Arsenal 3-2 Crystal Palace – player ratings

A second half hat-trick from Gabriel Jesus shot Arsenal into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup this evening.

A bad mistake from Jakub Kiwior saw Palace take an early lead, and in the first half the Gunners failed to really threaten. Mikel Arteta made a couple of half-time changes which really made a difference, and the Brazilian’s finishes were deft, emphatic (although offside), and even more emphatic to put us 3-1 up.

The returning Eddie Nketiah produced a superb header to make the final stages a little spicy, but we held on and and won our place in the semis.

Here’s how the players rated this evening.

I hope Kiwior doesn’t get absolutely hammered for that mistake. I always think that he is reasonably solid for our 4th/5th choice centre half if everyone is fit. Even Gabriel and Saliba have had brain farts at times. A bad mistake, but not enough to write off an Arsenal career for me.

dinosauras

It does seem like one big mistake per 90. But fair enough on being 4th or 6th choice.

Ebo

that hardly seems fair, has he had two, maybe three all season? I think he’s made 14 or 15 appearances so far

dinosauras

Maybe so – I’m just never super confident with him in the back line.

BelgianGooner

He’s going to be fine. Mistakes happen, we won, all good.

Like White and Rice

And he didn’t compound the mistake by panicking and making more errors. He settled down and played well the rest of the way.

Henri Like-a-new-signingsbury

I’d rather see the minutes go to someone from the academy. He’s not at the level of the team.

Maul Person

Err… no. He’s not that bad. There’s no need for hyperbole.

Morrisey fan #1

Every team needs an invincible like Pascal Cygan

Daniel

If you compare him to Gabriel and Saliba he comes up short, but when you compare him to who he replaced in the squad he looks on a different level

beldar77

I mean Saliba had the mistake for the 2nd goal so he’s not the only one

Something about Jesus born at Christmas etc etc.

Pretty scrappy game tbh – looked like everyone struggled to control the ball.

But enjoyed the lack of VAR!

How about a bonus rating for Eddie?:)

Martin

You just knew he’d score when he came on. Every ex striker of ours scores against us.

Like White and Rice

Hopefully he got it out of his system now and won’t score this weekend.

Swifty

Proud to say I never lost faith in Jesus. I always knew he’d come good. Ahem…

It Is What It Is

*Amen

Frosty

Ahem is probably what he means… Plenty people gaging down spoons of humble pie right now!

Ebo

Bonus rating – 10/10 to Eddie for scoring from an incredible header on his return, also playing a stunning Odegaard-ish throughball which his teammmate fluffed, and overall having as perfect an appearance as a sub that he could have against his old club, and thankfully, mercifully it not being enough.

Iufgn

thankyou

BelgianGooner

Seems 3-2 was the score line of the night!

Flash

It was a real surprise to me to see that with a striker playing at GJ’s today level Saka and Odegaard seems to be even more impressive and dangerous.
If somehow we could build something similar on the other side of the pitch – our team would be a real joy to wach playing.

Not to mention a TP, Rice, Calafiori, White, BigGabi, Saliba kinda defensive block.

Lethal.

Martin

First half Nwaneri was in the RWB position and then Odegaard took over that spot. I know we like to overload the right hand side but I’d really prefer it if our most creative players weren’t stuck out there. So many times in this game and recent games we have a huge hole in the centre of the attacking third and it’s surely can’t be a good thing?

Rosapirescastle

That’s where u need a proper no 9 to hold up play and get team upfield. Full credit to Jesus but it’s LF or RF but not no9 for me. Kaisers hold up and brining other players into play aswell as theam forward is only missed when he’s not there .
We need a new LFcan jesus be that guy I dunno but not as a 9

iain

And on the 33rd game he rose again, in accordance with the scriptures. He is Lord.

Well still a ways to go before we get the old jesus back but still. Great to see.

Gooner Ged

As Jesus said
I am the resurrection and the life.
He certainly resurrected his scoring and came to life tonight

TheLimpBar

How do we get rid of the stadium announcer? It’s unbearable. Even away fans are taking the p!ss. Anyone got a petition or something?
I put this on another page too, don’t mean to spam but feel pretty strongly about it – geezer has to chill out or go!

Brettdagooner

Need to fix the ratings in the app.

Joe

Jesus comes good in time for Christmas 🎄
Ps. Blogs, I’m worried about the arseblog app. Keeps on crashing, player ratings don’t work, and it’s no longer in the Play store so can’t reinstall or update? Help! Don’t want to lose arseblog!!

Neál Martin

Martin Ødegaard. He’s the one. Certainly the best footballer at our club if not the league. Worth the admission on his own almost every time. What a pleasure to watch.

A different George

Harsh on Partey, soft on Timber (for the first half) and Nwaneri. Nwaneri obviously has extraordinary quality, and his first instinct is to go forward, which is great. But–not surprising for a teenager–he is often unable to figure out what should come next. It’s unfair to compare him to a player like Ødegaard who is one of the best in the world at finding the next move, but tonight showed how dependent we still are on our captain.

beldar77

Agreed

Anderslimparisverygood

Let’s give Kiwor a break here, up against an in form striker and yes it was a bad mistake but he didn’t do much wrong after that and certainly didn’t hide. If you think back a few years ago and it wa Rob Holding who had made that mistake so early in the game I have no doubts we would have been down to 10 men before long. I would say he is a good squad player to have.

Ebo

not just good but excellent squad player, don’t forget passing is a key component of being an Arsenal centre back and he might be our best passer in that position. And he’s much younger than Gabriel and probably still improving. If he leaves in January or in the summer, as I think he will, we’d be lucky to find someone as good to replace him for anything approaching a reasonable sum for a backup defender.

Like White and Rice

Gabriel Jesus has now only scored 3 goals in his last one game!

Drew

Think you’re being a bit hard on Sterling. He wasn’t spectacular, but one of our better performers in the first half I thought.
