Report: Al Ittihad table €35 million offer for Trossard

According to Fabrizio Romano, Saudi club Al Ittihad have tabled a €35 million offer for Leandro Trossard.

A source inside the club told Arseblog News, “no sale is being entertained at any price,” despite Raheem Sterling’s recent loan recruitment.

With the Saudi Pro League’s transfer window closing later today, you sense Al Ittihad, who count Karim Benzema in their ranks, have chanced their arm, perhaps hoping the winger’s frustration at not starting the Gunners’ first two Premier League games of the season could work in their favour.

It’s the second summer in a row that Mikel Arteta has had to fend off interest in an important squad member. This time last year there was serious Saudi interest in Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazil international was dropped to the bench while the situation blew over.

Trossard started ahead of Gabriel Martinelli in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton but was largely ineffective. All the same, he’s been one of the Gunners’ most effective and efficient players since arriving from Brighton in January 2023.

The Belgian has 12 assists and 19 goals to his name in 71 appearances.

Ahead of Arsenal’s win at Aston Villa, Arteta hinted that he was prepared for late and leftfield transfer-related issues, saying:

“Anything can happen both ways, especially in the last week. You have to be ready, especially in the last week, you have to be ready and be prepared because a lot of surprises can come, for many different reasons and we are prepared.”

If we sell him, I honestly don’t see us winning the league. He has been that important for us.

PeteyB

Sure. To my mind, with him we have an outside chance of winning the league, without him top 4 will be a challenge. He’s been such a great player
We’d really need the attacking Gabriels to find some serious form.

GoonerJust

Bugger off+

Johnny 4 Hats

If they went to £60m and it was June, I’d consider.

But now? Hell no.

Why the fuck are they trying to do business after the European market has closed?

Dumb arses.

A different George

I understand Newcastle United might be willing to sell them [insert name].

Johnny 4 Hats

The one thing I’m pleased about is that Saudi Arabia have got some sense.

I would’ve been so devastated if the Casemiro’s and Antony’s and Maguire’s (fuck, they are all united players!) of this world had been easily sold for a decent fee. Especially given we took a massive financial hit on our rejects just a few seasons earlier.

It would appear that Saudi do actually want semi-good, not completely broken footballers. And that’s good news for us.

Alan Sunderland

That makes absolutely no sense, how does what Saudi teams are doing make a difference to Arsenal unless we are selling them a aging over paid player, or a player who still has value for a lot more than an European team would pay.

Johnny 4 Hats

We don’t really have any fat in our squad. But plenty of other clubs do.

If the Saudi’s were just hoovering up any old piece of overpaid crap then that would benefit the likes of Chelsea and United a lot more than us.

United are absolutely hamstrung with these huge wages on their books for players who have no value.

It’s just a relief that Saudi aren’t going to do them any favours.

Alan Sunderland

They would just use the money on other players who are over payed and under perform what’s the difference. They froze Sterling out and brought in Sancho. Get rid of Varane, keep Maguire and bring in de Lit. Arsenal have fly Emirates on their chest and visit Rwanda on their sleeves. The training ground is named for Sobha realty. Give it a rest, the premier league and every team have their nose in the oil states trough at every opportunity. No team is immune to it, and no team will refuse any opportunity of making money from it.

Johnny 4 Hats

Not sure I said a thing about the ethicality of doing business with Saudi. But you clearly had a pre made point you were desperate to get across. And I actually agree with that point. As regards the transfers, it’s a bit bizarre to say who cares if united sell crappy assets for millions of pounds because they’ll only buy more crappy assets. Even the basic law of averages suggests that they’ll eventually buy a good player. But they won’t have that opportunity as long as Saudi doesn’t sweep up their rubbish for them. On a further note, I’ve never… Read more »

A different George

I hate both the Fly Emirates/Emirates Stadium and the (now almost ridiculously ironic) Visit Rwanda sponsorships. And I’m not fond of billionaires like the Kronkes. But I still think there’s a difference between taking money from oil states and being a department of an oil state. I think there is such a thing as sportwashing; “Fly Emirates” is a small aspect of that project. Owning City, PSG, and Newcastle is a much bigger–and therefore much more objectionable–part of it.

