Arsenal 3-0 Dinamo Zagreb – player ratings

Arsenal moved up in third place in the Champions League table after a 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb this evening.

Declan Rice put the Gunners ahead inside 2 minutes, but despite dominating, clear cut chances were few and far between. Kai Havertz doubled the lead in the second half, heading home a fine Gabriel Martinelli cross, before captain Martin Odegaard put some gloss on the scoreline with his first open play goal of the season.

Here’s how the players rated this evening.

Good win, job done. We still need to be more clinical and should have had the game sewn up by half time.

Ben Swain

Good stuff lads. Still looked a bit stodgy at times, but fingers crossed having Nwaneri back will help with that. I don’t want to slate Sterling any more than he has been already, but there’s just so much more fluidity/interchange when he isn’t on the pitch

Ben Swain

Also, chuffed for Butler-Oyedeji. Realistically, it won’t be Arsenal where he plays the rest of his football, but he’s lived the dream!

walleye

He cant play anymore. He just can’t.

Walleye

Sorry I replied to the wrong comment. I was referring to sterling

Frosty

I feel sorry for Sterling. He looks like he’s got lead in his boots, can’t do the simplest things right.

Richard

Sterling is completely ineffectual but I do appreciate his workrate and that technically he’s still quite secure. We’ve had players in recent years who were hurting the team by being on the pitch. He doesn’t help us much, but also isn’t some who I’m afraid will lose us the game.

Goonshow

Bottom line is that Reece would certainly do as much and more out on the right… yet we loaned him out just to bring in another ineffective loan?
What an utter waste of admin effort – send him back and recall Reece, ffs!!!

Exit the Lemming

I’m not even sure the Chelsea fans wanted him to do well when he was there. At least our fanbase is willing him to perform better…aren’t we?

Goonshow

I suddenly got into a complete fury, watching the loanee Sterling do absolutely nothing out wide and thinking about our own loanee, the ever-loyal Reese – what on earth was thinking in sending him away to bring in this ‘waste-of-space’… also on loan!!

Rosapirescastle

Well done to the lads , was bit flat but what do u do , we won and didn’t conced.
Well done Zinky, Ethan and Kiwi for coming in from the cold and from injuries .
Rice hitting form, Jorgi solid as he can be but Gabi Marti had an edge about him , a drive a confidence and a willingness to try things which is probably the most pleasing ….

Thin Gooner

Man – I so want Sterling to do something please…..

El Mintero

Did anyone see Sesko’s goal today? Yes please, sign him NOW!

Tammy Abraham on loan at Milan this season also scored a very nice goal. Just made me think why the fck could we not have taken him on loan rather than useless Sterling…such a bad summer window last year…damn.

Adebanjo

Did you see Rice goal today, did you see Harverts brilliant header. Please sign them ….. Oh they are already here…. Great.

Rufusstan

Says a lot that Nwaneri produced more in 30 minutes than Stirling did in double the time.

Ebo

The Kai slander the last few weeks was honestly a disgrace, not to mention his family. He’s a brilliant player and a classy person, pure Arsenal DNA even if he didn’t grow up with us, I’m so happy we have him. Hopefully two goals in two games and a quite brilliant quick thinking assist will put an end to that.

Rosapirescastle

I didn’t, read any of the kai hate only what some.post in heat of moment on live blog .
Kaiser is a very very important team player and no more than Timber and Martin Od, he s at a loss without Saka , saka makes everyone so much better .
If kai gets a Cunha to drop in and out of 9/10 it’s a support that could help him . Even way cunha drifts in from left makes space for kai. All good and move forward but an on form kai is essential to us winning anything

Ebo

Great point, I think Saka assisted most of his goals last season? And many this one too… so obviously it takes some adjustment without B, but the boys are finding solutions slowly, Kai’s learning to move on the left side of the box, Martinelli is learning to find him there, it’s all slowly coming together.

