Arsenal 1-1 Brighton – player ratings

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton this afternoon, playing most of the second half with ten men after Declan Rice was sent off.

Kai Havertz put the Gunners ahead late in the first half after great work from Bukayo Saka, but a harsh second yellow for Rice put us on the back foot – and Joao Pedro equalised for the visitors.

Here’s how the players rated this afternoon.

Fuck that ref

Henkamp

I am exhausted. Numb to all the bullsh*t I see from refs season after season. If the FA is a serious body, they’d tear down this rotten PGMOL group and start from scratch. Or fvcking get in some refs from abroad! How can these idiots keep fvcking us up over and over again? They let Saka get kicked all over the pack without any consequences. But as soon as one of our players breathes close to an opponent, the cards are out! It is doing my head in. City, United, and Liverpool never get these kinds of harsh calls. It’s… Read more »

BillyKrystal

It’s infuriating, there will be some chat about this, with the usual idiots defending the refs, everyone will move on and the pgmol will be left to continue poisoning the league. Are they a crime organization who are blackmailing everyone? How the fuck can they operate with no accountability aside from the futile pleas of fans and pundits? Tear the shit down and start fresh it’s the only way to stop the rot.

Henkamp

Exactly. Rio Ferdinand, one of the detestable ex-United players, is asking why Mikel ARTETA is outside his technical area. Really?

I think the TV people and ex-refs all work hand in hand with these clown referees. No accountability, supreme protection, etc. Expect them to keep screwing us over without any consequences.

BillyKrystal

I couldn’t believe the technical area comments, has anyone in history except the biggest snitches and tattle tales actually cared about staying in technical area? It’s a convenient distraction from flat out fraud. New season same as the old season. If there were any accountability Kavanaughs performance would be under review, the glaring inconsistencies would mean he’s demoted or at least reassigned. Instead they will circle the wagons, Howard Webb will say some mealy mouthed nonsense, the celebrity ref pundits will try to muddy the conversation, and the broad and unwarranted Arsenal hate will ensure nothing changes. We can’t make… Read more »

Crash Fistfight

To be fair, we couldn’t make it past match day 1. Jesus got a yellow card for getting molested and the same Wolves player didn’t get a red card for choking Havertz. It’s just that we won, so that doesn’t count as sour grapes in the pundits’ eyes.

Daveo

Of course they do, who pays the biggest advertising bills to the media? Fossil fuel corporations of course, who is the biggest supplier of oil to the UK? You know you know

Bobbert

Every manager behaves like arteta (excepting the toad at mate fc who is too large) and he’s the only one mentioned. Lopetegui and emery flail around like madmen for 90 minutes and are ignored

Emi Rates

Someone should ask Ferdinand how he managed to miss that drugs test which eventually earned him an 8 month ban. The cheating doped up Man U turn coat fuck.

Garynevillesnoseisoffside

Amen to that brother. He’s a sad human

OnlyBeingHonest

Forget an itch, I hope he flips his car into a ditch and goes up in flames on his drive home!!

Bobbert

Spare some sympathy for the road workers, let’s just hope his car won’t start and he has to walk home. In the rain.

OnlyBeingHonest

And lightening, while carrying his golf clubs…

Daveo

He’s from Manchester, they’d just be fans of one of those scum cheating teams, don’t feel sorry.

Bobbert

Well one of those teams has fans, but they all live in london. Other team doesn’t have fans. They have paid support

Deano

Bit over the top, but gave you a thumbs up anyway.

OnlyBeingHonest

Appreciate it, fuming, probably is over the top but right now I’m feeling hateful

Der32

Fitting end for a proper cunt.

Daveo

Honestly, I don’t even care about the ratings… This is a corrupt, broken game. I just want to watch Arsenal play footie in a fair game… FUCK YOU FA and PMGOL

Henkamp

And now we have Rice missing the NLD. It’s not a decision that affects just one game!

How rotten is our luck with this Merino injury by the way? Partey clearly doesn’t have the legs anymore. Pairing him and Jorginho at the base of midfield in such a high tempo game doesn’t sound appetising at all.

Mark

Hopefully Jesus will be able to play in the NLD as Havertz is likely going to have to drop into midfield with Rice out and either Jorginho or Partey at the def mid position again (where we might get overrun). It is going to be such a tight title race that dropping two points at home like that to that level of BS really sucks.

Henkamp

And now we have Rice missing the NLD. It’s not a decision that affects just one game!

How rotten is our luck with this Merino injury by the way? Part-ey clearly doesn’t have the legs anymore. Pairing him and Jorginho at the base of midfield in such a high tempo game doesn’t sound appetising at all.

TranT

This, this and only this! Exactly what I feel right now. If I wasn’t such a big Arsenal fan, I’d refrain from watching this league at all. It seems either heavily influenced or is run extremely incompetently, so it is indeed either corrupt or broken. However, this is not to say that we wouldn’t have conceded that same goal with 11 men or that we didn’t have any very good chances to score anymore. I also have nothing against a second yellow for Rice for kicking the ball away with his toe for timewasting. He did kick it away about… Read more »

Cool Papa Bellerin

My feelings exactly. This team is such a joy to watch, we look forward to it all week long, and instead we get a ref show.

