Report: Marseille rekindle interest in Tavares

According to L’Equipe, Marseille could be tempted to re-sign Nuno Tavares as they search for a new left-back.

The Portugal under-21 international is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest but his spell at the City Ground has not been a happy one. He started the first three Premier League games of the season for Steve Cooper but then made the matchday squad as an unused sub on two of the next 11 games.

The recent arrival of countryman Nuno Espirito Santo has seen Tavares return to action – he featured in both of Forest’s FA Cup third round ties with Blackpool – but you suspect the player would jump at the chance to spend the second half of the campaign elsewhere.

Tavares spent the whole of the 22/23 season on loan at the Stade Velodrome scoring six goals for Marseille in 39 appearances. It wasn’t all plain sailing – Nuno’s chaotic style often led to criticism in the media – but at least he was given a platform to showcase his qualities.

It’s hard to judge whether there’s any truth in the latest link but you can understand why l’OM, now managed by Gennaro Gattuso, might rekindle their interest given struggles to sign alternatives, including Adrien Truffert of Stade Rennais.

Tavares is under contract at Arsenal until the summer of 2025. Realistically, he’s not going to be handed a new deal and the club will try and offload him in the summer on a permanent basis.
