Manchester United and their whiny manager were sent back to Old Trafford with their tails between their legs after Arsenal snatched a late win on an afternoon when the Gunners deserved the points but might easily have lost.
Stoppage time strikes by Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus secured a 3-1 victory that sent the Emirates into ecstasy after VAR played a defining role; first ruling out an Arsenal penalty when Kai Havertz was adjudged retrospectively not to have been fouled, and then chalking off a Alejandro Garnacho strike for offside.
In the first half, the two sides traded fine strikes in the space of a minute with Marcus Rashford putting the visitors ahead out of nothing before Martin Odegaard polished off a fine move.
After the game, the coaches, players and pundits had their say on an enthralling encounter. Here’s what was said…
Arteta on the win and VAR decisions…
I’m so happy, obviously. The emotion at the end is the reason why we are all in this industry and why we work so hard, to earn the right to live those moments. It was great, again, in front of our fans. The way the final 15-20 minutes went as well, I’m so extremely proud of the team. [VAR] It’s part of the game, we knew about it. I think both decisions can be viewed in different ways but I think overall the performance of the team deserves the win, that’s for sure.

Mikel Arteta on Thomas Partey’s injury…
I don’t know [how bad it is]. Unfortunately he got an injury in training and it doesn’t look good, we need some more tests, we believe he’s going to be out for weeks. We think it’s a groin but can be something in between.

Declan Rice on his first goal for the club…
What a moment, you know, what a moment to score. So many people told me that I’d score today, it’s weird, like staff members and players had a funny feeling and getting myself into good positions but to finish that one off and you know get the three points I think you can see the relief. I’m still recovering now.

Erik ten Hag on his side’s defeat…
We needed a little bit more luck to win the game. It was not offside [for Alejandro Garnacho goal]. It was the wrong angle. It was then a penalty on [Rasmus] Hojlund and then we concede a goal that’s a foul on Jonny Evans. It’s so clear and obvious. You can say you need to finish your chances and that you shouldn’t concede a goal after going 1-0 up. This is all true, but I was happy with the performance.
[Editor’s note: Yeah, ok mate…LOL]

Arteta on another positive cameo from Fabio Vieira…
Every player has a chance to do that, today we decided to start with Kai, we knew that Fabio would have a big impact, especially in the last few minutes, or final minutes if we needed something and something has changed with Fabio, you notice with the crowd when he steps in he is different to how he was last year, he’s more mature, he’s more senior in the squad and his confidence in the squad is high so I’m really happy to have those options.

Aaron Ramsdale on celebrating Declan Rice’s goal
The celebrations were crazy, and we just sung “Rice Rice Baby”. Honestly, it was a strange afternoon. I never thought I’d hear “Rice Rice Baby” in a football stadium with a bunch of 30 people ranging from 40-year-olds to 18-year-olds dancing around, but that’s football and that’s what we love!

Mikel Arteta on his side’s never-say-die spirit…
I love the mentality of the team, the determination, the eagerness to win and go and go and go. We never give up. Obviously we gave them the first goal in a situation that we discussed. They kill you if you do that and we did, but we reacted straight away and I think, overall over the 100 minutes, the team was very dominant and deserved to win the game, but to be fair the margins with this team are so small and it could have gone in a different way.”

Roy Keane on Arsenal’s title credentials…
Arsenal proved last year to be the best of the rest and I think they’re probably the strongest group amongst the other teams at this moment in time. I still think the gap to City is there, but yeah, big win today, that momentum, the bit of quality, the spirit, a couple of players off the bench…the feel-good factor is with Arsenal. But if they dropped points today, I think it would have been a huge setback for them, that momentum and that feel-good factor, considering last week at home to Fulham, chalk and cheese today, and they’ll have a spring in their step.

Gary Neville on Arsenal’s start to the season…
One thing about Arsenal is they started off the last season like a house on fire. They were unbelievable in that first half of the season, and then they fell off at the end. The fact that they’re not at their best, but they’re picking up 10 points out of 12, isn’t a bad thing, because the form needs to really start coming after Christmas in February and March. They’ll need to play better than they are at the moment but I wouldn’t worry about it too much at this stage.