Rothi

Big time wanker this ref

Bobbert

Mr bean referees from the north, must have a colony of those inbred fools up there that funnel right into Webbs little feifdom

karl g

You won’t see this sending off again this season.

Dizzle

This is the one. David Luiz ghost penalty, Martinelli double yellow, the foul throw-ins of the past, etc. Arsenal get punished and become the end block for these decisions time and again.

Dirty Schues

Literally told my buddy this after the card issuance. That’s egregious by the referee.

Jat Pennings

Greater Manchester ref strikes again

Savage

Given that we can expect bad decisions by default, this was a game for:

A) scoring a second goal and having more attacking fluency
B) keeping a clean sheet

We’re still struggling with our final balls this season.

Bleeding Gums Murphy

Sake and odegarrd both had chances to make it two. Needed to just hit in instead of side foot. Rice has cost us big time. Defender played him and the ref.

Red Cannon

Rice didn’t need to kick the ball away. It was a dumb move. He knew exactly what he was doing because he was looking down at the ball as he did it, after glancing over his shoulder to see the Bournemouth player moving to kick the ball. It led to an obvious card.

George

Exactly. Rice is the one at fault here. You can’t give the ref that reason, excuse whatever you want to call it. No need to deliberately toe poke it, none.

Edzo

In the first half Pedro kicked the ball halfway down the pitch and didn’t get a yellow. Rice made a mistake. Lapse in judgment. But the ref gives it all the time or doesn’t. Can’t be selective. Also, it was a full kick to rice’s leg. That’s dangerous play. He didn’t kick and miss the ball because it moved.

Up4GrabsNow!

Here’s an idea, don’t give the ref an excuse to send you off.

Bobbert

Another idea: competency tests for referees

Jeremy

I guess we should stop making tackles then. Or competing in any way…because who knows what a sending off offence is anymore if you’re an arsenal player. 🤦‍♂️

George

False equivalency though, isn’t it.

Brian

The bastard from Brighton gave the ref an excuse for a card, but the corrupt officials let it go. So fuck off!

Crash Fistfight

What’s with people giving such low ratings to Martinelli and Zinchenko? They weren’t in the game long enough to do anything good or bad either way.

Do people vote before or after looking at what Blogs has given? I swear I must watch a different game to others if not.

Crash Fistfight

The question had nothing to do with the first point, by the way.

Chris

Every year, the same thing, just in new ways.

Redbaron

Rice + Partey midfield just doesnt seem to be working. Maybe time to try “model professional” Jorgi

John C

Partey was dreadful, his loose play and pass led to Rice’s first yellow and he stopped running for the equaliser. He really needs to be fazed out of the team as soon as possible, he’s becoming a liability

Houston Gooner

On Rice: the first yellow was a clear yellow, sure. I was even worried they might have given him a straight red for it (which would have been the wrong decision, just a fear I had). But that second one is absolute shit. I don’t give a fuck about the “letter of the law” when A. It’s a dumbass reason for a yellow, especially one that leads to a sending off, and B. The inconsistency is so apparent. All that said, he wasn’t great today and really hasn’t been so far this season. Hate to see him suspended, but maybe… Read more »

Bobbert

The rules are there as guidelines, per Howard Webb and his little TV shoe last year. Refs want to be the aggressor but also the victim, just like cops

Dimma

He slightly kicked the ball away, which if you follow the rule is a yellow. A very harsh yellow and in my opinion shouldnt of been. But where was the yellow for their player who kicked it away when he ran it out in the first half? Consistency is key for refereeing and that didnt happen today (again).

Anthony

Does Veltman not play the ball as he stands up, into Declan’s path. So, isn’t the ball in play at that point?

In which case, Declan has put the ball out, for a throw in, and Veltman should be shown a red card for kicking Declan.

Interesting that I’ve not seen this mentioned in any analysis. 🤔

Royalknightmu

This game shows where we can still improve.
The ability to play with setbacks and building play with 10/ being confident with the ball(which will happen often with that level of refereeing)
We still managed to have 2 great chances. Just need to calm down.
Gabriel is the weak link in defence now that zinky is out. He didnt exude confidence once we were down to 10.
Havertz needs to be rested as much as possible with the amount of effort he gives each game.

Shivam

I agree, we are chasing a robotic City team. We need to take everything possible. Even after the shambolic 2nd yellow to Rice, there were 2 great opportunities for us (as a matter of fact, we kinda had the better opportunities even with 10 men) which if we had taken we would have won. They were difficult chances, and the players did so well to create them, but I guess that’s the additional mile the team needs to go to win against City.
With the standard of referees we may very well be down to ten quite often!

ObiKing

Saka could’ve wrapped up the game in the first half. Too wasteful.

Collibosher

Bonus Rating: 10/10 — for Blogs’ curse on Chris Kavanagh.

