Arsenal right-back Laura Wienroither has joined Manchester City on loan until the end of the season. The Austrian has fallen out of favour under new manager Renee Slegers and has not played a single minute since Christmas, with 18-year-old centre-back Katie Reid preferred to her at right-back.
Our information is that Wienroither was told she was not part of Slegers’ long-term plans a few weeks ago. Wienroither told Manchester City’s official website: “I’m really happy to be here. I’m relieved everything’s done now and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with people who trust and believe in me.
“I just hope I can give the trust back. When you have the chance to sign for a big club like City, I don’t think you have to think a lot about it, at least I didn’t.
“I spoke a lot to Therese [Sjogran], I really like her as a human being. She gave me the opportunity to come here, she believes in me and I think that’s what really made me want to sign for City.”
The signing of Jenna Nighswonger at left-back has freed Katie McCabe up to play right-back when required, which has been key to allowing Wienroither to leave.
Congratulations to her. She sounds a little bruised so I hope she recovers soon and can build up her confidence and fitness.
Best of luck to Tiny Tank. Thanks for everything.
Although the 3-2 home defeat to United a couple of years ago is a painful memory, the high point was Laura’s great goal! Thank you and best wishes for the future.
