Shrewsbury sign Sagoe Jr on loan after winger pens new Arsenal deal

Arsenal youngster Charles Sagoe Jr has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan for the season after signing a new contract at the Emirates.

The 20-year-old winger heads to Crowd Meadow to gain more experience of senior football having been courted by manager Paul Hurst for some time.

He came to prominence last season when he made his Gunners debut in the Carabao Cup 3rd round and then spent six months on loan in the Championship with Swansea for whom he played twice.

After signing Sagoe Jr, Hurst told Shrewsbury’s official website: “I’m really pleased to get Charles Sagoe Junior on board because I think we have been lacking options in that wide area. He is a player that we have been after for some time – we were interested in him during the January window.

“And this summer he went away on tour with Arsenal so we’ve had to be patient to get him.

“I think the fact we have been interested in him for some time has helped our case in getting the deal over the line. Now we need to get him up to speed because his pre-season has been a little bit different due to him going away with Arsenal.

“He has had some game time but not loads – I think he has acknowledged that himself.

“But we will do all we can to get him up to speed as quickly as possible – whether that is off the bench or whether that is starting games and seeing how long he can go for. We are delighted to get him in.”

Charles is the second academy youngster to head out on loan this summer after Jack Henry-Francis joined Sligo Rovers in a deal that lasts until November. We expect there will be a few more youngsters heading out in the next couple of weeks.

Love how excited the manager seems to be about getting him – hopefully he should be in line for some very decent minutes!

Did the youth teams go on tour too or when did charles go on tour with the 1st team 😅

He will be joining a couple of highly rated academy players on loan from Villa, so will be in good company. Paul Hurst is a decent manager and usually gets the best out of his teams. Shrewsbury have also just widened their pitch so he should get plenty of opportunity to show what he can do on the wing.

When did it become Crowd Meadow?

Bobbert

After everyone moved in, they couldn’t call it sparse meadow anymore

It is actually ‘Croud Meadow’. Croud are a digital marketing agency who became the new sponsors a year ago

Seems as if it’s a new stadium altogether, originally called New Meadow. Croud Meadow is for sponsorship reasons.