Ebo

“heat of the moment” isn’t an excuse though, our fans in the stadium are always in the heat of the moment, imagine if they started abusing him like that whenever he had a couple of bad performances. Never mind the fact he was coming back from a bad flu that put him out for a week as far as I know? Whose form wouldn’t be affected by that.

Rosapirescastle

I know but u know the online tolerance and 0 to 100 mph status

Reality check

People around you in the stadium keep you in check if you intend to be silly. It’s on the back of these personal devices that people become all evil. Lack of accountabily brings the worst out of humans.

Tt gunnr

I tend to agree, Kai would be off the charts with his numbers playing with a 9 and a half/ 10.
I personally really like Cunha, it should have been Jesus, but i believe Cunha has more upper body strength, and his decision making and shots on goal are a real threat.
I believe they would compliment each other more than say if we got Sesko.
🎤🎵 Cunha to Kai, my Lord
Cunha to Kai
Ohh Lord Cunha to Kai 🎶

Sephirothevic

Oh Cunha an’ Saka,
What a WONderful phrase,
Oh Cunha an’ Saka,
In the attacking phaaaase…

Axel

It is this thought process that has us on the brink of disaster again this season. Havertz is just an ok player, yes a very honest player put not sharp enough to be winning premierships, we are in desperate need of a stricker.

Earlcourt

a decade ago You expect your box to box to be getting 6 to 8 goals Your number 10 a bit of 6 to 8 and your wing men in double digits And your two strikers topping the charts. Everyone is happy No pressure on a single individual. But nowadays the demand of the play means others can be forgiven if they are falling short of there quota but the main striker is castigated. Hence the birth of the brute 20-30goals high performance striker. We should have gotten one if they aren’t so rare. I like to think of Harvetz… Read more »

Tt gunnr

Between your 8 1/2 and my 9 1/2
Jesus we need a 9

El Mintero

Oh please, so predictable. Online abuse aside, which no one should suffer, the “slander” or rather the constructive criticism, was very much due. He misses way too many chances for supposedly our leading forward. His ranking in the PL scoring charts says it all. He grabs a goal in more or less a training game and suddenly he’s messi again. Why can’t you accept we need better upfront to win the league? He’s not going to be upset you don’t like him anymore…he gets 250k / wk to keep his fragile ego intact!!

Exit the Lemming

Yes, that level of vilification online is disgusting and shouldn’t be allowed but he most certainly ain’t a ‘brilliant player’

walleye

Best I have seen Zinc in forever. If we ever have the fitness to play Kai, Rice and MO as the mid field…watch out. The Pole at CB proved the old adage about not making your team weaker at two spots instead of one. Which is what we did against AV on the weekend. Looked competent except when he needed some excitement to stay awake.

As I have said many times, I love this team’s fight and toughness. Enjoy the ride.

Goonshow

When the most you can say about a player is that he didn’t make a glaring mistake, that kinda says it all. Zinch was positionally better, no complete brain-farts or getting skinned, agree – but that was only because Zagreb didn’t test him at all with a fast-paced winger running at him. Even so, a number times Fast Gabi had to dash back and cover the vacant space on defence because he had wandered off-piste (again!). And he offered precious little of his much-vaunted ‘attacking play-making’ – just put his foot on the ball, killed our momentum and then reversed… Read more »

Mark

Just pray we don’t have to start Sterling again.

Gunnergetback

What’s this game you write of called “dipshit”? 🤔 🤣

A different George

It’s sort of funny when Zinchenko, Jorginho, and Ødegaard are all on the pitch. Might create a chance or two for the forwards.

Exit the Lemming

Zinchenko and Jorginho can look good against bang average sides like Dynamo Zagreb but get found out when pitted against quality opposition. Both were sold by Man City and Chelsea respectively for a reason and have been stop gap squad players at best. Time to move them both on.

John C

Thank god you can change the starting line up depending on the opposition

Goonshow

Jorge was fine… Zinch adds precious little.

Fireman Sam

Decent performances from almost everyone. GM was great at winning corners, even if end-product not quite there. Jorginho had some nice touches of class.

