Match day two provided yet more drama at the Women’s Olympics football tournament in France, involving several Arsenal players. The most dramatic game involved three Gunners as Australia overturned a 5-2 deficit early in the second half to defeat Zambia 6-5.

Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross played the whole game and Matilda’s skipper Catley was in the thick of the action with two goals and two assists. Catley’s free-kick (which was badly fumbled by the Zambia keeper) brought the score back to 4-5 before Caitlin Foord was fouled in the area and Catley slotted the spot kick for the equaliser. Catley then played the through ball for the 90th minute Matildas winner.

Slightly less dramatic at the same time in Nantes was Spain’s 1-0 win over Nigeria thanks to a late Alexia Putellas free-kick. Mariona Caldentey played the entire game while Laia Codina was an unused substitute. Spain are confirmed in the quarter-finals.
In the later games, Emily Fox played until stoppage time for USA’s emphatic 4-1 win over Germany, which sees them through to the knockout rounds, while Cloe Lacasse was an unused sub for Canada’s dramatic late 2-1 win from behind over France.
Canada have been docked six points after it emerged they had allegedly been flying drones over New Zealand’s training sessions prior to matchday one. This result puts Canada on 0 points and still gives them a chance of qualification as they play Colombia in the final group game on Wednesday.
How many drones had Man City flown above our training ground, undetected, at a very high altitude with laser pointers and the help of a satellite? I love fictions.
Nonsense. All their scientific effort went into building a bionic holding midfielder.

Amazing fightback from Australia, Steph being exceptionally instrumental. I don’t normally rate Alanna Kennedy that highly but I thought that she dealt really well with Barbara Banda. It felt very satisfying to beat Zambia. I know it is not the only country that has men in what is supposed to be a women’s team, and that Fifa allow it (as do Australia, ironically!!, along with the FA and many others)…but it’s wrong. Women’s sports are for women. Caldentey has been great, but poor Laia hasn’t had any minutes so far. The Canada team is looking good, but I am so… Read more »
