A second-half hat-trick by Gabriel Jesus saw Arsenal earn a 3-2 win over Crystal Palace and a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Born again, resurrected, back from the dead…we’ll let you choose your own divine metaphor for a player who has long been searching for his shooting boots.
It would be remiss not to point out that set-piece FC also scored all three goals from open play on a night when Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard came off the bench to great effect.
Here’s what the managers, players, solitary pundits and stattos made of the action…
Mikel Arteta on his side’s performance…
Really happy, we’re in the semi-final. The game started in a way that we certainly didn’t want to with a very simple goal and then our team had to react and I think we did in a great way, showed a lot of character, so much desire to turn things around. In the first half we lacked some threat, we created two or three big chances but didn’t score and with a few adjustments in the second half we got a grip of the game again and we looked a threat.

Oliver Glasner on his side not doing enough…
When we scored two goals here at the Emirates – it should have been at least a [draw and therefore a] penalty shoot-out. But we weren’t good enough. We are self-critical. I think we didn’t perform at our best level. I mentioned it before at the press conference: we needed to perform at our best level to take the win. We missed several percentages. Out of possession, several percentages. In possession, we lost the ball too easily, too quick, and then the pressure increased.

Gabriel Jesus on winning the game for Arsenal in the second half…
It feels amazing. Obviously, the first half wasn’t our best, but still in the second half we did our job, we created more, we kept the ball more, circulated the ball, made passes and then Martin put in two amazing balls in the end and B as well, and I could finish the action.

Palace’s teenage full-back Caleb Kporha on making his debut…
It was good news for me. At first, I thought no way, but I was just excited to show what I could do. I thought I was doing well in training, and I’ve got the chance to prove myself out there. It was a good moment for me and a joy to play against one of the best teams in the world. It hasn’t really sunk in yet really tonight.

Feels amazing to be back out at the Emirates! Thank you so much for the reception… always grateful ❤️ Onto the semis 💪🏼 @Arsenal pic.twitter.com/T6WbJ9sOOO

Arteta on Tierney making a long-awaited return…
That’s the beauty of football – sometimes it goes in circles. He had to leave and have a loan spell, after a long, long injury as well and day-by-day has earned the right to get some trust from us again that he could help us, that he could be very important for the team, he could impact the team and tonight, he’s certainly done that.

Jesus on telling Odegaard where he wanted the ball…
The quality that Martin has is amazing. He’s a type of a player that can pass these balls and put you in front of the goal. That’s what I was telling him; I said “Martin I know your qualities, so I’ll go in behind. If it’s open, I go, you don’t need to look, I will be there.” He played amazing balls [in behind] and I was able to finish the action.

Martin Odegaard was substituted on when Arsenal were 1-0 down at half-time…
In just 45 minutes, he provided 2 assists, created 4 chances, completed 2/2 dribbles and had 42 touches.

Arteta on what he wants from Jesus after tonight…
It’s now about consistency, so now obviously this is a moment of a spark that will give him so much confidence not only to him but to the team as well, now we can rely on him to change those games and now we need to take it, and give him more games, give him chances because when a player is in that moment it’s important to continue to do that.

Jesus on his ambitions for the season…
I came here to win the Premier League and my first two seasons we were there but for some details. This third season I want to win.

Alan Smith on Jesus’ opener…
Odegaard on as a sub, slide rule pass and that finish [from Jesus] is so subtle. For a player that is searching for form in front of goal it’s a really brave effort actually.

Jesus on public perception of him…
I have scored a lot of goals but sometimes I have this problem with a lack of goals. I can create, I can make assist, I can run and help the team defending. When I score everyone sees, but when I don’t they want their striker to score goals and I agree with that. That is why I am working a lot in training, finishing more, putting myself in a good position to finish the action. I think my hard work has paid off.

