I am sitting at Washington Dulles with some time on my hands before I can check my luggage, so here are some conclusions from the tour in DC (I will be at Southampton on Saturday covering the final pre-season friendly too).
Suffering was part of the plan
The conditions in DC were very hot and humid for both games. I was still in London for the Washington Spirit game but I can tell you that by the time kickoff rolled around for Arsenal v Chelsea, the sun was brutal. In the press box I elected to stand simply because I didn’t want the sweat to pool too much on my body and I was just stationary.
The conditions were not a surprise, DC is always oppressively hot in August. I spoke to Jonas one-on-one twice and sat in two of his press conferences and on every occasion, he referenced the need for a fast start to the season. Arsenal start early with Champions League qualifiers and there is an excellent chance they are going to have to play Atletico Madrid just to go to the playoff round.
They open the WSL season against Manchester City and play Chelsea on match day four. Arsenal cannot win anything in the opening month of the season but they could lose everything. They have to be in peak form from the get go and playing two tough opponents in difficult conditions was in service of that aim.
Arsenal are also working on a slightly more patient model of playing out from the back. I asked Jonas Eidevall about this after the Chelsea game and he confirmed what I saw, a slower, more provocative style of playing out to tempt the opponent onto them.
‘Yes it is fair to say we have been doing that and working on that. I think we were quite good on that last Spring as well and it has been part of the team’s development. We have looked quite solid with that at times in pre-season but there are also times that we move the ball quite well. We still lack a bit of clarity on when to change the point of the attack and to recognise where the free player is.
‘We lacked consistency in giving those passes and making those decisions, sometimes we did it really well and sometimes we took the wrong decisions and we need to learn from that.’ My suspicion at the moment is that Arsenal might see this as an option to try to snake charm low defensive blocks away from their penalty areas. It was hit and miss in the two games in DC but that is what pre-season is for, to try new things in a consequence free environment. Arsenal wanted an uncomfortable pre-season and they got one.
There are (broadly) two markets in the US for Arsenal Women to woo
Again, please appreciate how broadly I am speaking here, but having spent a week in DC, some of it around the women’s team and then a day watching the men’s team in Franklin Hall on Saturday, it strikes me that the US market is split into two factions where Arsenal Women are concerned.
Clearly, there is an enormous amount of support for Arsenal Men in the US. I remain so taken aback on my two visits now by the passion and the sheer number of people who organise their lives around Arsenal out here. Clearly when the men’s team come here, they arrive with a product that is far in advance of the domestic soccer product. That isn’t the case with the women’s team.
The US is, it is fair to say, the spiritual home of women’s soccer. So there is a big women’s soccer market independent of Arsenal. The NWSL gets good crowds, the USWNT has a lot of interest and the availability of Arsenal Women games to broadcast since 2019 (the FA Player remains undefeated as the WSL’s most significant innovation) has built an Arsenal Women specific audience here.
Tobin Heath’s arrival in 2021 drove a huge amount of interest towards Arsenal and right-back Emily Fox is from Ashburn in Virgina, just a short drive from DC. This is a market that does not need to be convinced to watch women’s soccer. Instead, the challenge is probably to provide a superior product to the one that is already here.
The advantage for Arsenal Women is that they can play a local team like Washington Spirit and expect a very tough opponent in the way that the men’s team would not experience if they played an MLS team. But it is also probably a market where the women’s team needs to work a little harder.
The other ‘market’ of course, is for people who support the men’s team and have been wooed by the expansion of the Premier League and getting them to take an interest in Arsenal Women too. Again, there is little to no cynicism, for want of a better word, for fans Stateside who have been exposed to women’s soccer and will know exactly who Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan are.
I watched the Washington Spirit v KC Current NWSL match- the first game of the double header ahead of Arsenal v Chelsea at Audi Field. The Current goal was scored by Temwa Chawinga, who Arsenal wanted to sign in the summer of 2022 and set up by Debinha, who Arsenal came close to signing in January 2023. An MLS game would be unlikely to offer up a similar triviality with Arsenal Men! It is an interesting and, arguably, more divergent marketing challenge for the women’s team here than it is the men’s.
And for those who don’t know, some of us had the privilege of watching the likes of Kelly Smith, Rachel Yankey & Alex Scott in the US growing up in the 2000s & Kim a decade later, so it’s been nice to have those club connections continued/ updated over here etc as time goes on🙂

Mariona is a wide forward
Earlier in the summer I speculated that Mariona might play more centrally for Arsenal in the number 10 position. Nobody has entirely nailed that spot since Eidevall was appointed save for Frida Maanum’s good run of form in 2022-23. Mariona’s signing coincided pretty neatly with Vivianne Miedema’s departure too.
