t see him ousting Saka from that position any time soon.
If Nelson wants a footballing career and play weekly I see no reason why he should stay at Arsenal – there he will just be picking up[ a salary and doing nothing for it.

JacobD

£80-100k? Absolutely not. High salaries is a massive part of the reason we haven’t been able to shift players for nigh on a decade.

Jeremy

Come on Jackie. I don’t agree with Silentstan either but this is a forum to post an opinion and like everyone else he/she is welcome to his/hers. The comment isn’t in any way offensive/abusive and you can see why people may not be convinced by RN. ‘Go support someone else’ is such a petty attack which can get in the sea.

Homer

Jackie,
You didn’t attack SS’s silly comment. (and you didn’t insult him either as far as I can tell)

Dont sweat these folks below giving you grief.

Folks are so easily rattled these days. Good heavens.

Parteylikeits2001

We also need to have a squad with depth for the league that we will hopefully continue to challenge for next season, cups and champions league! We don’t have an unlimited amount of money like City to have depth either. Yes we will be buying to add depth, as well as selling some players. So I wish we could bring a Mahrez on as a 3rd/4th place winger like City do but if we are able to do that, it will take a few years. Nelson in that time, will have shown he can cut it or not and we… Read more »

Gio

Yes, i agree with you, we need better

Diaminedave

Passes the eye test, the stats test and end product test for me
3 goals 2 assists in 178 min of football in Premiership
Passing at 89% acc

Leon

Or you could look at it as 3 goals and 2 assists in 3420 potential minutes of football (38 games)
I like Nelson as a player but on the salary that is being mooted and given the limited number of squad places I don’t think it represents great value.
We need a squad of players where anyone can come in and get the job done. This is where we have struggled – Turner, Holding and Vieira have been examples of this.

Diaminedave

Wow harsh…for me would have been a good punt for more minutes!

C.B.

You are right, he should have scored a lot more goals and made more assists whilst sitting on the bench…

A.P

He should have been good enough to not sit so much on the bench.

Sinoia

I think you will find that the few times he was asked he
” got the job done”
If they are offering him a new contract that’s the reason why.

A Different George

Turner? I must have missed something.

dada

i am potentially an Arsenal player.

El Mintero

@Leon, Reiss has a lot of potential if he gets a consistent run in the team. If we let him move on who else represents better quality for same money? But will he want to take the risk of being nothing more than back up? Same situation as KT.

Jackie

Sign him up. He’s wonderful with the group. He seems to have found his belief back. He’ll push everyone who’s ahead of him and looks like he’ll be determined to take the opportunity whenever it presents itself.

Always believed in Reiss’ talent. I’m glad that he too believes in it now.

Prakhar

Nelson was better than Sancho when both were academy young. Nelson is still better, but he was better also.

Emily Durron

“The 23-year-old is the only Gunner to be out of contract this summer”.

Not quite. Ainsley MN is the other one.

Jeremy

No issue with this. Better than losing him for free. Love me a bit of Lord Nelson. I enjoy his direct style and I think he can get much better.

Onenil

Agree with this, he brings something different on the wing and to lose him on a free would be crazy. If Arteta thinks he can go to the next level I trust him.

Unknown

I’d love to see him stay and play. I’d hate for him to stay and, let’s be honest, get ESR treatment. He’s better than that and he knows it himself. Seems like he’s given a chance to play only when Arteta’s hair is on fire and junk time. He could have and should have been used more this season. He’s also seen ESR and Nketiah and Balgoun given playing time just before they too signed new long term contract just for all 3 to be benched and to be a plan B occasionally exception being Balgoun on loan. I hate… Read more »

Jimboslice

Boy deserves it even if it’s only for glimpses. In all honesty thought his time was done but those last couple late goal game changers, definitely could of had a part to play at the end of this season if it wasn’t for the injury.

UGooner

Not a load of minutes. But worked hard when brought on, and mostly impressive when called upon. Most of all, always worked hard and passionate about the Arse. He is one of us, hope he signs and wish him the best!

karl g

Good move. He’ll get plenty of playing time next season and if it doesn’t work out, at least we’ll get a fee for him.

Man Manny

Good move by the club. I don’t think Arteta sees him beyond backup for Martinelli next season while other key areas get strengthened this summer. If it doesn’t work out, the club can now get some money from his sale next season.

honda

As much as I want to keep him, I’m a bit surprised that Arteta wants him. This season, he played 172 minutes in the League, 63 coming on for injured Bukayo and wasn’t given a single start. Given that we’ll most likely be investing in another winger… Well, hopefully we’ll fit him in somewhere, he looked very bright when he came on.

Andy

For his own good, I think he should go. It is quite clear that Arteta is looking to add another Winger to the squad, pushing Reiss further down the pecking order. Raphinha and Mudryk all failed attempts to sign anothrr Winger in the past.

Martin R

What is Trossard?

Badaab

Attacking player who can fill any role asked in the forward line, plus he can play wingback if required.

Qwaliteee

A great talent whose potential is enormous.

Hopefully he’ll sign and stay an important part of the process.

wrightstuff8

Exactly this. A good move for all involved.

Chrispy

Good news if he signs on. Too good to give away, a hale end lad and ready to blow up with more coaching.

lonsdale

I was about to say we should probably drop him off down the road then, if he’s ready to blow up…. then I remembered they don’t have a coach!

lonsdale

But yes, I think he’s shown real promising signs this season, and has added something when subbed on during games.
Driving at defences and challenging defenders 1-on-1 being the main thing, as he had seemed to lose that over the past couple of years.

Hopefully he can continue the progress, and be the next Hale End lad making a real impact for Arsenal (albeit a couple of years after we initially expected)

Daniel Wynne

one of those players who is maybe taking longer than most to get to the level hes capable of but i think hes really progressing so we should try to keep him

Pat Rice and Beans

Could be a ‘cheap’ and valuable squad player. With UCL + domestics cups next season, he’ll get more minutes for sure, but still far behind Saka, Martinelli and Trossard.

Geefive

I hope he stays. With CL added we should be rotating the starting XI more often this coming year anyways (Please don’t grind Saka into the ground). We need decent rotating/bench guys with talent to keep up with the Joneses and compete for trophies in the future, and Nelson, i think, has the talent to be one of the cogs in a hopefully cabinet-filling Arsenal machine.

jasonissimo

Sensible, of course. AFC has a place in the squad for RN, so they made him an offer. If he can get better terms and/or more minutes elsewhere, he can still go. It’s up to him.

If he stays, we are going to sign a top-class winger and possibly sell another squad player.
If he departs, we are going to sign a top-class winger and probably keep someone else (instead of sell) or buy another squad player.

My point is, keeping a capable squad player like Reiss Nelson does not prevent improvement. It prevents regression.

Savage

Arteta sees him almost every day, so if he’s wanting to renew, then maybe we can be excited that there’s something extra that we haven’t seen yet

Bob the gunner

I take him over Sancho any day. Sign da thing Reiss.

Badaab

Reiss deserves to be happy and healthy and playing football. If that’s not with us next season, I wish him well for the future.
