Arsenal Women at the World Cup: Walti, Maritz and Maanum face off in Group A stalemate

On day five of the Women’s World Cup Lia Walti and Noelle Maritz’s Switzerland faced off against Frida Maanum’s Norway in Hamilton.

Switzerland and Norway played out a 0-0 draw with the Norwegians controversially dropping Caroline Graham Hansen and Ingrid Engen from the starting line-up and Ada Hegerberg had to drop out of the line-up moments before kickoff due to illness. The three Gunners found time to chat and pose for a photo after the game.

The result leaves Norway’s fate out of their own hands going into their final game against Philippines, while a win for Switzerland will see them top the group. It looks like a second consecutive group stage exit for a very talented Norway team.

In the other games of the day Philippines blew the group open by beating New Zealand on home turf, while Colombia defeated Korea 2-0. Tomorrow sees another all Arsenal clash at 1pm UK as Cloe Lacasse and Sabrina D’Angelo’s Canada face Katie McCabe’s Ireland.

I still think Norway might sneak through, I’m a Kiwi & I don’t want them to, on the other hand somethings not right in camp with CGH & Engen not starting

Frida had a much reduced role during the last Olympics but I didn’t hear her complain. She just took her game up a gear in the ensuing season and earned back her starting spot in the national team. All the best against the Philippines, Frida!

Fun Gunner

Extraordinary situation that Norway are bottom of their group after two games!
Well done to Switzerland. Bit conservative for my taste, but I’m happy for Lia and Nöelle, but now because of the result of the other match, they have to beat NZ. And Norway have to score a lot of goals against the Philippines. Maanum had a much better game and looked so much happier beforehand.
