Sp*rs 0-1 Arsenal – player ratings

A second half goal from Gabriel, heading home a Bukayo Saka corner, was enough to for Arsenal to take all three points in a typically tetchy North London derby.

The home side had a few moments here and there despite plenty of possession, but a Gunners side without Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Riccardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko dug in to make it three wins in a row at the toilet bowl.

Here’s how the players rated this afternoon.

I don’t think there would have been big complaints with 3 wins and a draw from those opening fixtures

BigArse

True, but that in retrospect it should have been 4 from 4 if not for some bullshit refereeing. That is well worth complaint.

TotsOfJack

True, but I still feel that the players need to as much as possible take the referee out of the equation. Let’s control what we can control.

Arsenalnut

Agreed, but what could Declan have done differently? Could he have moved away from the location of the foul he committed? Hmm, he was moving away when Veltman threw the ball at his legs from behind. Would it have been better if he backed up facing the play? Exactly what should he have done to take the referee out of the equation?

Ödegårds Magnifika Fot

He could’ve restrained himself from that nudge… If he did that he’d probably still be on the pitch

Diaby’s boot for John Terry’s face

If the ref was consistent and carded the Brighton player for kicking the ball away in the first half it would have set the precedent and I doubt Rice would have nudged the ball away in the second half.
Can’t control for a ref choosing when they feel like following the laws of the game.

EmanAFC

Premier League referees ARE the equation. They’ll keep on making the headlines about themselves

Daveod

Will just have to beat 115 on Sunday then won’t we 💪💪💪

steve T

130*

Jay

Make that 130 FC. Extra 15 charges appended

GoonerJust

I love Martinelli enthusiasm and work ethic, if he can improve that Henry-esque far post finish, that would’ve been fantastic

crazygunner

I have no complaints it was just the manner of the dropped points that wrankles!

C.B.

Love Gabriel and beating Sp**s away! Hope we can win away next time in the PL…

Henrik

We have the best back four in world football. And spurs are shite.

Henkamp

It is obvious now (both counts.) The fact that people try to argue point one is incredulous to me. Check our record in away games since the beginning of this year, it’s a madness them boys are doing! They need to start getting their well-deserved trophies so vultures like Real Madrid can stay away!

Yiannis

I agree with both observations 👍

Cuban coca-cola

If recollections are correct, the 115’s have allowed as many goals this season as we have on the road all calendar year so far

onenil

One-nil to The Arsenal

Rufusstan

Had exactly the same rattling through my head after Gabby scored (they were obviously not going to score by that point without referee help).

M2thek

ROCK.SOLID.

Wengerball

Great win with a very limited squad..you could tell Jorginho, Trossard, and a few others aren’t used to starting and playing a full 90.

AP Goonee

“Trumpet Twats”… 😀
Goldstandard!!

onenil

Go blow you’re own horn. Suckers!

RockyRog58

We played like we knew we would win ! I watched like I knew we’d win ! Guess what ? We won !!! With a defence like that, life seems so much more comfortable ! Loved seeing Nwaneri get on & look so comfortable

Fireman Sam

Nwaneri looked excellent.

Tobi6footplus

Raya has really impressed me so far this season. I think he’s arguably been our best player this season; almost flawless. Last season our back 4 were the key factor in our defensive excellence. This season Raya has been the difference, making important saves at key moments in virtually every single match so far. Not to mention his supreme control of the box against crosses and corners. Kudos Arteta for proving us wrong yet again.

The Beast

I’d agree. Along with Saka & Havertz, I think he’s been a standout player so far this season.

And if Timber keeps up the kind of form he showed yesterday, I’d chuck him in the mix as well. The options we have across the back line are frightening.

Boywonder

Huge fan of partey however it’s blatantly clear he’s legs are gone, with rice playing it’s not as obvious, but we really do need to move him on.

charvakan

That thought had occurred to Edu and Arteta, but there were no takers, and he’s proving very useful now with the injuries and suspension. He’s our man and he’ll do whatever he’s capable of to support the Arsenal.

Hanning

Don’t need to be voted up or down.
Just wanted to say, get the absolute fuck in!
I am so happy.
As you were….

Tobi6footplus

I don’t give a monkey’s behind about what you need. You get a thumbs up regardless. COYG!!!!

Walleye

I watched and focused on party for four minutes or so in first half. His legs are shot. How that happens to a 30 yo athlete I don’t understand. There is absolutely no power in his moves. The 442 really covered up his frailty.

Tobi6footplus

All those injuries won’t help.

BsinGooner

Because it is possible he is not 31, but 35+. Not saying that’s a definite, but there’s lot of age fraud in Asia and Africa.

