Gabi-goals – Premier League reverses own goal ruling

The Premier League have confirmed that Arsenal’s second goal against Crystal Palace has been accredited to Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Brazil international had already opened the scoring with aan early header when he repeated the trick on 37 minutes, climbing at the back post to convert a Bukayo Saka corner.

While the defender’s effort ricocheted into the net off goalkeeper Dean Henderson, it was announced in the stadium and by Opta, the Premier League’s official data partners, that the Arsenal man had scored.

Only later did he and matchgoing fans find out that the Premier League Goal Acccreditation Panel had intervened to determine it an own goal because they felt the header wasn’t actually going in.

Following an Arsenal appeal, the panel has overturned their decision and credited Gabriel. He has three goals for the season and 14 in total for the club. No defender has scored more in the Premier League since he arrived from Lille in 2020. Saka also earns an assist which takes his total for the campaign to eight.

The Gunners’ 5-0 win was pockmarked by lengthy VAR checks for Arsenal’s first three goals. In the first two instances, Palace players appealed for non-existent fouls by Gabriel and in the second half, Stockley Park took an absolute age to determine Leandro Trossard was onside when he collected Gabriel Jesus’ pass to score.

On a day when the atmosphere at Emirates Stadium was already pretty flat, repeated interruptions to goal celebrations really sucked the joy out of things on the terraces.

Never a doubt for me

Ebo

No but incredibly surprising to have these people get a decision right for once, especially having gotten it wrong in the first place, for the PL to actually have the humility to admit a mistake? With Arsenal? *checks if hell has frozen*

Andros

So saka has assist ?

Tapps

It would have always been a Gabi goal for me.

Public Elneny

I want to work for the Dubious Goals Committee when I grow up

P.D.

You’re out of luck I’m afraid. Being a grown up disallows you from getting the job.

TeeCee

So your work can get overturned by the Certain Goals Committee?

Public Elneny

My dad has connections in the Goalscorer Declarification Committee

Xuan

Following the Asian Cup, and wondering why the semi-automated offside technology is not being used in the epl.

Undermines pgmol’s ability to creatively interpret the rulebook

Santi’s Phonebox

Thereby rewarding their handlers.

Daveo

Zactly. VAR is just a tool for more manipulation and control.

Alan Sunderland

Exactly, I was making some good money betting on games pre var. I stopped about a month after var was implemented. I honestly don’t know what a foul or an offside is anymore. It seems to me to completely change week to week. What constitutes Violent conduct baffles me even more. Creatively interpret is an accurate but very polite way of explaining what the pgmol are doing.

allezkev

I actually really enjoyed watching some of the recent FACup ties that didn’t have VAR constantly interfering.

Vonnie

Seems that the powers that be are determined to prevent Arsenal from scoring goals, even when they have to make them own goals. Lengthy nit picking VAR for offsides when it’s clearly onside by a mile. Own goal when it’s clearly a Gabi goal. I’m pleased for him, and the “Premier League Goal Accreditation Panel” can go to hell, who are these anonymous fuckers anyway?

Martigoal

Plot twist: one of the anonymous fuckers was someone close to you. Et tu, Brute?

truj

Kolopp can go and manage the spuds or anything else but I don’t give a bit of a fish’s tit.

Savage

The most important issue here is Fantasy points of course 🙂

With Saka being my captain for the day, that assist…

loose_cannon

I captained Saka as well, unfortunately we won’t get the extra points though 🙁

Savage

Fine. At least my rival with Gabriel in his team won’t get them either. As we were…

Chapeau

You’re the on jinxing Saka when you coulda captained a Palmer or anyone else

Fenko

What if Gabriel has scored another goal for a hattrick in the game with the second goal given as own goal? He would have been recorded as scoring a brace and denied him of the match ball honor.
Now that the goal has been credited to him, how would he have received the match ball?
Will the match ball be mailed to him?

Daveo

Oh, even moreso. Imagine the delight of these FA stooges being able to deny an arsenal player a hattrick.

Chapeau

I’m afraid the match will have to be replayed on a neutral ground without Gabriel and VAR to avoid the same mistake

Fatgooner

A blind man in a cave could see that the ball was going in when it hit the keeper. Don’t see why it’s taken so long to correct that stupid match day decision.

BTW: it’s fantastically exciting all these signings were making, isn’t it?

We can kiss the title goodbye for this season now. But remember: fourth is a trophy.

Taariq

We literally don’t have money to spend…lol

Daveo

We have no money? I mean crooked Stan is loaded. Or do you mean it’s because FFP applies to every team with the exception of Chelsea, man city and now Newcastle? Teams whose owners have lined the pockets of the crooks in the FA and PGMOL for decades.

Paul

Which striker would win us the league Fats? It’s gone already imo.

Daveo

Kylian would for sure be helpful.

El Mintero

The battle for fourth will be interesting…

Chapeau

It’s quite frustrating, Fats. My grandpa is on the market fgs

Owl faced Deeney's cojones

We will need goals that ricochet off Ederson or Alison into the net.

Tobi6footplus

“Following an Arsenal appeal…..” we are really putting our foot down regarding what we’re owed. Little wonder why we are getting hated on more than ever. Love it 😀

Doghouse

Great to see Gabi getting his deserved 2nd goal, like his 1st wanting it more, wondering now how much bonus he gets for goals scored being a defender v a forward 🤔

Naked Cygan

Even off the pitch in fantasy football these bastard$ find a way to screw me over.

Paul

If you have one panel that views a video and comes up with an answer, then another panel that views the same video and comes up with a different answer then VAR is pointless. Leave it to the referee. #VAROUT

Chapeau

How then does Anthony Taylor get paid thrice a week?

A Different George

You mean the referee when we won our last two FA Cups? The one who sent a Chelsea player off in each of those finals? Including giving a second yellow for diving? Yeah, he must be part of the anti-Arsenal conspiracy.

Chapeau

Why does that linked Arsenal article have all those typos? “Trent Alexander-Armstrong” is the funniest for me
