Arsenal right-back Laura Wienroither is set to join Manchester City on loan for the rest of the season in a deal that is separate to Arsenal’s bid to take Chloe Kelly on loan. Our understanding for some weeks has been that the player was told that she did not figure in the plans of Renee Slegers.
Wienroither has not played any minutes since Christmas while 18-year-old Katie Reid has played in both full-back positions ahead of her. Slegers likes full-backs who can invert into midfield and Wienroither doesn’t really fit this mould. Arseblog News asked Slegers about Wienroither after the first game after the Christmas break against Crystal Palace because, at that point, we understood the club were open to letting her go.
‘It is about how we want to position ourselves and what quality we need but yeah Laura is fit, both Katie Reid and Laura are fit,’ was her answer after the Crystal Palace game. After the Brighton game, we directly asked whether Wienroither would still be at the club after the January window and she answered, ‘At the moment, yes. But we won’t comment on anything about the transfer window.’
We believe there is a good chance of this deal going through and City are in need of defensive reinforcements. The signing of Jenna Nighswonger frees Katie McCabe up to play at right-back too when required.

Maybe Laura is the deal that had the Chloe offer accepted. I like Kelly, score the winning goal at Wembley but will have to wait to see where she fits in.
