Dutch international goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar has hinted that she would be interested in moving to Arsenal during the summer. The Telegraph’s Tom Garry broke the news of Arsenal’s interest back in March and Arseblog News also understands the club is interested in the Aston Villa goalkeeper.
Van Domselaar moved from Twente to Aston Villa last summer having already claimed the number 1 shirt for her country during Euro 2022. Arsenal have allowed the contracts of Kaylan Marckese and Sabrina D’Angelo to run down this summer in order to create space for another goalkeeper to challenge Manu Zinsberger, who signed a new contract over Christmas. Sabrina D’Angelo is likely to join Villa as reported by Emma Sanders at the BBC.
This week’s Arsenal Women newsletter is about Manu Zinsberger and why you should always view Arsenal’s GK situation as a private battle between two senior internationals. Manu has seen off another challenger in D’Angelo. The next challenge now awaits 🧤👇🏻https://t.co/GWuv4McjJH pic.twitter.com/BAhZNRvVDF

The player has been recovering from hip surgery but has been called into the Netherlands squad for a double header against Finland as they kick off Euro 2025 qualifying this week. When questioned by Dutch outlet NOS on a potential move, van Domselaar said, ‘Of course you see that happening. I take it as a compliment, but the past few weeks have been all about recovering and getting fit.
’It is something I hope to gain after a year of experience. That is why I chose Aston Villa, to gain minutes. I am happy that it went well and that the compliments are coming.’ On Wednesday, van Domselaar was also reasonably open with Dutch outlet
Sportnieuws about a move.
‘Do I fancy it? Of course, you want to win trophies. You want to play in the Champions League, compete for cups and the league. Ultimately, I would like to take such a step.’
Our understanding is that any deal is unlikely to take place before June 24, when the WSL transfer window officially opens and Emma Sanders from the BBC has reported the same. Meanwhile, we broke the news of Arsenal’s interest in Barcelona’s Mariona Caldentey on May 13, our understanding at that point was that positive talks had taken place about a deal. The player is out of contract at Barca this summer.
The Spanish press is now reporting that a move is likely to be sealed next week, once this international window has concluded. Mariona is currently with the Spain camp for their Euro 2025 qualifiers.
I would like both of these signings….
Very excited about Caldentey !!!
They say that Goalkeepers reach their best level around 30 years of age. If that is true then van Domselaar is young and has a way to go but she is a very good keeper. Not wanting to go on about this but she is so much more preferable and palatable than Mary Earps. Good move!
Agree (thought tbh the Earps thing is nowhere near as big as has been made out, the talk versus the actual level of tangible interest has been so out of whack. I believe it was one bid and that was it, no follow up). Van Domselaar has a really high ceiling but think Manu’s improvement means we could bed her in reasonably gradually but DvD would also be given plenty of minutes across the season and is a good enough GK for that to not be any sort of risk.
Didn’t realise Daniëlle van de Donk was good in goal too! Multi talent that we didn’t explore previously! 🙂 Should Daphne join us we need a different abbreviation for her, don’t you think? There can only be one DvD!
do announcements have to wait until after the window officially starts?
So we are looking at “DVD2 – the goalkeeper edition” ….. Had to say ig
👍
