Katie McCabe’s winning goal against Manchester City in April has been voted as the WSL Goal of the Season. The Irish international collected a short corner in the 75th minute at Meadow Park with the scores locked at 1-1 and proceeded to unleash a trademark McCabe drive into the top corner.
The goal essentially secured UWCL qualification for the Gunners given that they eventually finished above City on goal difference in the final UWCL qualification spot. The goal took on extra significance because McCabe left Emirates Stadium on crutches and in a boot just four days earlier after taking a painful whack in the 2-0 UWCL quarter-final win over Bayern Munich four days earlier.
McCabe still had a hole in her boot from the challenge that saw her take the blow to the left foot. McCabe told Arseblog News after the game, “It was more than a whack! The foot wasn’t in a good way on Wednesday, it was absolutely rattled but our medical team have done an unbelievable job on the quick turnaorund.
“My foot has been in ice for the last four days trying to get the swelling down. It’s well padded up but it still works! You can actually see the hole in the boot from the stud.”
She’s some woman for one woman! Can’t wait to see her lead Ireland out at the World Cup
That was an absolutely phenomenal goal,
so glad Katie has got this recognition for it.
What a goal! What a player! Congratulations, Katie McCabe!
Well deserved!
The men’s team would have been proud of that goal!
Any football fan would be proud of that goal. Katie has stepped up when she became captain.
And with a bad foot too!
I doubt if she was in pain, she would have been given painkillers, but the foot was padded so I am impressed by her control and feel.
Simply one of the best players in the world. I am English but l will certainly be rooting for Ireland second on to England…. for Katie
Who I support after England depends on which team has Arsenal players. Ireland v Switzerland would be a hard call!
Definitely the moment of the season for me. From my seat in the East Stand I was exactly behind it and watched it go straight into the top corner!
