Shrewsbury confirm premature end of Sagoe Jr’s loan

Shrewsbury Town have confirmed that Charles Sagoe Jr has been recalled from his loan by Arsenal.

The 20-year-old winger returns to London after making 18 appearances for The Shrews, including 13 in League One.

While the recall might seem early, it’s not uncommon for Arsenal to reassess loan spells at the halfway point of the season, possibly with the intention of finding a new loan opportunity or bringing players back to bolster the squad.

In Sagoe Jr’s case, the recall could be related to Arsenal’s current injury concerns. With Bukayo Saka sidelined for a couple of months, Raheem Sterling recovering from a knee injury, and Ethan Nwaneri picking up a muscular problem during the weekend’s match against Brighton, the youngster, who made his senior debut in the Carabao Cup last season, may be needed to provide additional cover.

Ismael Kabia, 19, was on the bench on Saturday, indicating the need for reinforcements. Arsenal face a busy schedule with seven more matches to navigate in January.

I’ve been thinking a lot since the United Liverpool game. We absolutely have to go big this January. We have to. We have to spend +£50m on a Saka replacement.  We might never get this opportunity again. Liverpool will spread themselves too thin and run out of steam. City are far from invincible. This is it. We have the money. We have the opportunity. We have to do it. If we overpay for a player, we overpay. You can’t put a price on our first title in 21 years.  I’m not always a massive advocate of going big in January.… Read more »

Gooner Reg

I’m not against that at all, but the chances of it happening seem slim to me. We need the right player to be available at a ‘reasonable’ price. If we can get someone of the right quality then fantastic, but it won’t be easy and I won’t hold the club culpable if it doesn’t happen.
We need something though, that’s for sure – even just a bit of luck would be good right now.

Johnny 4 Hats

Yeah. I wouldn’t hold the club responsible either. I know this isn’t FIFA. Big deals can take years to cement. But we do have funds. Funds which would otherwise be spent in the summer. But by then, it might be too late. Europe is on its arse financially. Everyone bar Real and PSG seems to be up to their necks in debt. Is there really no way we couldn’t get a Raphinha? Or a Kvaratskhelia? Or a Leao? Or Nico Williams and bang him on a huge wage? I know. I’m living in cloud cockoo land. But we are so… Read more »

Henri Like-a-new-signingsbury

Why would you bang Nico Williams on a huge wage? His stats are worse than Martinelli’s.
He looked great for Spain in the Euros but other than that he’s not been amazing.

Bobbert

He plays for bilbao, who have less talented players than Spain do. Put him at arsenal and he’s bound to be more productive, hm?

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

There was a winger who apparently failed at Juventus then became king Henry XIV.

Johnny 4 Hats

I hear what you’re saying, I do. But the talent is so obvious.

Kai’s numbers were appalling but Arteta could see the player inside.

And imagine the boost to the other players a signing like that would be.

But yeah. There are probably better options. I just love that release clause. Makes the whole thing so bloody temping as you don’t even have to negotiate with the club.

Roy Blamey

Just the player. Just because you trigger the release clause doesn’t mean he will sign, and he’s holding out for Barca unfortunately.
I hear Osimhen is a Chelsea fan, but I’d still go for him.

Bobbert

We could have mbeumo tomorrow for 60m on 80k a week, and he has plenty of resale if he doesn’t work, out or even if he does and we want to make a profit as he’s still young enough.
There are plenty of other premier league experienced players out there too if you’re willing to look. Ndaiye at everton could be handy in a couple of positions, for instance.

Johnny 4 Hats

I completely agree. I do think you get your pants pulled down a bit going prem mid season.

I’m not totally convinced that Mbeumo goes for £60m. They wanted £100m for Toney and Mbeumo seems a lot better rounded footballer.

But I’d be well up for it! Basically I’d be happy to pay an extra £10m to move a summer target forward to a January acquisition.