Heavenly Chapecoense

But he was that important for Brighton when we bought him. Kane was even more important for Tottenham when Bayern bought him.

Oddo

No way. They should shop around at Chelski.

Bobbert

They already launder money there, which they own 15 percent of Clearlake

John C

Could they put in a £35m offer for Partey instead?

MeSoHornsey

lol and just have Jorginho holding the middle by himself against the scum, next match?

John C

Timber can invert to add a to him

Spanish Gooner

Obviously I don’t think we should sell Partey at this stage, but I do think Jorginho is very unlucky to have lost his place as “first backup” to Partey for the season. We were basically a title-winning side from the moment Jorginho moved into midfield and Havertz went up top, and while I can understand bringing in somebody who’s considered an improvement (Merino) I don’t think Partey has done anything since the Qatar world cup to suggest he should be playing in front of Jorgi.

PGunner

Erm, fuck off.

Henkamp

Ridiculous tw@ts, they are. Why didn’t they come for the likes of Nelson if they really wanted a winger? Them trying to prise away a prized part of our current artillery is a d*ck move. And they should be told of in the most colorful language that Edu can muster.

Henkamp

Them trying to prise away a prized part of our current artillery, after the European window has closed*

Tankard Gunner

Edu walks into alhilal board room. Lights his cigar and blows 2 rings into the chairman’s face. He leans in and whispers in his ear “not even close. Mind the gap.”

Matt

I literally just typed this exact comment – to the letter – before I say this. I really hope this was our official response.

Ben Swain

Hi sportswashers,
Kindly fuck off.
Sincerely, everyone

I miss santi cazorla

No fan of Saudis of any of the other middle east nation but if sportswashing is a term, USA Is by far the biggest. The only difference is
Saudis are stupidly direct
While USA does it very slyly.

Bobbert

How many sports teams does the US government own directly

Kris

Sportswashing is indeed a term, but it’s meaning being to improve tarnished reputations through investing in sport.

So, it is the exact opposite to what one American, Todd Boehly is doing so successfully, which is using sport to tarnish his own reputation.

Teryima Adi

@Using sport to tarnish his own reputation 😀😀😀

Eric Blair

You probably need to think that one through again.

Denver Gunner

You have no idea what you are talking about. I understand you may not like us yanks investing in your teams but out is individuals, not government organizations.

it is not a government policy to use sport to hide other issues with our country.

portugunner

right, it is the high finance…

CommunistGunner

came here to write that. However, the USA doesn’t do the same as a state. The emirates are at the same time a state and many large corporations for the rulers riches.
in the USA and Europe the coorporations wash themselves clean with sports and tha state mostly sets the conditions. Just look at Rheinmetall with Dortmund.

Spanish Gooner

The US companies also almost exclusively do it as investors. Kroenke expects to make a profit out of Arsenal over a long time-span, as does Boehly at Chelsea etc. They may be mistaken and lose money, but people make poor business decisions all the time and that’s ok.
The Saudis, like Qatar, Abu Dhabi and previous Oligarchs like Abramovic, are blowing up the financial sustainability of the world’s most loved sport to advance other goals with no intention of ever making a profit. It’s a very key difference.

Bobbert

Doing business with mbs should get you brought up on charges.

@jbrusty

Get ta f*ck

matt keeler

Interesting timing on this!
If you they’d have offered that when our window was open, I wonder if we’d have done something

Tankard Gunner

For 35mil? Are you nuts? That’s short a digit at least.

GunnAlex

If you’re gonna disrupt our team after our window has closed. For an important and high value player. At least make it an offer that’s hard to refuse, and not what’s probably an accurate market value. What a waste of everyone’s time.

yen

Now go shop at Chelsea, they got like 86 extra wingers to spare.

