Gio to join Atletico Madrid from Arsenal Women

Arsenal’s Brazilian winger Gio is set to join Liga F club Atletico Madrid next season, Arseblog News understands. The attacker, who has just turned 21, signed for the club in the summer of 2022 from Barcelona.

She was immediately loaned to Everton where she endured an injury hit half a season, before the Gunners recalled her for the second half of the campaign due to injuries to Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema.

Gio was made available to loan for the 2023-24 season but a couple of potential loan agreements fell through and she remained at Arsenal for the first half of the campaign but was not registered for the squad, since the Gunners were at their 25-player squad cap.

She joined Madrid CFF for the second half of the season and had an excellent spell in the city where Gio spent her teenage years, having been born in São Paulo, moved to Floria aged four before moving to Madrid aged 11. Gio scored nine goals in 16 appearances, finishing as Madrid CFF’s top scorer despite only playing for half the season.

She was part of Atletico Madrid’s academy until moving to Barcelona. Gio has one year remaining on her Arsenal contract and we understand Arsenal should get a fee from Madrid, who recently said goodbye to Gio’s compatriot Ludmila.

A loss that might bite back someday in the future. A two year investment that felt doomed early on. It seems just buying ready made players is a better fit for Club/Jonas. I don’t know his knowledge of developing players. The shorter contracts on the women side make it less of a worry apparently but an aging profile of player on both the left and right side of the team needs dealing with. Next season I would presume Lacasse and Hurtig move on (end of contracts), 12 more months of high pressing in Mead/Foord legs and your wondering whether the… Read more »

Jonas doesn’t seem interested in developing players not named frida.

TTIreland

Pelova, Cooney-Cross, Kuhl, Goldie, Agyemang, Godfrey, Reid. I’d also note that Lotte has come on a mile under Jonas. None of these ladies are named Frida unless I’m missing something?

Kerenska

OK, you are right. I got too excited about liking something mean about Jonas (apparently I’m still bearing a viv shaped grudge). But u are right about pelova and lotte, but I think the youngsters have mainly improved from playing time at watford.

Strange decision, Gio appeared to show potential. Maybe she was feeling homesick and we did nothing to make her feel welcome. Unfortunately, Jonas is full of strange decisions and they are not always positive. He had better win the WSL this coming season otherwise he’ll be giving the club a decision to make. With Chelsea under new management, Utd transitioning, and we can beat City it is now or never!

Jason

Man City for me are favourites next season, defensively solid, just short on goals but they seem to have solved that puzzle with Miedema’s signing

Kerenska

Big shame Pelova won’t be part of it.

Kerenska

From what she said, she felt like arsenal messed her about. Fair re registration/loan debacle. And Jonas doesn’t seem able/willing to let her have a run with us, so best for player and team.

Michael

I think she has more than enough quality to have been treated at least 50% better. I think she deserved better at the hands of Arsenal Women.

Peter Story Teller

Most definitely!
