Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will do everything they can to get key players fit for Sunday’s clash with Liverpool although the evidence suggests he’s facing an uphill battle on most fronts.
Sky Sports reported this afternoon that Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori were all absent from today’s training session while long-term absentees Martin Odegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney also sat things out.
With William Saliba suspended following last weekend’s red card against Bournemouth, the Gunners will almost certainly have to reshuffle their pack for the visit of the league leaders.
Facing the press this afternoon, the first question posed was about the availability of Saka, Timber and Calafiori. Arteta replied: “We’re going to do our very best to somehow have them available, but obviously it’s very, very uncertain.”
Reports in Italy have claimed that Calafiori has avoided a serious injury but still tweaked medial ligaments in his right knee during Tuesday’s Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk. Arteta says the player, who was concerned about a separate knee issue a couple of weeks ago, is still undergoing tests.
“He needs some more tests. Yesterday, he had some, today he’s going to have some more,” confirmed the boss.
“And from there we will know. Because last time as well we thought it was really bad. And then he ended up playing two days after or three. So let’s see, let’s see how it is.”
He did add that the Italy international may not be so lucky this time around. As for Saka, injured on international duty with England, he’s variously been close to a return, ruled out and now potentially back in contention, all in the space of a few days. It sounds like it’s a case of ‘watch this space’.
“He’s done a bit of training on the grass. How far we can get him to Sunday, that’s a different question. We have another day, which is the good thing that this week had an extra day, but we’ll see.”
On Timber, who hasn’t been included in a provisional squad for the Netherlands’ upcoming fixtures, he added: “It’s the first session that he could have some involvement. He’s been out for a while. We expected him to be further back than where he is at the moment, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
Arteta does have a number of options when it comes to finding a partner for Gabriel Magalhaes. Ben White could be shifted to centre-back with Thomas Partey filling in at right-back. Or he could trust Jakub Kiwior and hand a start to either Myles Lewis-Skelly or Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.
“We have different options, players that have already played before,” said Arteta. “It’s true that that partnership [with Gabriel] has been very stable, you said he’s played every single moment, but he’s not available. We have to find a different solution which is something that as a team we need to be good at as well.
“Obviously, we’ve had so much going on [injury-wise], especially in the backline in the first few months of the season. We’ve had to adapt to that. That’s why we have some versatile players and they’ve been really, really helpful. Ideally, we would have other options as well and more consistency. But that’s the situation that we have at the moment.”
I hope Nwaneri starts on Sunday
Shakhtar was a good game to have given him a start. If he didn’t start then, don’t see him starting this one.
We will see a combo of TP5 — Rice — Havertz/Trossard.
So if Timber isn’t fit then it’s got to be White, Gabriel, Kiwior and Zinchenko. Partey, Merino, Jorginho, Trossard, Martinelli and Havertz? Or am I missing someone (quite possible)? Still a good team but there’s no hiding from those injuries at this point….
yeah you missed RICE 🤣
Haha, typical. Oh well, he’s only a 100 million pound player, no biggie.
Aint a good butter chicken without the…
Box of wine
Hmmm good point
Please let’s not be subjected to the sight of Salah running at Zinch all afternoon!
Agree, prefer to see MLS at LB
Kiwior — Big Gabi — Timber — Benny
My guess is this. I have a feeling Timber will be available for this. Whether he is fit enough to start, though, that is another question entirely.
Timber — Big Gabi — Kiwior — Benny
We will be overcompensating. Let everyone play in their most natural positions. That way they don’t overthink things.
Benny—Timber (I doubt he is fit)—Gabriel—Kiwior
The lineup for Sunday (as complicated as it is) should be straightforward Raya White-Rice-Gabriel-Kiwior Partey—Merino Jesus—Nwaneri—Martinelli Harvetz I feel this team should be strong and balanced enough to deal with Liverpool and sneak a win at home. I still feel The reason we struggled against Bournemouth is because Arteta tried to force too many square pegs in round holes. Apart from Rice, everyone slots into their Natural positions with minimal adaptations . Rice has played Center back a couple of times in the past and should be able to cope in one game. It’s a home game. We are winning… Read more »
With your lineup, the goal differential for the game might look like your downvotes.
Might get super down voted for this but, how about White, Rice, Gabi and kiwior as a back four? (if timber isn’t fit). Could have a double pivot of partey and jorgi ahead of them, front four of trossard, Kai, martinelli and Nwaneri? (although I think Arteta would go with Jesus instead). It’s really shit we’re this depleted before Liverpool. A full strength head to head would have been sooo sumptuous! 🙁

We must find our way to play good and fascinating football again.
We have a lot of really good players, several of them very close to world class: Havertz, Rice, White, Gabriel, probably Raya, Partey at his best. And we have three who are unquestionably among the best in the world, Saka, Ødegaard, Saliba, who will probably all be absent, So, a real test for the others.
Why are not debating on possibly outscoring Liverpool we all so focused on defence as if our attack hasn’t been the problem this season
Because defence is where the injuries are.
I’d be inclined to give Jesus a run of games, as a shadow striker behind havertz (what Mikel does lately with Tross). He’s a hard worker, anyway goes back all the time to help and get the ball, and deserves to get a chance.
Tross or Marti can continue on the left, on the right we have sterling until Saka is fit again (even Trossard as he’s ambidextrous).
I prefer Havertz plays as a second striker and Jesus upfront. That why he was so effective at Leverkusen. Shame he went to Chelsea after that.