To be clear, Mariona’s position was always speculation on my part, it was never sourced information. But I was very much told that Arsenal wanted to introduce a little more trickery and guile into the attack as well as some youth. That has arrived in the shape of Rosa Kafaji, but as a central player, not as a young wide player as I thought.
The TL;DR is that Arsenal added the two profiles I expected them to, but I thought Mariona might play as a 10 and that Arsenal would then buy a young, tricky winger. Instead, Mariona is going to be considered more of a left-sided wide forward and Kafaji will play centrally.
I asked Kafaji about her position at Arsenal following the Chelsea game. ‘I think I was brought here especially for the 10 position…I am a player that takes risks but the reward is high too.’ And I asked Jonas Eidevall about Mariona’s primary position too.
‘When I have seen Mariona at her best in the national team and for Barcelona has been coming off the left and having that freedom to move between the lines and find the pocket. I know last season she played quite a bit in the 9 position and she can manage those positions, which is good, but the main idea is that she plays as a wide forward and having that freedom and flexibility within our structure to move around from there.’
I wrote a few weeks ago about why these are such interesting moves given that both of these players, in different ways, break free from structure. Mariona drifts into spaces without the ball and looks to make connections. Kafaji is a player who will frustrate on occasion losing the ball, but she takes risks and tries penetrative (difficult) passes and actions.
Arsenal can certainly do with this type of player and it is no surprise she has caught the eye on this tour. It isn’t just her quality, it is the fact that she is so different and Arsenal need their attacking play to look different this season. You need drums, you need bass, you need rhythm. But you do also need someone capable of a virtuoso guitar solo.
COYGG
The way that they play out from the back can not only be suicidal but it also leaves the front runners with no scoring opportunities. It was over ten minutes yesterday before I heard Russo’s name mentioned. It certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in supporters
and it was preseason………………can we not just wait for competitive matches before we start this debbie doom stuff? FFS!
Exactly, pre-season a chance to try some experiments with little or no consequence. What did we learn? Jonas wants to slow the play down even more than we have suffered over the last few seasons and have us camping in our own penalty area. We have some exciting players being wasted by our coach’s ideology!
This is what we used to do under Joe and it was peerless against low blocks. You play with your food a little, get the opponent away from their goal line then go in behind them.
Agree, but Manu displayed a very hesitant and risky short distribution, we will see if DVD can do better.
DVD had better do better or we will reap the pain of continually playing out from the back
And Raya, Saliba, and Gabriel also do the same thing. You try to draw teams out and then quickly go behind. There were some moments where it came off yesterday, and some moments where it didn’t. That’s pre-season.
Tim, you have been in the US too long. It’s football, not soccer! Time to come home and be decontaminated by family and friends.
Football is the game in the USA where the ball rarely touches the ball!
Let’s never give up the title football for our game.
Like Rugby, American football is a game played by men with funny-shaped balls. And should be called Handegg.
I’m concerned if Jonas thinks he needs to slow play down. There is patience and comotose! 60,000 at the Emirates will soon get tired of watching the grass grow more quickly than our build up play. We are at our best playing fast, expansive football and creating a spectacle to match. Rosa, Katie (Reid) and Mariona appeared to be the only ones who ignored the team talk and attempted “the beautiful game” which is what the fans want to see. It was pointless bringing them in if we just want them to stand still like everyone else appeared to do… Read more »
I don’t think they ignored the team talk, they were brought in specifically to show those qualities. Completely understand having reservations about the coach but I think the ‘everything good that happens is clearly because those players ignored the coach’ stuff is already a bit old. He just bought those players and he brought them in to do that.
I don’t have a problem with Jonas per se he has recruited some excellent players it is just so frustrating that he appears to come up with a plan and then gets blinkered. You mention that this mess about at the back was evolved to counteract the low block which I understand. However, Chelsea do not play a low block and they were quite happy standing there watcing us standing there! It was blindingly obvious after about half hour we were going to end up getting caught but we persevered with the same thing anyway until with a couple of… Read more »
Passing from one to the other and back again in front of their own goal denying the front runners any participation will lose games everywhere and support at the Emirates. Jonas has brought great players in to score goals and they never get to see the ball. Frustration will soon set in among players and supporters.
