Gabriel Martinelli has been withdrawn from the Brazil squad for their upcoming matches with England and Spain.
In a twist of fate, the 22-year-old is replaced by Galeno, the winger whose goal separates Arsenal and Porto ahead of tonight’s Champions League last-16 second leg at the Emirates.
Martinelli will sit out this evening’s encounter while he recovers from a deep laceration to his foot which was suffered in last week’s 6-0 win over Sheffield United. He was seen on crutches at the weekend.
Novos convocados para a Seleção Brasileira! 🇧🇷
O treinador da Seleção Brasileira, Dorival Júnior, anunciou a convocação do goleiro Léo Jardim, do Vasco, do zagueiro Fabrício Bruno, do Flamengo, e do atacante Galeno, do Porto (POR).

Arsenal supporters will note that Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has also pulled out of the Selecao’s upcoming fixtures.
Ederson suffered a muscle injury conceding a penalty in Sunday’s 1-1 draw between City and Liverpool at Anfield and is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines.
It means he’ll definitely miss his side’s FA Cup quarter-final with Newcastle and is facing a race against time to be fit for the visit of Arsenal on 31 March.
Transfermarkt says Ederson has only missed 12 games during his seven seasons at the Etihad.
Hope Martinelli does get back for City (and Ederson doesn’t, we had issues with inuries last season which cost us dear so hope we get some balance this season). Good luck Gabriel!
Wasn’t the yellow card his fifth of season ?
Not sure but if it is, he would have missed the FA cup this weekend, I think. Also, doesn’t the 5 card rule get scrapped after the half way mark of the season?
not scrapped but reset. 5 yellows within 19 games = one game suspension; 10 yellows within 32 games = two games suspension
And yet you have muffins who thought Neli was faking. Get well my favorite plsyer
Jesus maybe the one to deputise for Martinelli tonight and Trossard may be employed more central to interchange with Havertz, this has worked in the past against park the bus sides. The Portuguese navy seals will be diving at even the slightest touch to con the ref and break up Arsenal’s rhythm. They will also park the bus when out of possession and foul at corners and set pieces. Arsenal will need to score early and set the pace of the game. I hope Arteta plays two false number 9s in both Trossard and Havertz interchanging in order to beat… Read more »
damn this intertwining of Martinelli and Galeno’s fates has the same vibe as Maupay injuring Leno. also that one meme where Bart sees his doppelganger skateboarding past the window. either way just a very spooky aura.
This international break is crucial. At this time last season, Pep prevented a whole bunch of his players from going for it, while we let ours go, to our detriment. Let’s see if we’ve learnt this time around.
Difficult to prevent Citeh from scamming and cheating at whatever they do
Good to see that we’ve finally nursed Jesus, Tomiyatsu & Party back to match fitness ….…
.….just in time for them to to jet off & get injured again.
I actually think Party should be allowed to go with Ghana and get match fit in time for City. I want him and Rice in that midfield for the Etihad showdown. Having watched Liv-City on Sunday, I think a Party-Rice midfield would elevate our chances of getting a result from that game
Started thinking about this a lot recently with Jorginho’s presence in the team and Partey’s return to full-fitness. If we’re in “game for your life” terroritory (and the etihad this month isn’t far off), then even with both at full fitness, my gut reaction is saying I want Jorginho starting. Big contrast to where I was at the start of the season where it was Rice/Partey/Odegaard all the way for me, and Partey’s long absence might be influencing my thoughts here. But there is just something about Jorginho for the big occasion that’s making it a much easier choice between… Read more »
I agree with the fact that Jorginho is very underrated, but I think you forgot how great Partey can be. He is Declan Rice-esque, with his ability to boss a midfield.

By the way, sorry to censor his name, but that’s the only my comments aren’t “awaiting for approval” for some reason.
I would not be surprised if Partey starts today. The only real threat Porto present us is pressing and on the counter. Those are Partey strength areas. I think Zinny plays today if fit too. This is EXACTLY his type of game and I think he could be a difference maker. Again, it’s not a slight at all on Kiwior – he’s been fantastic, but we need that extra control and ability to pick apart a the lines of defense we’ll face. We cannot forget how freaking good Zinny is at that and the added dynamism that brings to our… Read more »
Partey is rusty and has always had a perchant for giving the ball away cheaply in dangerous areas, I don’t want to see him at all tonight.
You’re taking the risk of having Partey injured, playing for Ghana.
Start Nketiah .
His close control could be of use and him starting will be a surprise element.
I think I’d rather have Stina Blackstenius up front.
Wow!
Or Niklas Bendtner…
Have you been smoking crystal meth shortly before typing this text.
Says the guy with bleeding gums…
Comment of the day winner!
Eddie – is that you…?
In a game such as tonight’s the thought of starting Nketiah is actually thinking outside the (18 yard) box. No goal expected.
And *my* comment was the one awaiting approval, blogs?!
If you spell Party’s surname correctly you will be checked and hence delayed.
We need a fox in the box today. Nketiah isn’t one but sometimes he is. He confuses me.
It’s not a cut IMHO
It is
Tis but a scratch
All I am hoping for is that the muppets at UEFA, being marginally less muppetish than the muppets at PiGMOLluscs – will have duly noted how that toothless ref was utterly manipulated in the first leg, and selected a more steely fellow (with two good eyes, preferably) for this match. If – and it’s not a cert, mind you – that does happen, we should spank them proper. Get an early goal – follow it up with a 2nd before h/t and they will collapse… there is all manner of shite going on with their board atm, which cannot be… Read more »
We need a strong ref tonight. Porto will start time wasting and faking injuries from the kick off. They will try to disturb our rhythm at every possible moment and we have to be patient and not fall for any traps.
I hope Gabi is OK, the foot is a horrible place to get cut, so many nerves, tendons and muscles with no protection. You could see how much pain he was in when he limped off the field. Fucking “blades” good riddance and back to the championship they go.