Yiannis

We worry that injuries, complacency, loss of confidence may ruin our season. Bullshit! It’s the referees that will do it 😠

CLE

Joao Pedro can blast the ball halfway across the field to waste time and stop a quick throw in in the first half without a card but somehow Rice gets kicked and gets the card. Baffling

Shivam

The referring is awful and inconsistent. But the performances need to improve too. The first half 11v11 was not very good even though Brighton themselves were not playing well. Odegaard missed a great chance and our overall performance was not up to the mark. Needed a mistake to score. After the 2nd yellow, the 1st 10 minutes were very shaky I felt, there after we played so very well without taking two great chances.
Hope City drop points today.

portugunner

0/10 to kavanagh for faling to win the game for brighton

Bobbert

He was effectively marking our players in the second half, something I’ve been complaining about him for 2 seasons now- the guy doesn’t know where to stand because he’ll get beaten for pace like Phil dowd.

Vonnie

Trossard really doesn’t need to start. Every time he does he’s anonymous. Keep him as a super sub and he does the business.

El Mintero

Think you might be right there…

Mark

Happy days,
Rice knew what he was doing, free kick was given, no reason to touch the ball again after that,
Your luck run out today,
Last week it was only more luck that villa were not 2 goals up,
😆😆 As usual your whining and complaining makes everyone else happy.
And let’s hope city win the 5th in a row
Cheers 🍻

Yorkshire Gooner

Are you lost Mark?

truj

PiGMOL for me. Sorry cochons!

Arsenalnut

So: 1) the Brighton player retstarted play by moving the ball 2 yards forward, throwing it into the retreating Rice’s legs. Ref should have only allowed play to restart until the ball was properly placed. 2) When Veltman pretended to kick the ball and got Rice instead the ball was still moving. Once again the ball needed to be stopped and then kicked.

Even if you believe the narrative that Rice kicked the ball away, and I do not, there is the issue of consistency. Joao Pedro’s 40 yard boot?

Kavanaugh is a tool.

Richard

Let’s just give Man City the title they’ve bought again this year. They can fuck off to the Bahamas and come back to play the CL and the rest of the league could have a nice clean competition instead.

El Mintero

Enough whining about shit refs. Yes, the red card was very harsh but could have been completely avoided. That’s on Rice. Instead, Arsenal not good enough for the win. The midfield was nowhere. Rice is struggling right now for some reason. He had a poor euros and has continued the lack of form into the new season. Partey was invisible man. Odegaard at half speed after the injury. Up front we are again quite wasteful. And the defence was very loose today I thought. Blogs ratings for our defenders is very generous – thought all 4 were “off” today. Not… Read more »

Matt P

Totally agree. Excuses, excuses, excuses. We were very disjointed today

Cool Papa Bellerin

Welbeck tried to block a Raya punt in the first half and then he was waving his hand asking for a yellow during the Rice incident. If you’re gonna call everything by the letter of the law then that’s a sending off too. Could probably go back and find 20 more incidents in every game that “should” be yellows. The reason they’re not is because people want to watch football, not a ref show.

1979gooner

The refereeing is beyond suspicious. Kavanagh couldn’t see things adequately to make the second yellow call. Arsenalnut is 100%spot on – Rice didn’t kick the ball away “So: 1) the Brighton player retstarted play by moving the ball 2 yards forward, throwing it into the retreating Rice’s legs. Ref should have only allowed play to restart until the ball was properly placed. 2) When Veltman pretended to kick the ball and got Rice instead the ball was still moving. Once again the ball needed to be stopped and then kicked.” Key is that Veltman kicked ball forward from where ‘foul’… Read more »

Arsenalnut

What I find surprising (and maddening) is that not one “expert” or commentator mentioning either ball movement issue or the fact that Rice was, in fact, clearing the area, or that Veltman threw the ball into his legs. Can no one see? Or are they so heavily socialized that no matter how crazy the ref’s call their job is to figure out how it could be correct. It feels like not believing their lying eyes. I’m also disappointed that so many of the Arseblog “brethren”, who should know the laws of the game agree with the referee.

Stevec

Ref was a disgrace! I was really doubtful about a consirancy against Arsenal but not after today! Time for a change.

Edzo

The ref isn’t on the take. Maybe he’s biased. Maybe he doesn’t like Rice. He’s just bad. Made awful decisions throughout. At least a card for the karate chop on rice. And selective yellows show he doesn’t understand the game. Probably doesn’t even remember the first half. This is why refs need to sit in front of the press. The press could ask him why he gives one touch a yellow but not a kick away of the ball. Then they become accountable.

Matt P

Not quite at the races today.
I know they are oros and are supposed to be emotionless machines, but who knows what if any impact the departure of such a well loved guy like Ramsdale might have had

Matt P

‘Pros’

Samgunz

I actually thought, bar a few dodgy passes, Partey was very good today on and off the ball, many players gave the ball away as he did, but he was key in winning the ball back and was really good when we went down to 10 men, nice to see him coming back into his own.

Zet

When Trossard is given the start, he failed to deliver. We need Martinelli to start against teams that are physical.

Paul

Injury crisis on the horizen Odegaard potentionaly injured , Merino down, rice suspended Parteys fitness is a problem he doesnt seem to be up to scratch yet, Ethans gonna have to hold the fort against tottenham away!
