According to The Athletic, Arsenal want to sign Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle to fill one of two backup roles behind David Raya.
Having allowed Karl Hein to leave on loan for Real Valladolid and with Aaron Ramsdale anxious to depart, the Gunners have identified the England under-21 international as a homegrown option after having two offers for Wolves’ Dan Bentley rejected.
Mikel Arteta is also hoping to do a deal for Espanyol keeper Juan Garcia although it’s said the Spanish side is ready to play hardball over the player’s €25 million release clause.
Arsenal have already signed three goalkeepers this summer, confirming a pre-agreed £27 million deal for David Raya and recruiting teenagers Tommy Setford and Lucas Nygaard.
Persuading Tickle might be easier said than done. The 22-year-old played 52 games for the Latics last season and would have to swap guaranteed game time in League One for life on the bench at the Emirates.
Arsenal’s needs and the clock ticking on the transfer window also put Wigan in a strong negotiating position over a fee.
We’ve already lined up a nickname ‘The Tentickle’, so get it done, Edu.
Given Arteta’s refusal to play Ramsdale – who is pretty much a world class goalkeeper – at all last season, I do find it odd that we would spend £20m on a backup.
I know it would be a gamble but I’d sooner see that money distributed elsewhere and we risk it with a cheap no 2 this season.
Agree. Our CBs are very solid, so I am less weary about who stands in front of the sticks.
I mean, I believe Ramsdale is a really good goalie (it should now be clear to all why Raya has usurped him), but he’s not “world-class”. That is reserved for maybe the top 5-10 players in each position…in the world.
It’s kinda like how everybody is a now a GOAT.
Saying that I hope he finds a good opportunity to play and prove himself. It has been a rough year for Rammers, but he is still a very good player (he’s just not world-class).
Maybe there was a little hyperbole to drive my point home…!
But I can easily think of ten saves that Rambo made that only 5 or 10 goalkeepers in the world could make.
Unfortunately for Rammers, there is more to being an elite goalie than just making a few worldie saves here and there; prevention is always better than cure.
To be fair to Rambo, that pigeon was fucking interesting.
Pedantic but isn’t Rambo Aaron Ramsey and Rammers Aaron Ramsdale?
“I’ve got Rammers and Rambo. Trips [Kieran Tripper] thought it was a good idea to call me Boris in the Euros. That hasn’t caught on.“
From the rams mouth 🙂
Unfortunately Ramsdale seemed so overcome by the emotion of it being his chance to impress every game last season that he played poorly both games vs Brentford, so hard to make a case that he deserved to start any others
while you’re right, a lot of money and expectations are being put into this season. if ramsdale leaves, it only takes raya hitting the coffee table a little bit too hard with his toe for our whole season to be thrown into the bin, along with the 300M we spent over the last two years to be competitive. if you’re driving a lambo you can’t go cheap on a spare tire, or something like that. do lambos have a spare tire? i don’t even have a car, so i don’t know what i’m talking about
Garcia seems vastly overpriced for a No.2 but the Wigan keeper seems a common sense target.
Karl Hein looked pretty handy vs Real Madrid the other day, not sure if he has a future at Arsenal but his value looks likely to go on an upward curve with regular minutes.
Karl Hein played Real Madrid?!
I missed that!
What happened? Did he do ok then?
Crushed it. Basically, Real Madrid want to sign him now…
And to think, he could’ve been playing Bolton at home in league one last weekend if he’d chosen Charlton Athletic.
I bet he feels bloody silly now.
Real Madrid 3-1. Hein was good, but should have kept one out that got by him.
I believe his sister, Tess, plays football.
That’s balls!
Delightful.
Arsenal have a backup keeper – it might be harsh, but club first, player’s feelings second. Why waste another £20m+ to fill a position already covered? (time Arteta gave Ramsdale minutes).
Doubt Ramsdale will want to stick around to play the odd cup match & I’ve got no clue why Arteta (or any manager) would want to give him more minutes if the no 1 is fit & playing well.
A move seems the best option .
Ramsdale is not a backup GK. Not on 120k per week he’s not.
Where Sebestian Frey when you need him
Get Szcz back on a years contract
Unfortunately I think his decision is final and he won’t Acquiesce on it.
Despite all the cigarettes (and alcohol) “I don’t look back in anger”, I heard him say.
But you’re right. Some might say that you just have to roll with it. Do you know what I mean?
You need to stop crying your heart out otherwise you just might slide away. And that surely isn’t the masterplan.
If he came back, he could live forever as an arsenal rock and roll star.
Where were you with the puns on the Szczesny retiring article?
Oh no. I missed that!
I must’ve been half the world away.
Comment of the day. That’s enough internet for me now. Thank you.
It is my understanding that Mr Tickle has very long arms, so he should be a good shot-stopper.
Me too movement put an end to Mr. Tickle.
Laughable
I don’t know if I can describe it accurately, but the idea of signing this guy really does something to my fancy.
Will not be thrilled if we loan out Ramsdale just to go spend another 20M+ on a backup keeper… doesn’t seem to be the best use of resources
Arsenal fans are gonna have a tough day whenever Tickle has a howler. That alone is cause for concern. That Sp*rs muppet Expressions has his dictionary out and rubbing his hands in glee waiting for this deal to get done.
Just keep Ramsdale. He signed a juicy contract, there’s no rush. And keepers get injured more often than feel they should. A decent quality back up is essential. Why make ourselves weaker?
Can he invert?
You don’t fool me. Sam Tickle was a 1920s music hall entertainer famous for his catchphrase “Did YOU bruise my banana, Mrs?”
Keylor Navas is without a club and free. Go for him!