Interesting thoughts from Jonas. I’m not too keen on slowing the play even more! But, as you noted, used against the right opponent, it can work well. Chelsea, though, seemed content to stand still and wait us out in a beautiful game of chicken! That said, towards the end of last season, the team seemed to find a good balance of pace and patience that was lacking this weekend. I hope the team quickly learns to anticipate and connect with the smart movements of Mariona and Kafaji. They, along with Russo and, at times, Foord were the most exciting on… Read more »
So this change in style of play with low blocks could work, but Chelsea is a high block, it doesn’t make sense, when the fans start booing at the Emirates they will think it’s bad, because it’s a boring game to watch, it makes it seem like the team doesn’t want to play, Pep Guardiola style (at least when it comes to attacking they are efficient and convincing in their playmaking). I’ve suffered in the Olympics, it looks like it will be the same with Arsenal, patience sir.
Mariona is excellent 10 too, if Meado pick up an injury, Rosa can play as 7 and Mariona 10. Mariona can play 10 and 11 and Rosa 10 and 7, happy days.
Cheers, Tim. Yes, indeed, preseason should be harder than anything you expect to face in the season. Also I get that JE is doing everything he can to give us the best chance of qualifying for the CL. Interesting points about the two markets and the challenge for Arsenal Women in engaging fans who are already into the NWSL. And yes, it was clear as soon as they stepped onto the pitch that both Kafaji and Caldentey are in the right positions at 10 and 7 respectively. I see what you are saying regarding low blocks and playing out from… Read more »
11 you mean, Mariona played left winger
Whoops sorry!
I think the problem with how we deal with low blocks is always connected to lack of speed and variety. We need constant movement – vertical as well as horizontal movement – one-touch passing, dummy runs, mazy dribbles into the box, etc. We don’t seem to unsettle the other side enough.
Looking forward to the season. The team looks a little more cooked than last year at this time but quite as ready as Chelsea. The decision making at the back in both games here was a little suspect which we could have been penalized a lot more. As a coach and as a centerback, the amount of “futzing around” the box is more risk than reward for me. We are good for at least a couple of mistakes in the box that would have been far less damaging if it occurred out and away from the box. I think that… Read more »
One thing we couldn’t learn from the pre-season was how Stina would link with Rosa and Mariona. Our lack of speed in moving forward is often mentioned and I do believe Stina is our speediest attacker. She just needs to stay onside! It will be interesting to see how she and Lessi are used. With our new recruits there’s not a lot of space for them to play together, so I expect it will be Lessi working her socks of for an hour and then time to sing “She scores the goals, she scores the goals”.
I must admit it does worry me when they mess about with it across our back line. I still get this feeling of ‘same ol, same ol’
On a positive note Kafaji looks really good
1 week until uwcl qualification and most of the players looking far from ready to go. I am not that confident tbh, and what about the right wing? Are we gonna play Kuhl out there when Mead cant play? To me we are not looking better now compared to last season when we played Linköping. Not many players are ready to play 90 minutes and lets face it, most of the players are looking heavy and slow both mentally and phyically and that is not a good sign. Hope I am wrong and we go smashing it but thats not… Read more »
I think some of our players are ready to go – Russo’s performance was a reaction to the heat which she had not recovered from. She was outstanding in the first game. Little was also excellent against Spirit, but was being asked to do an impossible job against Chelsea and wasn’t helped by the poor decision-making of others. Everything you say is valid, IMO, but I just wanted to make those points. Also, I think we will know more after the Southampton game. Mead’s fitness is a big worry though because though KK is skilful and pacy, she can’t force turnovers… Read more »
Totally agree! I hope we will get some more clarity after Southampton as you said. I just dont like when we always have to cover holes in our squad and using players out of position all the time. To me that is a sign of an unbalanced squad. We might have the numbers but do we have the best mix of playes in our squad? I dont think so and to me that is a big conern. Jonas have been here for many years now and yet he hasnt found his best 11 and players who are working well togehter… Read more »
Yup! JE doesn’t believe in first 11s, just starting and finishing players, so I don’t think he sees that as a problem It doesn’t sound like we are getting anyone else, though from what JE said. Mariona has already made the LW position her own and I think the link-up between her, Kafaji and LessStina could be beautiful. And on the other side, Lessi, Foxy and Mead (if fit) will cause a lot of damage. But you are right, we don’t have a goal-out-of-nothing cheat code player. I do think we will score more goals than last season, however. We… Read more »
