James Sweet receives further first-team recognition

Last night’s defeat to Porto was certainly frustrating but for defender James Sweet the experience wasn’t an entirely negative one.

For the second game in succession (and the third occasion overall) Sweet was named amongst the substitutes for an Arsenal first-team fixture.

The 20-year-old has been rewarded for his consistent performances for Arsenal at U21 level and is now getting to experience what it is like to be a senior player in terms of training and travelling with the squad.

Sweet will hope for further call-ups before the end of the campaign but it isn’t entirely clear what lies in store for him once the season is over.

In 2022, Sweet signed his first professional contract with the club but it remains to be seen if he will still be with Arsenal next season. If he does stay then a first loan move would represent another step in the right direction.

Sweet’s journey at Arsenal has certainly been an interesting one as he usually played as a central midfielder or a winger during his time as a scholar.

The youngster subsequently made the switch to right-back and has often impressed in that position, while he has also filled in at left-back when needed. A hard-working player who relishes pushing forward, Sweet is also adept at playing as an inverted full-back.

Sweet’s involvement with the first-team squad should help to further increase his prominence and next season he will be aiming to play senior football of some description.

The defeat left a sour taste and a bitter feeling, but I’m not going to stay salty about it. At least for James things were a bit more… spicy
