Arsenal right-back Emily Fox is an Olympic gold medalist after the US defeated Brazil 1-0 in today’s Gold medal match thanks to a second half goal from Mal Swanson.
Fox has been a mainstay for the US at right-back, starting every game and being among the US’ best performers in the tournament. It’s the fifth time USA have won the gold for women’s football. Congratulations to Emily.

In yesterday’s bronze medal match, Laia Codina and Mariona Caldentey’s Spain were edged out for the bronze, going down 1-0 to Germany. Former Gunner Rafaelle was among the silver medalists for Brazil, who saw their legendary captain Marta bow out of international football with her third Olympic silver medal.
Congrats, Fox ❤️👊🏾
Well done Foxy, Caldentey and Codina. I am relieved none of them appear to have been injured. I hope they can now get some proper rest.
We have an Olympic Gold Medalist being the best Full Back in the WSL!
She was very good in the gold medal match. Almost no rotation for the US women in the Olympics, an extraordinarily–and probably dangerously–compressed tournament, which made Fox’s performance even more impressive.
I noticed in the highlights, Emily made one crucial goal saving defensive header in the 1st half, which Bronze definitely would not have made.
I thought Fox was superb in a match where Brazil made a lot of good US defenders look bad. Can’t wait to see her back in Arsenal colors.
