Confirmed: Takehiro Tomiyasu signs new Arsenal contract

Arsenal have confirmed that versatile full-back Takehiro Tomiyasu has signed a new deal that rewards him with a pay increase and keeps him at the club until 2027.

The Gunners already had an option to extend the player’s current deal by an extra 12 months to 2026 so, in essence, it’s a one-year extension.

The 25-year-old joined the club from Bologna in the summer of 2021 for £16 million plus add-ons and has featured across the backline. To date, he’s made 73 appearances for the Gunners, scoring once and making six assists.

While his time at Emirates Stadium has been largely positive, serious injuries have regularly stopped Tomi from building momentum. A persistent calf injury wrecked the second half of his first season while a knee problem meant he missed the tail end of the last campaign. This season, the calves have been playing up again.

Conscious of being labelled injury-prone, Tomiyasu actually asked the club to delay announcing his new deal until he was back fit. Having made the bench for the win over Porto, he must feeling more comfortable about a moment in the limelight.

On the decision to extend Tomiyasu’s contract, Arteta said: “We are so pleased to have Tomi commit his future with us. Together with his natural ability and strength, Tomi’s attitude, mentality and values are first-class. Tomi is loved by everyone and has been an integral part of the squad since joining us.

“The way he trains, with his desire and determination to be the best version of himself every day is admirable. We look forward to continue working with Tomi in the future years.”

Accidental thumbs down while trying to do Google translate. Terribly sorry old chap!

Absolute great news that another vital part to our defence has signed for multiple years!

I remember that Sky Sports reporter on deadline day in 2021 who laughed at us signing him, because he couldn’t figure out whether his best position was right back or centre back… In hindsight, it’s exactly what Arteta is looking for in a defender 🙂

Yeah. And the Sky Sports clown forgot to add “left back.”

Onenil

Happy with this. We need a squad who can all be first choice, Tomi is that level.

Johnny 4 Hats

He’s at the level for sure. World class on his day. Just as is Partey, Zinchenko and Gabby Jesus. But his injury record worries me. I think we need to look at shipping some of these injury prone players. I love them all but you can’t have 4 or 5 perpetually injured players in your squad. We can handle a couple but when you have so many where it’s just assumed they won’t be fit then you’ve got a problem. Really interested to see who goes this summer. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we are open to moving… Read more »

Injury prone players is a fluid thing sometimes. You can decide to sell and they end up being fitter than the shiny new fit player we buy. So I think the medical team, coach, Edu will have better data to make those decisions. With this extension, I believe we will get a lot more out of him. And despite his injuries, teams still hold interest in him. Reminds me of the Marc Overmars story and how medics said before we signed him, he had 3-4 years in his knee, sold him to Barca 2 and a half years later, for… Read more »

I so hope you are right. Obviously there are exceptions but the rule usually applies that if a player is injury prone, they stay injury prone.

Tomi has missed 40 games in two and a half seasons. The premier league is the most physically demanding league in the world.

Obviously I think we persevere but if we are still here in 12 months time then it might be a good idea to move on from Tomi.

I remember RVP being massively injury prone, then suddenly he wasn’t… Unless one considers the brain injury that made his inner child take control.

Some are plagued all their careers. Some manage to find stability as their body matures.

Edu and Garlick are smooth with it. This is a very different club now.

UGooner

Yes, we need a club full of players wanting to and capable of being first choice. I never thought we could even get this close or get to it without spending a billion over like 3-4 seasons ala Man Cheaty/Shitty. But here we are, constantly improving the squad. And the only player we signed who the rich teams would all have bid for is Rice. Hope we can keep finding gems like Tomi. Nowadays, when we sign an unknown or not so highly rated player, the anticipation is big. Hope our signings can continue to show them!!

Tomi is to our backline what Godzilla is to Tokyo.

Onenil

You think he wrecks our backline?

Tankard Gooner

No..I meant he is super massive. But I can see where people would have a problem with my words.. Sigh, this is why I don’t do well in interviews.

Everything was great until Godzuki appeared. Same with bloody Scrappy doos appearance in Scooby doo!

Just a great bit of business ! Get in there Tomi chuffed for him & the club

Positive Pete

Rock on Tommy!

Comedian

He is indeed a Swiss army knife and so consistent, maybe the most underrated player in our squad. Saw him at CB against Germany a few months ago, damn he was so good. We might have lost the league last season when Saliba got injured but at the same period if we had Tomi available maybe we would have won it, shame injuries kept him out. We have such good bunch of defenders, Saliba , gabi, Tomi, white, kiwior, timber, that’s like an NBA squad for defence, such great presence in the back.

Bill Hall

Great news, he is a vital part of the defence because he can play anywhere across the back four with no loss of ability and that is unheard of.