We should play Jesus against Palace again this weekend, Guehi loves him.
Alan Smith is right in his comment. That 1st goal was not the finish of a player lacking confidence. So thankful whatever defender that was could not get to it.
When he first chose that finish all I could think was, “oh no, it’s gonna get cleared off the line.” Hopefully this marks a turning point and he can really contribute the rest of the season – the internal solution we so badly need right now!!!
Merry Christmas everyone. Ho ho ho. Who/What’s next on the agenda for the “must moan about something” brigade?
This is the place to discuss and everyone has the right to “moan”. Indeed, I see the problem in the supporters who constantly say everything is okay and we constantly fall short of winning titles with very small margins.
To continue with the latest wave of moans, Jesus scoring three goals does not mean that our goalscoring issues are resolved.
I get that, but often the complaining comes without any recognition of where we have come from. Just 5 years ago we were an absolute mess. To be where we have been for the past 2/3 years is nothing short of extraordinary. It would come across less moany/spoilt/entitled if that was acknowledged
Thank you for adding that context. Moaning is an emotional reaction without context, it’s boring, entitled and uninteresting. Discussion uses context, data and an understanding of underlying factors. We get both on here but we all recognize moaning when we read it.
Entitled?! We’ve spent 650mil last 5 years, more than any other team in the league. Arteta has done great and I hope we have him for a long time. BUT, we need to start winning trophies now simple as that. The errors in the team are pretty obvious, let’s fix them and start winning.
More than Chelsea?
That has been acknowledged enough. I dont see the need to repeat it in every comment. And 5 years is the time many team has done such revolutions.
We’re 3rd inthe league and 3rd in the Champions League, we’re through to the semifinals of the League Cup, we’re dominating every team we play against even if we don’t win. Saka and Odergaard are truly world class and our central defenders are the best in the world. This is all on Arteta. Liverpool are on a great run, fair play to them, but they have had a relatively easy fixture list and have some tough away games to come later in the season. And Man City are shot. So let’s have some positivity.
Okay, so we just come here to praise Arteta? If he himself had the same mentality, he was sacked two years ago.
What “maons” are about is how to get two or three more points and one or a couple of trophies.
Amen, Bayern showed us up last season. We brought in 2 functional squad players in Merino and Califiori. Lot of people on the bus, coolaid in hand, everything is awesome. If you question Arteta they lose it.
This is bleak but I couldn’t watch the game yesterday. I was surprised when I saw his hat trick, but my next thought was that it reminded me of when he scored 4 for City towards the end. Did he even agree to join us at that point or had he already declared he was leaving City? Either way it made me think of that because I still think we need something different there. Of course now he’ll score 30 and lead us to the title and I’ll be wrong as usual.
Jesus has to some extent the genius of the Brazilian Ronaldo, but his G+A record is not at the level of deciding as many matches as winning us the title.
The real Ronaldo before knee injuries was the best player I’ve ever seen. Calm down lad.
I didn’t mean Jesus’s is close to him, more like he reminds me of Ronaldo in some of his actions/runs/shots.
Hopefully we get Sp*rs for the double header semis. Would be nice to avoid travelling to the edge of the universe to face Newcastle. Somehow that trip always seems to do something to our players.
That team ought to be donated to Scotland.
Newcastle, for some weird reason(s), are the only team of the rest, that i would like to avoid.. Bruno, Joelington, Barnes, Bigfoot and the rest of that motley crue, worry me in terms of physicality, possible injuries…
and their smelly herd of shirtless, shearer batty boys annoy me to no end…and
I believe a cup is all they can realistically hope for and aren’t most bent refs from their way, no?
Ha! Well we got ’em… Let’s put an end to this hoodoo. Roll up our sleeves like we did a couple of seasons ago when Jorgi absolutely bossed them. O-2 to the gooners at their patch would do us nicely.
Tierney. So utterly joyed to see him back, and see him “just slot in”. We’ve got so many brilliant players in defence, but when he played at his best, him and Martinelli were perhaps the best “left side” we’ve had in recent years. I’ll be happy when Calafiori comes back, but I am *so* happy for KT to not just be back, but to put in a very good shift. He may be a more “traditional” left, but when we’re looking for a way to balance our left and right side better on the attack, he might be just the… Read more »
Obviously great to see Jesus making an impact at last, 3 top class finishes and unlucky to not get a fourth, where this stands for him is the puzzle Miki needs to find the answer to him playing with Havertz, it’s not coincidence that they are both least effective when playing together. Pleased we played well and won but it’s another 2 games to play in a competition the lowest in our expectations, I can’t recall who won this last year..
