Jesus: I still believe in myself

Following Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League, Gabriel Jesus was his usual candid self.

The Brazil international, who’s been struggling to find his rhythm lately, opened up about his lack of game time and his quest to get back to his best.

It’s become a running theme when he faces the media as if he’s trying to talk himself back into form between appearances.

“I believe that not only me, but any player, all players, want to have more minutes,” Jesus told TNT Sports Brasil. “I’m obviously never going to cause anything in the club.”

Clearly, he’s frustrated by his lot – aren’t we all – but he maintains he hasn’t given up hope of winning over manager Mikel Arteta despite the Spaniard giving him scraps to feed off.

“I’m going to try to demonstrate on a daily basis, in training, and when I get into the games, have my chance, and do my thing and trust that things will happen.

“I’ve always made it very clear that I want to improve, that I want to try to do my best and help Arsenal. Obviously, my moment is not the best, it’s not the moment I wanted, that I would like.

“But as I said, I’m working on my own, trying to do my best, and get more minutes to play, but that’s a consequence of my training, it’s a consequence of the way I get in and leave the decision to the coach.

The 27-year-old is not without a bit of quiet optimism though: “I believe in my potential, and I also know that the fight for my place in Arsenal is big, but I also believe that I can help a lot.”

Whether Jesus can turn talk into match-winning performances remains to be seen, but for now, he’s giving us the classic ‘I’ll do my best’ spiel that every player drops when things aren’t going their way. It’s as much about patience as persistence, and if he can find his form, we’d be only too happy to see him back in full flow.

We love you Gabby. Keep going, it’s all any of us can do day to day. The goals will come.

Yeah, there was a time when we all believed in Jesus. But faith seems to have waned with the worldly things.

Would love to see him in back in form but he can’t (even indirectly, as he is) complain about a lack of minutes if he isn’t delivering.

Fenko

Can he be any worse than Martinelli and Tossard at the moment?
Why are those two playing consistently despite their terrible form of late?
Ever Sterling can not be worse than Martinelli at the moment.
MA stubbornness to mix things up and have a plan B is costing us a lot.

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

Since Raheem came, you’re not alone anymore.

I would like to take a minute to thank Mr Allen for the title of this piece.

Here is my opinion for the cause of our poor results. 1. Odegard missing and not having a proper plan B for this situation. 2. Not having a regular left back due to injuries. 3. I could be wrong, but tactically playing Havertz and Trossard against good teams is a bad idea. I think Havertz should start, and bring in Trossard from the bench.this problem is related to number one. 4. We should ease Merino into the team. I don’t think he is up to speed with our tactics yet. I also feel right now going forward he needs to… Read more »

I guess that there could be an argument for replacing Trossard with Jesus up front, you know just to try something different? But it’s a confidence thing and we need a break, your know like VAR awarding us a penalty or a shot deflecting into the goal instead of wide of the post or a referee who can interpret the laws correctly (a bit of an ask that one).