Eric Blair

Why do we need a ‘unicorn’ player that’s perfect in every way? We just need a good player who can contribute immediately because at the moment we can’t even put any forwards on the bench. We needed someone before Saka’s injury, now it is imperative.

gooner

Hey Saka’s +£50m replacement. Remember when we told you about 6 weeks ago when you signed that you are Saka’s replacement? Guess what, we were just kidding. You were actually cover and now you have to sit and watch from the bench. The Don is back

Eric Blair

Er, 50m will get you a good squad player, not a Saka upgrade.

Johnny 4 Hats

There is no Saka upgrade. There just isn’t. I’m not saying we just go out and find another Saka. It’s impossible.

But let’s find a £60m attacking whizz who, when we sub Saka, it won’t look like we replaced Leo Messi with Eric Djemba-Djemba.

Sephirothevic

Well, ok, but then Saka comes back and 50M is benched? On top of that, Saka quality players are 100M (Saka himself valued at £120M on Transfermarkt). For me the ideal would be to spend that on a striker who’s worth it. If we need a stopgap other than Raheem, we send him back and borrow somebody else.

Johnny 4 Hats

Mate, I’m so done with this “but if we sign him, what happens to…” We sometimes seem more worried about a player being benched than us winning a trophy.

United won the treble in ’99 with Yorke, Cole, Sheringham and Solskjaer competing for two positions. I don’t remember anyone feeling concerned for any of those player’s minutes.

We want protection for Saka. We think he’s overplayed. But we can’t sub him for some bum who is a quarter of the player Bukayo is. So we need a fantastic second choice who would get loads of game time.

Merlin’s Panini

Don’t forget we even had Bergkamp, Henry, Kanu and Suker in 1999-2000 then swapped out Suker for Wiltord in 2000-2001.
We’ve had four great strikers fighting for two positions too. What was always fun was when Wenger threw them all on at once sometimes.

Johnny 4 Hats

Don’t you dare forget Francis Jeffers 😅

Roy Blamey

Usually at Wembley in “home” CL matches. Fun times.

Sephirothevic

Woah, I give zero effs about the 50M’s feelings. I hear you about it being a fantastic second choice. I hope it can happen! But if say the budget is 100M, I’d rather it goes all for a top class striker, rather than 50M for an ok striker and 50M for half a Saka. It could be argued either way of course, and I have no idea what the actual budget is.

Giuseppe Hovno

I’d rather spend 100mil on a left sided odegaard clone

Eric Blair

The squad needs a minimum 2 forward signings, possibly 3 depending on departures.

Sephirothevic

We’ll a DNA sample to clone him…

Henri Like-a-new-signingsbury

We need squad depth. There’s plenty of minutes to go around!

Sephirothevic

Agreed. I’d rather buy somebody with the potential to bench Havertz or Trossanelli on a regular basis though. Dreaming, obviously.

A different George

I know this isn’t your main point, but I wanted to add that I think we can see the signs that Liverpool’s extraordinary run is slowing because their defense is so thin. Konaté, in his return from a long injury, was left on long after it was clear he was exhausted and could no longer cover the Liverpool left (you know, where Trent plays) because there was no one else available. This doesn’t mean they will collapse, but they will drop points. If we get help in January–and Liverpool do not–then I believe we can overtake them.

Jimbo1

To be fair he is also less likely to get game time under the new manager Gareth Ainsworth. The Shrews are in a real dogfight to avoid relegation and probably need some tough old pros who know how to get stuck in to have a chance of survival. A nippy young winger with a few clever tricks may not be what is needed by the club right now.

David Hillier's luggage

His loan to Swansea last season wasn’t particularly fruitful in terms of gametime either, I wonder if a loan abroad to a more technical league is on the cards/would do him well?

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

Nobody talking about Sagoe? He might save our season. I am getting desperate.

If I had a Mikel

I hope he has a great impact but realistically he’s a 20 year old called back from loan to a league one side where he started 6 games in all competitions (with 8 substitute appearances) in which he scored and assisted 0 goals.

arseblog

I don’t think he’s going to be part of the solution

Austin Bud

where is ryo miyachi when we need him

Ebo

If Mikel really thought he could replace Saka he would’ve recalled him two week sagoe

Sephirothevic

Yeah, looks like it sagoeing that way.