— Eddie Nketiah 📞 (@EddieNketiah9) September 3, 2023
I am deeply sorry that we robbed the mu’s well deserved 3 points today and made Anthony look like a clown again.
If we can capture the energy from antony’s useless spinning around we could solve climate change
How many Antonys does it take to power a windmill?
Half.
Ten Haag tried to overturn 3-1 deafeat to 1-3 victory. LOL
Just watched the replay. Holy fuck! What a roller coaster. Think I lost a few months off the end of life from that one. I called the offside life, but it was tight (correct). Penalty is ridiculous, clear contact, no other team in the league gets that overturned. But that finish. Rice rice baby! What a player…motm. Jesus with the nail! Oh baby, oh you sweet gooners. Let’s go!
Seriously the gulf between Antony and Martinelli is absolutely massive.
One has speed and can take you off the dribble and make things happen, works hard and can hang on to possession. The other works hard and can hang on to possession and do wheelies and keepie uppies. Guess which cost 6 million and which cost 100 million?
Wow, Jesus is really good on ball. Reminded me of the real Ronaldo with his finish.
The original Ronaldo
Well, the other one looks fake!
He should change his name to Erik ten Excuses
When Gary Neville says he can’t believe the penalty was overturned… And you still complain…lol!
Someone should ask him the difference between that one & Rashford’s last week? Oh wait, it was the badge on the shirt. He also has to be the only person besides Evans & Slabhead who actually thinks that was a foul on Evans rather than good blocking off by Gabriel
Who downvotes this comment? Explain yourself.
Erik needs Ten Hugs
Ten eggs is enough for that guy.
Ten Hags. Chasing him all the way back up the M1.
Most Arsenal fans around the world…
Fuck Roy Keane, fuck Gary Neville and most definitely fuck Man U!
It’s always excuses whenever they lose. They’re never outplayed but it’s always down to bad officiating, some guy in Block 32 vaping or the sun being too low in the sky
Although he is a massive penis I think Keane’s comment was fair today. As for ETH though…Christ what a crybaby. He’s obviously spent too much time around Fernandes.
Not seen much of the Sky analysis cause I was travelling home but Roy seemed to be in a good mood in the interview with Dec which makes a change from him foaming at the mouth like a rabid dog whenever United lose. Well Bruno didn’t do much moaning today so ETH was clearly making up for his captains failure
The difference between Keane and the rest of them is Roy Keane loathes everyone, he just generally loathes people. He might loathe Man Utd 20% less than everyone else but really only historically, he probably thinks the current squad are a bunch of sissies who lack toughness, coached by a sissy Dutch coach (and honestly he might have a point) so he can be a bit more objective about things through his loathing-tinted glasses
This is actually bang on. Hopefully he loathes Gary Neville and Andros Townsend too. They’ve earned it.
😅😂🤣🥲
Don’t forget the wrong colour shirts🤣
Our away kit this season is pretty atrocious but at least it’s ours. We didn’t steal it off Newcastle.
They were actually T*tt*nh*m in disguise, but they’re so shit they disguised themselves as Newcastle by mistake.
That’s the prison FC jersey mate. My missus said it.
The Newcastle shirts were available because Newcastle wore the Saudi kit yesterday. Seriously.
Wtf was that they wore today? I wasn’t a fan of our away shirt(it’s grown on me since Palace) but at least it’s got some colour too it, that United shirt is just so bland
I heard the designer had said he wanted it to reflect their football.
😂👏🏼
Ten Hags comments were just embarrassing. Notice he didn’t mention the overturned penalty……
“Moan, moan, moan, excuse, excuse, blame left and right, bitch, moan, bitch and moan but I was happy with the performance.”
Erik Moan Hag
He fits in at united- persecution complex and entitled.
He thought for a few moments he had a smash & grab win, and then it was all snatched away from him. I can ALMOST feel sympathy for him.
NAH.
He did mention the overturned penalty he was moaning how it was given in the first place even though it got overturned lololol. Even though it’s identical to the Rashford pen from last week. Even though the only team that got robbed this season in a United game was Wolves at Trafford.
I think it’s best they feel like they got robbed so they stick to the same setup (tactics which would make Tony Pulis proud) instead of actually improving.
4 games in & United have looked dogshite in all 4. Wolves & Forest should’ve both had at least a point barring 2 terrible penalty calls & they’ve been outplayed on both trips to North London