Walleye

I do not know about this, but for perspective there have been a some Latin mlb players where it is suspected they were three even four years younger than reported when signing their first contract.

Frankie

Valid point.. party is at least 36 … .. legs are shot …

Dada

Atleast provide some evidence.

Mark

Anyone remember the Ghana Black Starlets winning the FIFA U17 world cup in 1995? Most of them built like big Gabi, with beards.

Trixie Popsicle

Disgusting comment.

The Beast

And your evidence for this is what exactly? Apart from a massive generalisation of ppl from 2 of the biggest, most diverse & populated continents on earth?

Crash Fistfight

Not sure it would be speculation if there was evidence involved.

It does appear to be quite prevalent in west African countries, though.

Samuel Eto’o brought in scientific age testing for Cameroonian players because so many of their underage players had been falsifying their true ages, as an example (this was just last year):

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/01/25/football/samuel-etoo-cameroon-age-players-africa-spt-intl/index.html#:~:text=Climbing%20Esports%20Hockey-,Cameroon%20ejected%2032%20players%20for%20failing%20age%20tests%20for%20a,is%20dealing%20with%20'age%20cheating'&text=As%20a%20continent%2C%20Africa%20had,of%20challenges%20facing%20the%20sport.

Rozza14

Havertz man, so freaking good

ObiKing

Him and Raya have been our best players this season.

onenil

I think Saka getting an assist in every single game improves us somewhat.

eternalflamini

We are at danger of getting used to how good Saka is. God I love him so much.

Oddo

I love him more than you do.

Rufusstan

And how young he still is, Every time a new starlet breaks through, he gets lauded, just as Cole Palmer. They are usually in the same age range as Saka, who has been playing at the highest level for nearly 5 years

Max

Loving radio raheems picture

Mark

What a huge result. We were looking at a very real possibility of being 8 pts behind City after 5 matches had we not gotten three points today. Definitely think we can get points off of City, but going to be tough especially without Odegaard which would mean that Jorginho or Partey playing. Luckily we have some striker options and Havertz did a strong job in midfield today, just wish we could get Rice back to the 6 and not have to rely on Jorginho or Partey in that match. Timber is really settling in well at left back and… Read more »

ObiKing

I would slot Timber next Partey in midfield and Calfiori at left back against City.

Henrik

If rather take rice though

Rufusstan

Rice will be back for next Sunday and the City game anyway. He was only banned for one game.

JackSW

Don’t know if the “Jorginho, Borginho” is new in the ratings, or if I’ve just never noticed it before but it gave me a chuckle

Arsenalnut

He’s Georgie to me.

PatJ

Sp*rs:
No Rice.
No Odegaard.
No problem.

Celebration Police

I really don’t like when people use this to mock Spurs. Arsenal and Spurs are not in the same class. They are a midtable team. What makes them better than Fulham? We can have 7 players out and we’ll still beat them. The margin is so wide. It’s only tight because it’s a derby where emotions run high.

Tommy Coakley

It’s the big brother/little brother syndrome. Their problem will always be having us as neighbours, constantly trying to compete with us. History, trophy wise they’re no bigger than West Ham,

TotsOfJack

All toilet bowls are white.

PatJ

In the beginning, yes.

Henrik

Hahaha take a look ag sons face in the pic while gabriel is celebrating. Hes like nooooooooo 😀

Mr Dob Bobalina

Gabriel motm for sure but just want to mention how assured Raya was. Especially good in that first 15 minutes. He has had a great start to the season.

Heavy Gunner

Blogs- I think the Sp*rs trumpet is tuned to B-flat. I’ll get me coat…

Goonshow

well… it definitely ain’t at all sharp.

North London Forever

Nobody would be inclined to play the Spurs trumpet naturally. It must have been accidental.

Hurensohn

Don’t understand the TP rating at all, beyond blogs absolutely looking for reasons to criticise him.

At the start of the season everyone was worried about players running past him, then about him losing possession poorly. In a game where they targeted or midfielders neither happened today. White gave them their best chance with a bad pass and had other really sloppy moments too, far more culpable in that sense. No mention of it.

Vonnie

Partey has ALWAYS given the ball away. Now he does it more often and can’t run, he needs to be upgraded. The fact that no team was prepared to spend money on him in the summer says all you need to know.

Hurensohn

All that says is he missed a year of football with injuries and nobody wanted to take the gamble that they were behind him.

Keni

I’m actually unimpressed by that. It seems Partey is now blamed for others’ errors. There were a number of times he had to cover after Jorginho lost possession.
It’s true he’s not as fast as before but he’s nowhere as bad as blogs make him appear.

