Martinelli receiving treatment for calf problem

Gabriel Martinelli is a doubt for Brazil’s World Cup qualifier with Peru after picking up a calf problem.

In a statement released in the early hours, the CBF said: “Gabriel Martinelli complained of pain in his right calf and underwent an MRI on Sunday night which showed a small area of muscle edema in the area.

“The player continues to undergo physiotherapy treatment under the care of the Brazilian National Team’s Medical Department.”

In layman’s terms, it sounds like Gabi has a bit of a calf strain and we’re hoping the fact he’s not been sent home immediately means it’s not too serious.

Brazil host Peru in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time) in Brasilia and presumably, if Gabi sticks around, he won’t be back at London Colney until Friday morning.

That won’t leave much time for him to be assessed by Arsenal before the trip to Bournemouth.

Martinelli isn’t the only player Arsenal have concerns about. Kai Havertz has spent the Interlull at home due to a knee problem and Bukayo Saka returned home early from England’s camp after limping out of their defeat to Greece.

We’re waiting for an update on Jurrien Timber and Ben White, who both missed the 3-1 win over Southampton, while Martin Odegaard, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney are long-term absentees. Goalkeeper Neto will also sit out the trip to the Vitality as he’s unable to face his parent club.

Does it ever end?!?

C.B.

We could.form an excellent team with all those injured….

C.B.

Without injuries I am pretty sure we would have won the PL the last two seasons.

charvakan

Maybe. But what team doesn’t have important players miss a substantial number of games? Last season, Arsenal was actually fairly lucky when it comes to injuries. This year will be a real test. So far, we’ve managed to win without our captain. We’re quite deep in defense. I think we’ll be OK.

El Mintero

Really? We had no big injury worries last year that I can remember? In fact, we definitely dodged the injury bullet last season but now seems like it’s come back to bite us big time this year.

C.B.

Timber, Partey, Tomi, Jesus, ESR all missing.
We were so close to winning last season that we would have won with some of those available.

Nursing_father

We would have won it during Wengers era..There was a month Kolcieny, Rosicky, Walcott, Santi,Gibbs, Sanchez, Arteta, Wilshere, Coquelin were out all at once

International football may well have ended GJ’s arsenal career, has put Odegaard out for months and has now injured Saka and Martinelli.

I tried to watch England vs Finland on ITV and lasted about 5 mins. Ended up watching Ludwig instead. I know some people care, but I don’t.

I get my kicks from watching Arsenal and Arsenal alone. And I’m so sick of having our hopes dashed by meaningless international competitions and mid-season world cups.

Fuck international football.

Johnny 4 Hats

And yeah, I get that Brazilians are passionate about playing for their country. I get that they want to play.

But Martinelli’s bread is buttered at Arsenal. If he’s out for 2 months, loses his place to Sterling / Trossard and is moved on as a result then he might not be getting call ups when he’s playing for Atalanta.

So yeah, in conclusion, they shouldn’t play for their national teams or they might risk not being called up for their national teams.

I dunno. Something something. I just hate this shite.

Can we please play Bournemouth now?

Jeremy

I think we just need to be more ruthless as a club. Sit the players down and say: hey Martinelli, you just won your starting place back. This is a meaningless friendly. Do you need to travel half way across the world to play Panama and risk coming back injured/losing your starting place (and then not playing for Brazil in the competitive games)? Let’s pretend you have a small thigh strain. Hey Bukayo, England will always pick you because you are way better than anyone they have. Do you need to play glorified friendlies against Greece and Finland so Carsley… Read more »

John

To be fair, it is a World Cup qualifier, not a meaningless friendly. But yeah, still absolutely nobody cares.

Jeremy

Yeh just saw it was a qualifier so fair enough. But the point stands for future games with zero importance.

Daveo

World Cup is becoming meaningless as every country on the planet is basically invited to the finals now…

Ebo

I think players have this weird thing where they never think they’re gonna get injured until they do (fans often have that too with players who haven’t yet gotten serious injuries, until one day they do). So since they love to play football, as they should, and they love seeing their national teammates and representing their countries, they’ll stupidly go basically any time they get called up. Like you said we need to be more firm at the club and say, mate, you’re not winning the Copa América in October, so the only trophies you can help win right now… Read more »

Moxrex

Plus they have loads of players better than Saka (Palmer, Foden) so why not give them the chance to play instead of our average player who gets picked by all managers for some strange reason.
I hope Saka is not seriously injured.

