Arsenal’s Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross have all been called into the 18-player Australia squad for the Olympic Games in Paris.
With Sam Kerr injured, Catley will captain her country at the games in France, where they are in a group with Germany, USA and Zambia.
Given all three players are regular starters, it’s not a surprise that all have been called into the squad, even given the 18 player size. However, Caitlin Foord hobbled out of their friendly win over China on Friday with a tight hamstring. But with the first game against Germany not until 25 July, it seems like that isn’t a significant injury.
Emily Fox (USA), Cloe Lacasse (Canada) and Laia Codina (Spain) are all likely to represent their countries at the games this summer too.
The injury to Foord is a worry, but congratulations to our Vegemighty trio.
Assist from Catley, Cloe Lacasse scored for Canada, too. I’m really looking forward to the Olympics. Best of luck to all our players.
Looking forward to the Olympics too – viewing times should be easier than Tokyo. I really liked watching Team GB in Tokyo, where our Kim Little was the stand out player for GB. Houghton was not fully fit, which let us down crucially in the QF exit.
But I guess we should be supporting Oz this time round!
Unfortunately the scheduling makes it difficult to watch a lot of the tournament. A lot of games are being played at the same time or overlapping. Olympic scheduling is very strange for the football tournament and even if you had nothing else on, watching more than about 50% of it is basically impossible unless you have a lot of screens and a lot of eyes!