But Sterling, he just doesn’t seem to have the touch any more. He is trying, but it’s really not happening for him. Is he just done? Confidence issue? Either way, at the moment we can’t afford to play him unless we’re really cruising in a game and just need a squad player to see out some minutes.

Ben Swain

Played a key role in the first goal and put the second on a plate for Havertz? Might not have scored, but I wouldn’t say there was any issues with his end product yesterday

Julius

Most important today was that Martin Odegaard scored he really needed that as the ball not been falling for him so important

Ashburton Patriot

I bet it must have felt like an eternity for Nathan on the sidelines, waiting for the ball to go out like that. Good to see him finally get on though.
Can’t remember the last time hale end was this productive tbh…

Jesus of Sao Paulo

So fuckin happy for Ødegaard and especially Kai Havertz. I hope that the heavy load is off their chests and they can now go on a run.

Merlin’s Panini

Good to see Kai on the scoresheet again. People were making so many stupid accusations about him being mentally week. He scored the only goal in a Champions League final and came through so much negativity in his first season with us too. We should get behind him. Rice is also showing how good he is at arriving on the edge of the box. Kiwior is another who gets unnecessary stick, just because he’s not Gabriel or Saliba. Those two are astonishingly good. Kiwior is a perfectly serviceable CB and a fine option as cover. Yes, he had a rusty… Read more »

Exit the Lemming

I agree that KIwior is a bit underappreciated. Yes he’s got that expensive mistake in him but that’s why Areta has limited his game time but still makes him a valuable squad member. It might be telling that he plays most of his football for the Polish national side in midfield?

Goonshow

Both Saliba and Big Gabi have made serious brain-fart mistakes this season, and on more than one occasion. Kiwior is really solid for a bloke who gets so little game time to boost his rhythm and confidence. He also always looks for the forward pass, rather than defaulting to squaring or reversing it.
He is perenially under-rated on here, largely led by Blogs – much like Partey and Trosser.

Arsenalnut

I thought it telling that the commentators had nothing to say, nothing, when a Zagreb kicked Big Gabby in the calf, fell over and pretended to have been fouled himself. The weak and naive ref gave Zagreb a free kick. Zagreb put on a dark arts festival and we looked like honest Abes. We are a completely different team with a healthy Ben White and we miss his play and presence.

Arsenalnut

We might miss Ben as much as we miss Saka.

Crash Fistfight

Huh? He gave Arsenal the free-kick, if you’re talking about the one that left Big Gabby with a dent in his knee.

Arsenalnut

If you are right, my hallucinations are getting worse.

Arsenalnut

Just checked. You are right. I’ve gotten accustomed to our lads getting kicked and having fouls called on them.

Edzo

10 out of 10 for arseblog leaving the dumpster fire that is Twitter. Makes me feel proud.

Modha

Nwaneri did more in his cameo than Sterling did all game. If I were him, I’d be embarressed at being shown up by a kid

Arsepedant

Minus 1,000,000 out of 10 – the away hooligans throwing bottles and garbage at us on corners and throw-ins. The whole section of them should have been removed from the stadium the first time it happened. Cunts.

Augustine

I agree with the comment Axel made about Havertz he’s an ok player and a good Arsenal soul but not good enough to be our main striker. Please Arsenal sign someone who is!!

Brendanm

I thought Kieran Tierney brought a more direct approach to our left side when he came on. I thought he was excellent, good passing and tackling.

Arsenalnut

And he looked fit and strong.

Goonshow

Oh dear. Partey gets a 6.5 and Zinch gets a 7… really Blogs?? Zinch offered pretty much nothing other than the one single slightly pro-active interchange with Fast Gabi shortly before he came off. As you yourself mentioned, he tellingly took the ball forward and then simply took it all the way back again! That, or either just put his foot on ball, killed all momentum and then reverse passed it! Noticeably more forward progress on the left with Tierney on – both with Fast Gabi and Trosser. Thomas invariably looks to move the ball forward and pick a penetrating… Read more »