TotsOfJack

I’ve actually watched the game back again, especially after the criticism of TP I focused on him a lot. I honestly can’t see how one can say that was a poor performance. He was absolutely solid.
We need to be very careful about allowing past performances to influence our judgement. Especially when we believe a player is “washed” we tend to judge him more harshly.

Fireman Sam

I thought Partey was pretty good.
It seemed to me that Benny Blanco was the one a bit off the pace and giving the ball away.

morecoffeeman

I don’t normally say this but I actually thought the referee had a good game.
For once I don’t think I can complain.

Arsepedant

Agreed. Gillett is usually crap, but we’ve won five out of six matches he’s refereed with us. And he got just about everything spot on today. The only quibble I’d have is I thought Timber’s booking was harsh.

nanogunner

But to be fair, the booking was for either that slip on the ball or shirt pulling. Other refs would give two yellows.

A different George

I thought he was awful, especially in the first half. No consistency on cautions, no consistency on free kicks, no consistency on playing advantage. But he was just as bad against them as against us, so he comes off looking good.

nanogunner

I like this no nonsense straight booking. Imagine us plays Brighton with their tactical fouls. That would be great for our second half game flow since all players will be on the edge.

Crash Fistfight

I thought it was me imagining it, but I’ve seen a couple of other creators (including James) say that White was below par, which I thought.

Blogs certainly has a running narrative influencing his opinions on players. Partey seems to be persona non grata these days (seems like most people on here seem to have bought into that same narrative, too).

Arsefull

You are correct to highlight the subjective nature of ratings but perhaps you might consider that there is a difference between purposefully creating a narrative versus unconsciously feeding one. Reading your recent ratings involving Party I have noticed that they often start with a qualifier or a comparison (i.e, despite the fact…or unlike others who played late into the Euro competition there is no excuse….etc.,). These qualifiers or comparisons are rarely positive when it comes to Partey; whereas in the case of Jorghino, who in all fairness you rated lower, it is also fairly noted that these are his first… Read more »

Dada

Bravo. Well said.

Ben

Brilliant!

Hurensohn

On TP – “there were just too many careless moments from him – twice he presented chances to Spurs with bad touches in our box.” I’ve just rewatched the entire game looking for these careless moments. There is 1 late in the game where he mistimes a clearance and it comes off his studs, Gabi makes a tackle to clear it. 1 moment where he mistimes a clearance. On White – “Did his job defensively, Spurs had little to offer down his side” In the first half kulusevski has an early chance coming from a move down our right hand side.… Read more »

A different George

I also watched the game again and, like you, I looked for the Partey mistakes and, like you, I didn’t see what Andrew saw. I also didn’t see Ben White as having played badly, apart from the one terrible pass. I saw White doing a very difficult job against Son (who–sorry to say it–is a very good winger, one of the best in the league) and mostly neutralising him. Just a word on the first, live, watch–especially in a crowd of Arsenal supporters–as opposed to a second watch with no tension because you know the outcome. Live, I thought Timber… Read more »

portugunner

thomas lost the ball 5 times, i‘m always afraid when he looses time in possession

Hurensohn

He misplaced 4 passes, only Saliba had fewer on the team. He won all his duels (7/7) and we won the game without conceding. Nobody I’ve seen rating from have rated him as poorly as blogs has.

Vonnie

He was poor, get over it.

Objectivefan

I also thought White had a poor game, by his high standards, both defensively and with his errant passing.

Arshavins left foot

Time to give Raya 10/10. He does not have to make lots of great saves. His positioning, presence gives confidence to the defence. Another clean sheet which gives us 3 points. I would also give White, Saliba, Gabriel and Timber all 10/10 for the clean sheet as well. 2nd half we was completely under pressure and Spurs hardly had a sniff..They must regret not going for Toney as much as Solanke is good player. He is Bournemouth good level. Another match winning assist for Saka so for consistency he must have 10/10 as well. The rest simply should get 9/10… Read more »

Yiannis

Oh, I love this habit of beating Spurs at their home. What a great feeling.

Anderslimparisverygood

The amazing thing about this team is that I didn’t feel at all nervous that we would let them back into it once we went 1 nil up. In years gone by the 5 mins of additional board being put up would have given me palpations but the belief this team has is phenomenal. No amazing stand out performances going forward but everyone knew and did their job defensively.

OdalGooner

I said the same thing at the pub. “Look at Spurs players on our corners… any set piece… they look scared, disorganized, frantic” – I love how we make our opponents insecure just by our reputation (well, and facts) preceding us. We never looked uncomfortable when they came at us. A few scary moments, but before I had time to swear, one of the boys had already cleared up the mess. You always make mistakes. It’s how you react that matters. On sunday we made mistakes. We still came out winners, with a clean sheet, and London is Red. As… Read more »

Proper chicken innit

Need to change Jesus’ hair

Rosapirescastle

Doesn’t Timber just complement the back trio and Raya so well.
We really have a superb defensive line , teak tough but coolness personified on the ball… loving it , to tough it out after the week we had does so much for the mentality, not that it was lacking but for start of new season it s good to put down a marker and just remind everyone and build again .

