New York City FC boss and former Manchester City Women manager Nick Cushing has ruled himself out of taking the vacant Head Coach position at Arsenal Women.
Nick Cushing just “confirmed” to me in his press conference that he will be with @newyorkcityfc next year. And that there has been no contact from #Arsenal about their women’s team. #DaleNewYork

In his NYCFC press conference yesterday, Cushing said ‘I will be here next year’ and ruled himself out of the job at Arsenal. Our understanding is that a five strong shortlist is in place but that no interviews have taken place as yet.
I admit I find that good news. Though it may not be completely logical, inside I felt really disappointed when it seemed likely we weren’t going to appoint a woman.
Have to admit I’m pleased. Seems that the press believed, or wanted us to believe, that he was a shoe in without consideration for any alternatives. He may or may not have made a good job of the managerial position but just to apoint him without exploring other options would be reckless. I wonder if this is because Edu moving on has opened the upper club management eyes to other possibilities? Anyway there is a shortlist of 5 who presumably do want the job that he does not!
I do not think he is right for the job and what concerns me more is the degree to which he has been overrated in the press and elsewhere. Let’s have one of this top female coaches we all know about.
Generally, I’d agree with you. But who is on that list that’s available for an amount that Arsenal are likely to want to pay? Sarina W?
Let’s hope not! She is another manager who selects players on reputation and not necessarily current form.
Renee Slegers, Jayne Ludlow, Laura Harvey and Casey Stoney for starters. Not sure what you mean about likely to want to pay. Pay peanuts and you get monkeys and there and many of those.
Women aren’t getting the most powerful position in the world even if it is their turn.
Jeez, can they at least get positions in women sports?
I agree that women are never going to be top coaches, if it’s men that always get the job. I don’t think our approach should be : woman coach *per se*. But we are leaders in the development of women’s football. So why not give a lesser known woman manager a chance? That truly sends a message as to what we (Arsenal) want women’s football to be.
Well played….
The last three managers of New York City were Vieira (went to Nice, then Palace), Torrent (Flamenco, then Galatasaray) and Delia (Standard Liege, then Club Brugge). These are massive clubs playing in top divisions, with huge fanbases. The allure of coming back to the UK to manage Arsenal Women therefore is only going to be linked to us being so well supported we can match up against what sides of that level offer, and his affiliation with the City football group inevitably means he will get that level of opportunity. However, if the fanbase appears to be so negative regarding… Read more »
Good.
I hope this was a bit of deliberate misdirection by the club!
Love your optimism regarding Claire Wheatley’s intentions.