A different George

This is all based on the perspective of fans, not players. Think about a good Uruguayan or Hungarian player on a mid-table Prem team. He would probably rather play in a World Cup qualifier for his country than in a meaningless league game against a similar side.

The real problem, as everyone who is not fixated on their on team already knows, is the number of games–whether they are club matches or internationals. That includes stupid friendlies played 6,000 miles from home.

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

Lula doesn’t even want them in the Seleçao. He’s just said Brazilians in european leagues are no good. A win win situation if they don’t go.

El Mintero

Dude I get it but whining about injuries (and shit refs) does my head in. It’s the same risks for everyone and so you build a squad to try and deal with the worst case scenario every time. We’ll see how well we’ve done that next spring…

Matt

Agreed on international football. But the refs don’t seem to carry the same risk for everyone. Not even close.

Dada

I chose to believe this to be a strategic withdrawal.

Mayor McCheese

That was my method, but we still ended up with four kids.

El Mintero

😂

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

We have Nwaneri and Sterling, we will win, no problem.

Bobbert

The grind for more profits from rapacious capitalist organizations? Nah, never ends, they’re avatistic leeches

Hi-brid

Neto presumably can’t face his ‘parent’ club, rather than being cup-tied (for a league game).

onenil

Arteta will need to bring his boots. Is Thierry still available?

I miss santi cazorla

Fans should boycott or boo these non sensical internationals.

charvakan

Well, if you don’t watch the World Cup, you’re in a small minority of football fans. Most of the interlulls are qualifiers for the World Cup, and most people want their nation to be in it and do as well as possible. Supporters of big clubs like Arsenal dread the international games because the big clubs have a lot of players representing their nations, and we can lose players to injury. They’re also unavailable for training with their clubs while away. But for supporters of clubs who don’t have internationals on the roster, there’s no downside. They can go see… Read more »

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

It allows supporters of small teams to experience supporting a big team.

Redbaron

Why can’t they atleast set fixed schedule for matchdays in Interlull? What is the logic behind some players playing last match on Sunday while others are slogging till late Wednesday night? Hold matches on Thursday and Sunday and then release players back to parent clubs.

AlexA

Logic doesn’t come into it. It’s all about the €€€

Arsene Wenger No.1

It is clear that Martin has a serious injury and Mikel does not want to scare the fans. Arteta said Martin has quite significant damage in at least one of his ankle ligaments. If surgery involved we are talking 3 months minimum. This looks like grade 3 or 4. Not the typical ankle sprain where youre back in a month. It should become club policy/law that noone joins their national teams for friendlies. Its like someone taking your expensive car and bringing it back damaged. Unacceptable.

Jeremy

So as I understand it, we now face the prospect of a very tough away game at Bournemouth ( and probably top of the table Liverpool too) without Odegaard, Saka, Martinelli and Havertz. 4 of our best 11 players. Our entire front line is out.

Granit(e) hard!

Yeah, a real possibility of a nightmare, the 4 of them Ffs, what have we ever done to the gods?

Matthinc

And you blame the referees, right?

Jeremy

Huh?! Weird response.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

Don’t kill the messenger but he is saying that we are too kick blaming referees for everything that didn’t go our way on the pitch. Why not add things that happened elsewhere?

Ebo

I think that’s a bit pessimistic. I think Havertz withdrew for precautionary reasons, hopefully Martinelli and/or Saka too. Hopeful at least two of those three will play v. Bournemouth, and the rest back for Liverpool. If necessary with the help of blood magic. Or a deal with the devil…. Oh wait he already made 115 of them with City.

BillyKrystal

Time for Jesus or Sterling to step up. Do we want Jesus left, Sterling right, or vice versa?

Le Groove

Jesus “left”, yes. Left on the bench.

Gilberto Silva’s smile

They can always change side of they want to in the 10 minute – more responsibility for these experienced players

Mark

Something needs to be done about the number of games in International football especially the friendlies and nations league ones. Not only are the players travelling all over the world and when healthy getting worn down in often meaningless matches, but there are so many injuries in every window. We’ve been hit hard by them of course, but other clubs are as well. I think they only way to combat this is for players to start faking injuries right before the international breaks.