Since Sir Alex, Man U have had a string of managers who haven’t been up to snuff, often in a comical way. Moyes looked like a butler trying to run the house after it’s owner has mysteriously disappeared, wondering when his patron will return. Van Gaal decided to turn them into some bizarre Football Manager experiment, Mourinho was a joke, and Ole reminded me of a kid who went to work with his dad to job shadow him and then accidentally got left in charge for a couple seasons. I think, under this current manager and ownership, Man U have… Read more »
Perfect analysis on the postfergie managers. Thx!
It’s interesting that David Luiz conceded a peno and was sent off for….. “ we’re not sure if he deliberately tapped the strikers calf”, so it possibly was a very sly movement to deny the shot. All done so slyly at amazing speed. David Luiz? You’re kidding me ref. I don’t think so. Havertz was an obvious take down compared with that clusterfuck. No peno and no red. So EricTen Assholes , put ur neck back in your trousers and fuck off Northbound. Actually, one of our lads got a straight red for what Lindelof did , taking out Eddie… Read more »
Erik ten hag better see a ban and fine for this whinging- if it were arteta he’d be barred for the season
Lol… Yeah right. He’ll probably get the result overturned knowing pgmol. Fuck Manuel, and their ten hags!
Manure*
I learnt tonight that Havertz is Arsenal’s highest paid player – by some margin. £100k a week more than Saka, £40k a week more than Rice and 3x more than Trossard. Not only was he overpriced at £65m, but he’s costing the club an absolute fortune (£14.6m a year) in wages.
What should fans expect of their club’s highest paid players?
I know what I think about this, but keen to hear others’ thoughts.
Arsenal F.C. 2023-24 Payroll Table | Spotrac
No wonder Arteta is trying so hard to talk him up and crowbar him into the team at any cost.
For the price of Havertz, you cold have both Saka AND Odegaard. Or N’Ketiah, Martinelli and Trossard, with change.
Can we just take a moment to congratulate Havertz’ agent Hannes Winzer on doing an absolutely spectacular job.
Hard to believe don’t think I do..
Do you go around comparing salaries with your coworkers?
Errr, yeah?
Yeah it’s not looking great at the moment. We have a lot invested in him coming good.
Is this really what you want to talk about after that game? Do you enjoy football?
No. He’s like Eric Ten Nag. He loves to moan. They can’t help but be discontent. Doesn’t matter how good things are. They look for one thing, one thing to complain and be angry about.
speak for yourself, chump. It’s an interesting point of discussion that Havertz is the highest paid player on the team, whether you like it or not. I’m not trying to get at him, but if you discover the laziest, most unproductive guy in your office is paid twice as much as you would quite reasonably question why that is the case.
why? because you are shite, following your logic…
You know those zen guys who say don’t concern yourself with what you can’t change because it’s pointless and bad for you? You’re in that zone now.
its not an interesting point of discussion after taking 3 points from ManU at home when we were behind, 2 overturned VAR calls, another Fabio brilliant pass, our Captain finding form and the back of the net, Martinelli’s endless supply of corners, Saka’s brilliant corner, the second coming of Jesus, these are all interesting talking points. Highlighting a players salary who hasn’t fully integrated into the squad to satisfy your ego that you know better than the manager, is not interesting in the slightest. Support the team. Negativity spawns negativity.
Wow. Had no idea he was on that much. That’s fkn insane.
Those numbers are made-up. He’s not our highest paid player.
Really? In fact a simple Google search puts him earning more than the £280k a week stated in the link I posted, with other sources quoting £320k and £330k a week. Still the highest paid Arsenal player by all sources that I can see.
According to Salary Sport (Arsenal 2023 Wages | Player & Team totals (salarysport.com ) these are the top 5 earners:
Declan Rice£240,000£12,480,00023D C, DMEngland
Kai Havertz£240,000£12,480,00023AM/F CGermanyT
homas Partey£160,000£8,320,00029DMGhana
Martin Ødegaard£115,000£5,980,00023AM CNorway
Nicolas Pépé£105,000£5,460,00027AM RLIvory Coast
You really need to be told not to believe everything you see on the internet? This Havertz thing with some supporters is getting pretty tedious, he’s not been brilliant but he hasnt been that bad either. Time will tell if he’s a good acquisition but does it really need to be discussed in every single conversation? Cant we just enjoy the win today?
Some people have to have something to pick at no matter what the performance of the team.
I’ve seen the same numbers on capology. I consider that a reliable source.
All guesswork
How do you know? I mean, I don’t want this to be true either but it says verified and everything. Their website says that means it’s been validated by someone who’s seen the contract or at least two independent sources.