Alan Sunderland’s Afro

Up your holes you massive Trumpet Twats!

Cuban coca-cola

they can (literally) blow it out their asses

Denver Gunner

1p’s for everyone in this game. As injured as we are to get a win on their patch over these twats is unbelievable!

Denver Gunner

should read 10s for everyone!

C.B.

All footballers make more than 1p a second!!

Charlie

Fucking massive result. I love how hard this team work for one another and how much they enjoy defending. Nervy one but it always is, very satisfying result in the end. COYG

Mrs Merson

* Poor going forward.
* Defensively fairly solid. White weakest link there.
* Spurs often looked more dangerous then flopped final third (LOL).
* Raya and Timber impressed me in addition to the central defensive legends.
* Ref too card-happy. Annoying trend generally. Sort it out, Webb.
* Nwaneri could play a part esp while Ode out.
* Weakened side for Atalanta, pls.

wrightstuff8

You have some valid points but common man, we just beat spuds with big players missing. You have to enjoy it otherwise what’s the point?! You’ll blink and this cycle will be done.
I’m delighted for the lads. COYG!!!!!!

Brazilian Gooner

I was really impressed with Nwaneri. For a 17yo to come in a game like that and look as comfortable as he did, controlling tempo and passes like he was a veteran, we really have a gem in our hands. I have a feeling that in less pressure games we will see him starting in the Ode role

Fireman Sam

Agree totally. He looked excellent.

OdalGooner

Though I agree, I’m going to call him vastly overrated, and claim he’s been introduced too soon. You know, just to lower expectations, so he can prove me wrong. Way better than the alternative. I’m not superstitious or anything, I’m just.. you know. Ehm. (He was excellent, but let’s absolutely not get ahead of ourselves – he’s young, and needs space to impress, instead of just being told “yeah, we always knew you’d be this good”, like it was a foretold prophecy and not a lot of hard work on his part. So yeah, Nwaneri… you weren’t shit, but you… Read more »

Bajegooner246

Bit weird to give Ben White a 7 and Partey a 6. White was quite sloppy in possession more than once and he was at fault for presenting Solanke with that opportunity in the first half.

JP4SURE

Trumpet twats🤪

Brins

10 out of 10 for the back 5..Dealt with everything in the way it should be.. Merino would have made it look better in the absence if Ode, but we won at sp**rs.. Enjoy gooners.

Like White and Rice

Great team win, 9s for everyone as far as I am concerned!

On another topic, Sorry to hear your move to Real Madrid was blocked, but glad you will still be doing the Arseblog and the podcasts!

xanat

Insane! They should be starting to regulate these bloggers transfers. Vultures indeed.

Death by 300,000 Passes
Paul

Timber was excellent. Very high hopes for him

ScotchEggsRule

Getting shades of Aliens, when I saw Timber squaring up. He has that same explosive streak, you never knew was there…. Until it was.

ScotchEggsRule

Why does auto correct change Lauren to aliens? :o/

Vonnie

Was wondering what that was about!

Rising Dough

Hats off to Jorginho. Hasn’t played a minute all season, and finds himself starting and completing an away North London Derby. Any signs of rustiness disappeared quickly, and while his contributions were of the non-spectacular variety, there were relatively few misplays. Well done.

wrightstuff8

Yep, I thought the same.
A very important squad player and he earned his wage today.

charvakan

I was impressed with the defensive work all the “front four” players did. The organization was superb–chapeau, Mikel.

Fireman Sam

Defensive masterclass. Well done lads!

Arsenalnut

Blogs, you are being hard on Partey. A couple of times he got caught because passes to him arrived at the same time as defenders. I thought lingering on the ball was a problem across the field all game.

martinhaze

What does it take for a defender to get a 9?

steve T

how has big gabby not got a 10?

Gary Murray

Thought White handled Son well against a pretty dangerous player. Saka helped as well and he’s easily their best player. Was surprised on Van der Ver was easily pressed by Havertz who I thought was also great defensively

Zet

Ben snuffed out Son totally. That is so crucial as we know Son is key to their play.

Fleurn

Not a biggie but I think the TV described it as a 442?

Karthik

I just felt we were ready to defend and counter attack. is it because our midfield is slow and does not have the briskness to move the ball due to Odegaard and Declan not available for the game.

Dholio

Radio Raheem wants some more moozzarella!
