Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Vivianne Miedema. The Dutch forward left the Gunners this summer after seven successful years after a mutual decision not to extend the player’s contract.
Miedema broke the WSL goal scoring record in an Arsenal shirt and won a WSL title and three Conti Cups. An ACL injury in December 2022 complicated the latter stages of her Gunners tenure and player and club decided they had grown apart and her contract was not extended.
Our information was always that Manchester City were the front runners for her signature but the player took time to think about her next move during her holidays in June before opting to join WSL rivals City, where she will likely play as a number 10 behind striker Bunny Shaw.
Miedema gave an interesting interview to former USWNT star Sam Mewis this week, where she touched on her Arsenal departure.
Bad news, losing our best player to a rival. Reminds me of RVP leaving.
RvP was in his prime though. She is on the other side.
She is 27 years old ffs.
Think Man City expects to get Beth Mead too.
you can bet on it.
Will come back to haunt us…
Relax, just think Alexis Sanchez.
I’m not saying you are wrong, but I’d be interested how you determine that she was our best player last season? I couldn’t, because I’ve never seen her in training and hardly ever in games. (Because she almost never played, I actually did see the games.) So that for me leaves only 3 possible conclusions: 1) You are wrong and she is not our best player. 2) Jonas is unable to recognise who our best player is / best players are and therefore did not select our best player(s) for games. 3) Jonas also knows that she is our best… Read more »
It’s impossible to assess Miedema with Arsenal since Eidevall arrived. Why? Because he took a career CF—and not just a CF but easily one of the best in the game and arguably the best finisher in the game, decided he didn’t like the way she played the position (didn’t fit his style), and so opted to make her a midfielder. Soon after that head-spinning decision she blew out her knee and so hasn’t really played much for a year and a half. She is finally healthy and back at CF for the Dutch and scored the equalizing goal in The… Read more »
This upsets me. A lot.
What I said as soon as I came across her post on Twitter. Sad.
In the interview she said she was close to moving to another club in winter. Which club would this have been and what kind of transfer fee I wonder.
Nice to see ragebait posts aren’t just for Twitter anymore.
You’re here right? Commenting? Interacting with people?
Unsurprisingly Arseblog news covers news, what are you expecting and who do we think is the idiot here?
Shes not an arsenal player anymore, don’t clinching between gooners, guys move on.
Who’s angry here? Certainly not the one slinging insults.
It’s official, I’m reminded of a certain Captain Edmund Blackadder who once said after his own worst fears were confirmed “I think the phrase rhymes with clucking bell”
I thought you were going to go with Captain Darling’s diary entry on his way to the front line.
I see she’s going to wear number 6. I remember the days when players always wore numbers 2 to 11 (goalkeeper didn’t have a number) and you had to buy a programme to know who was who!
Nah! Under Bertie Mee we only had a squad of 12 and it was the same starting 11 every game! Wilson, Rice, McNab……………..and the Stroller!
It is interesting to know how she will fit into the City team. They will most often play a front three of Kelly, Shaw and Hemp. Watching them last year against Arsenal, I thought Hasegawa ran the midfield. That leaves Viv competing with Roord, Fowler, Park and Coombs (plus Blinkinde Brown and Pritchard) for two places. The rotation will need careful management.
Viv’s time at Arsenal had run but I’m wondering if she is the one making a mistake going to City. Look who Brighton are signing up, for example, or even further outside the box the Lionesses in the 2nd tier.
I don’t think Viv is making a mistake going to City, Peter. She’s a very careful person and seems to have considered this move thoughtfully. Unfortunately for us, I feel there’s a high chance she will return to her best fairly soon & excel for Man City next season.
I’m not so sure, Meado, Leah, Laura all hit the ground pretty much running after their rehab but Viv seems to have had issues and additional “corrective” surgery whatever that may have been. Of course, as we have already discussed, unless City are willing to change their system to accommodate Viv as we did when she first arrived which is how Beth ended up being a winger instead of the real no.9 that she is deep down there might be limited match time for her there also.
Let’s see – time will of course tell………
Yeah! I might have to eat humble pie at the end of the season when she’s knocked 30 in for City! 🙂
I thought Kelly was going to psg, but maybe I made that up…have a brain injury, so every day has a surprise😂
I wonder about this too as ManCity is already loaded with attacking talent. If she plays the 10, where is Roord going to play when she is healthy again? City spent heavily to sign Roord, who was having an excellent season before blowing out her knee. Park took the spot and played very well herself. That’s a lot of Ten talent–and of course there is Shaw at CF—which is Miedema’s best position. City will need to play with more than 1 ball!
It’s going to be a very competitive WSL, but I noticed that Chelsea are making some great signings, I don’t know if Arsenal will do well this season.