‘We think it’s a groin but can be something in between.’
Inbetween his groin? His penis?
Are they trying to describe ETH?
Oh I do love anatomy. Maybe it’s the right testicle?
Inverted right testicle. Plays in the middle.
right testicle? 🤣🤣🤣
Last season Arsenal flew out of the blocks while City stuttered. They got into their stride at the tail end while Arsenal stuttered. This season seems to be the reverse at this beginning; I hope we can stay the course this season and beat City to it.
Liverpool look like a third force this time around though.
too bad jonny evans was busy throwing gabriel to ground and forgot to defend
What’s funny is he only complains about a foul cause it deflects in off him, if that goes behind for another corner or Onana doesn’t have butter wrists then there’s no complaints & it’s called good defending
calling it now. viera will go on to become an arsenal legend. the quality and consistency of his final action is so so good. the weight of his passes, his shooting and accuracy. he’s been improving physically as well. i think if he keeps improving at this rate, stops falling over when he’s challenged, we might have the next kdb in our hands.
You’re not the first to make that comparison. Coming out of Portugal, his profile as a two footed ball striking extraordinaire was what merited the price tag. He looks like a different animal this year physically. His spring and acceleration stand out, and his upper body is thicker. That speaks of a player that wants to improve. Couple that with the natural talent he has… woof. Ceiling could be as high as David Silva. Not sure he’ll ever drive with the ball like KdB, but even 50% of that would be enough to be an impact player given his other… Read more »
No way, we have to judge him on his first 4 appearances. Too weak, lacks confidence and is lazy. As Robbie Williams sang I often think that we were born to hate
Get up and see the sarcasm in my eyes
Yes, our own fans shit on him forever. Now he is a legend? Xhaka…same.,. so many players.. same. Legend, eh?
Same tools who shit on Havertz. Our win is your loss. Your bitter tears – fuck you. This is not AFTV.
Too weak, small and one footed to be KDB. Next Bernardo Silva more likely (no complaints Bernardo is world class too!)
yea but he seems a lot stronger than last season. probably has been putting in work and will only get better. the reason i say similar to kdb is cause he seems to have a great long range shot and final ball. there this video on how his per minute stats are also very similar to david silva and de bruyne. and viera is more effective when he plays centrally or is playmaking where as bernardo is more effective from the wing. he’s seems good i guess thats all that matters.
The next De Bruyne would be nice. By the way, did you notice who scored our first goal? He’s pretty good too.
he most definitely is
He got 15 mins today, calm down.
You can’t mention the assist can you? Such negativity by so called “fans”. SMH
that the whole point of calling it – small sample size
Gaspacho was clearly offside 😊
cazpacho please…
He’s here, he’s there, he’s f*cking everywhere, Declan Rice, Declan Rice.
Fuck me is that a compliment from the Nevill sister 😉
What is it with some of you? Can’t resist the chance to have yet another *let’s slag Havertz off* moment. Did you watch the match yesterday? He wasn’t the worst player by a long way! Saka had a pretty off day as did Eddie? And what about the defending for the first goal? Saliba and Gabriel could have done better there! But no we need a scapegoat so let’s pick Havertz just because he hasn’t hit the ground running (no crime in that it took TH14 9 games to get a goal and Koscielny had a pretty abject entire first… Read more »
Ego merchants trying to salve their fragile egos by tearing someone else down to feel better about themselves. Pork chop tied around the neck kids cause that’s the only way the dog would play with them.
I was vibrating with nerves by the end. Don’t get me wrong, the roar that goes up when we get these late winners give me life, but I’d rather a series of very comfortable 3-0 wins.
I don’t know what Ten Hag is whinging about – seemed all correct decisions to me – especially what they got away against Wolves and Forest. They only want to catch you on the break which is what we should have been more aware of but what a satisfying result
