Arsenal draw Newcastle in Carabao Cup semi-final

Arsenal have been drawn against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The two games will take place in January and February ahead of the final which takes place at Wembley on March 16th.

The Gunners will be at home for the first leg, and away in the second.

The last time the sides met in this competition was in January 1996 when two goals from Ian Wright gave us a 2-0 win.

The other semi-final sees Liverpool take on Sp*rs after the latter beat Man Utd 4-3 this evening.

About the best we could hope for. Let’s get to the final and pile more heartbreak on Spurms at Wenbley.

C.B.

6,144 days since there last trophy, let’s hope that keeps going up! 23,258 days since they last won the League…

Arsepedant

The date Spurms last won the title is closer to the Victorian Age (exactly 22,000 days) than to the current date (23,258 days).

The same will be true of the date they last won the FA Cup on September 10, 2081 (32,988 days each way). And it WILL be true on that date because the fuckers will never win anything. Ever.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

No, I want to face Liverpool in that final. Will not increase the chance that Spurs win anything.

Evaristus

Hope we beat Newcastle!

wrightstuff8

Yep, we need a similar performance to when Jorgi ran the show up at their yard a couple of seasons ago. 0-2 to the reds and a trip to Wembley. Lovely stuff.

mikeoz

Would have preferred second leg at home but not a bad draw

Fatgooner

Shit draw: I wanted Spuds – especially after watching their defending tonight.

We need to do the job at home in the first leg: St James’s Park has become a bogey ground for us in recent years.

It will be Liverpool in the final: Spuds are awful.

Up4GrabsNow!

Yup, but now we have an opportunity to avenge the 2001 FA Cup Final loss to Liverpool. That one still ticks me off.

Fatgooner

Me too! I was physically sick when that little c**t Owen nicked that winner.

Mind you: we were incredibly lucky to beat Manure in that 2005 final.

Andy

Liverpool had about three goalies that day

Eric Blair

What was his name, Henchoz? Tosser.

Bobbert

I’d love to get matey fc in the final though, fats. Imagine the half empty wemberly singing about wheels coming off

Ebo

Wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool given their title chase will rotate more than Spurs, want it less and end up somehow losing the tie. But we need to put some pressure on them in the table for that to happen.

allezkev

Yeah, 1987 revisited would be just the ticket…

Fatgooner

I was there. I can still remember the Wembley sun on my face as Charlie’s deflected shot creeped in past Bruce Grobbelaar to give us the winner. The Scousers couldn’t believe that they had lost because up until then they never lost whenever Rush scored and he had put them ahead. That game was massively important in the history of Arsenal Football Club. It was the first trophy we won under George Graham and it gave that group of players the confidence to go on and win much more, including two league titles. That’s why those fans who poo poo… Read more »

Tomiyasu vain

Yep. Ive not quite worked out how the only team without european fixtures to contend with and the only team that has actually beaten us this season is the best draw

Fatgooner

And their fans are absolutely desperate to break their thousand-year trophy drought. They will play a full-strength team in both legs. Arteta will have to play strong teams too if he wants to get through.

AlexA

He would have had to play a strong team regardless of which of the three remaining teams we drew.

TeeCee

A very sp*rsy win. Simple tactic, just be marginally less shit than the opposition.

Tomasi

That last time we met Newcastle in this competition happed to be my first ever gane watching arsenal live. Still gives me goosebumps thinking about walking out onto the terrace and seeing the pitch and the lights and the crowd. And my favourite player scored both goals, what a night 🙂

Zenithreptile

1996? I’d have ripped your hand off to watch Ian Wright score those. I was 13 and all I wanted in the world was to go to Highbury once.

Andy

It was a fucking amazing night particularly as Newcastle were actually pretty shit hot back then.

Qwaliteee

This was the draw I personally wanted; Tottenham in a semi final is not great for the blood pressure – and I’m not getting any younger. The mere thought of Spurs getting to Wembley still makes me feel sick – never mind at our possible expense, so I’ll be rooting for the Scousers in the semis. I want Liverpool in the final. And I genuinely think we can beat them. Spurs can drop dead and continue to rot in their own trophyless filth. Beating Eddie Howe in a semi final will be highly amusing. And watching the scum up the… Read more »

The injuries will be coming for Liverpool, some of their 30+ players can’t keep going 2x a week for 38 weeks, and we saw how badly a makeshift defense performs for them.

Qwaliteee

Everything has a price I guess.

I’d trade Spurs getting to Wembley for Liverpool’s old boys crumbling and subsequently completely fucking up their title push – and us winning the title instead.

And, of course, us smashing the scum at Wembley 10-0 in the League Cup Final…

Rick O'Shea

Seem to remember we played Newcastle away in 2010 in the league Cup, Theo Walcott brace

YGT

Wasn’t the last time we played them in this cup 07/08? Denilson with the banger

Bobbert

Get past the oilers and it’s likely the scouse with how porous that potato defense is…

derek mooney

Newcastle over two legs with the second at their place is just as tough as any team in the premier

Bobbert

Largely down to how ridiculous the away seating situation is, allowing for more shirtless obese orcs to bellow at the ref

Eric Blair

Would rather have got sp*rs. But bring it on.

Bobbert

We can beat them 5-2 in one match, don’t need an a aggregate score 🙂

Runzac

January pretty hectic. 1st Brentford A, 4th Brighton A, Newcastle on the 6th, 12th ManU H, 15th Spuds H, 18th Aston Villa H, 22th CL against Zagreb, 25th Wolves A, 29th CL again – Girona A. 9 games total

Tt gunnr

Im worried about the first three games away, to be fair.
Once we get into the home games against ManUre and so forth, i think we will be on a roll and hard to stop

David Hillier's luggage

Probably the worst draw for us – Newcastle will put a strong side out, need a trophy more than others, don’t have European games and we’ve been terrible at theirs over the past few years so having the away leg second isn’t ideal. Still think we’ll progress, but have to be wise with squad selection. Rather not play Spurs in the final if we make it. Reffing has been shockingly bad this season, I can see Jarred Gillett VARing off a couple set piece goals for us for obstructing the keeper only to award Spurs a last min pen for… Read more »

Tt gunnr

Agree with your first paragraph
After that i want our team to test ourselves against the best in the final.
But if its someone shit like spudz, aww my word, man, imagine knocking them off, what a memorable night that would be

Theo

About the worst team i wanted us to draw for a two leg game. That trip to the far North always leaves us somehow unable to compete to our strengths.
Hopefully we win by an unassailable margin in the first round.

Giuseppe Hovno

God I think Newcastle are my least favourite prem team at the moment in terms of playing style. Hate em. Let’s crush em

Davey

Fuck the dustbin lids!

BLUEBERRY

Time to throw them down the black and white times, where the belong.