Redbaron

We shouldn’t say no to 35m for Partey, if offered

Ealing

if Merino was not injured, and if declan was firing an all cylinder, perhaps we could have entertained a deal. over the last three games, declan has been playing at half strenght of last season

78/79/80

It’s a no from me. But thoughts: 1) Do buds get tabled without the clubs having talked beforehand? I don’t think so. 2) what kind of mentality does a ayer have to switch in his prime from possible PL trophy and champions league time to a desert league without global significance. He’s a Belgian international too of course. 3) is this therefore a move from the club after his antics at Villa. A warning to him. Or if we sell a warning to others. We’d be mad to sell unless there’s something going on behind the scenes that is toxic… Read more »

Alan Sunderland

You’ll get a lot of downvotes but they didn’t make a bid before sounding out trossard. Arsenal agreed a contract with Merino weeks before a deal was agreed with Sociedad. Arsenal agreed terms with Joan Garcia before they made an offer to Español. Why people think it only works one way is baffling. They don’t bid 35 million unless the player is willing to move.

Emi Rates

Dear sports washers,

We regret to inform you that Leandro is not for sale at this stage of the season. However, we have a ref called Chris Kavanagh. He’s a useless lump and you can have him for free.

Yours sincerely,

Arsenal

Wrrong

They already have him…

Mkkreuk

Thankfully it’s been officially rejected

I miss santi cazorla

They don’t really want to sign Trossard, they just want to destabilize us.

Santi’s Phonebox

Shocking that the owners of a PL team, that also own an entire league in their country are conveniently making offers to quality players of opposition teams in the PL.. Said owners of multi owned teams using that ability to destabilize PL teams they do like or see, mistakingly, as rivals. Yeah this multi club ownership isn’t affecting the PL at all. Blood on their hands wankers.

Declan Fried Rice with Egg

We’ve rejected it! Right decision.

Though it beggars the thought, on Trossard’s celebration against Villa.

Might’ve been playing on his mind a little bit regardless.

El Mintero

Be interesting to see how Trossard reacts. Probably they’d have doubled his salary. When we signed him he had fallen out with Brighton. He has previous with being unhappy if he does not get what he wants all the time…

Fletcher

Not in this life

Santi’s Phonebox

Headline should have read, “Owners of Newcastle Table Bid for Trossard in Saudi League in Attempt to Destabilize Player for Newcastle’s Benefit”.

Alan Sunderland

He might agitate for a move, the goal celebration was the first sign of an attitude he’s shown at Arsenal but he has previous with Brighton and Belgium.

Spanish Gooner

He is right to have an attitude because he can have genuine complaints about unfair treatment. Trossard was excellent as a 9 after Jesus got injured and was a huge part of us going on that winning run after Christmas that ended when he was dropped for an unfit GJ, and Trossard has never played 9 consistently since. He then clearly outperformed Martinelli at the end of last season and rightly took his starting spot, only to find himself back on the bench after summer. He’s also the worst paid out of all of our midfield and attacking options bar… Read more »

Ealing

partly true, because if it was all true, elite clubs from top leagues would have made a more serious offer a few months ago

Alan Sunderland

He’s a good player no doubt, but that’s nothing to do with what I posted. Maybe he will want to move for the money. I don’t remember him playing false 9 after Christmas, I seem to remember Havertz playing there replacing Eddie.

Forest gooner

It was in his debut season

Qwaliteee

Do one, rich fuckwits.

TranT

I hope our fax was turned off, otherwise receiving that offer was a waste of our fax machine’s paper and toner. Leandro is our (shared) second best goalscorer of the season so far, we can’t sell him.
I do understand the desire to sign Arsenal players, but they should choose the right age range for their pensioner league, so I suggest to enquire for Kenny Sansom or Alan Sunderland.

morecoffeeman

Why didn’t they offer that for Jesus?!?
What other leagues windows are still open?
