Seven Arsenal players were in action on Match Day One of the Women’s Football Tournament at the Olympics. In the first two games of the day, two Gunners were on the score sheet for their countries too. Mariona Caldentey played the whole game and scored a smart 74th minute winner for Spain against Japan in Nantes. Laia Codina was an unused sub in that game. Spain play against Nigeria at 6pm in Nantes.

Meanwhile Cloe Lacasse scored a first half stoppage time equaliser for Canada in their 2-1 win over New Zealand in St. Etienne before being replaced in the 56th minute. However, Canada’s campaign continues to be mired in controversy. An analyst and the assistant coach were sent home prior to the game after they allegedly flew a drone over New Zealand’s training sessions on two occasions. Head Coach Bev Priestmann agreed to step back from coaching the game to preserve the integrity of the fixture. Priestmann has now also been suspended and sent home ahead of their second game against France on Sunday evening.

The Australian players had an uncomfortable afternoon as the Matildas were well beaten 3-0 by Germany in Marseilles. Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord, who had been carrying muscular strains, were spared after 77 minutes. Krya Cooney-Cross played the full 90. In the later game, Emily Fox played the full 90 minutes for the US as they defeated Zambia 3-0 in Nice. Australia have a crunch game against Zambia in Nice on Sunday at 6pm, while the US face Germany in Marseilles at 8pm.
