“The team did great” – Jesus and Martinelli react to comeback win at Brentford

After Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Brentford, two of the goalscorers, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, faced questions from TNT Sports.

Here’s what they had to say…

On the message from Arteta…

GJ: I think the team did great today. To come here and play the way we played is amazing, not just because of the result, of course the most important thing is the three points and we did it, but the most important thing was the way we reacted. To come back here against a tough opponent is always difficult and we did it.

On the timing of his goal…

GM: I’m always expecting the ball to appear to me to score. I was a little bit lucky in that moment, it was just in front of me, I controlled and just put it in. I’m really happy with the performance.

On celebrating with the fans…

GM: The support that they give us is just amazing, we just want to say thank you to them for coming and supporting like they did. We’re just happy with the result.

On the secret to his turnaround in form…

GJ: I think, keeping working [is key]. Everyone at the club can tell, you guys [as well], how I work every day, not just me, everyone. But me personally, I don’t give up, I always try, Arsenal is not easy, to play for a big club like Arsenal, but like I said, I was playing good when I had the chance but I was not scoring. Now I can score and I’m very happy. I want to keep scoring to help the team.

On Jesus having his shirt ripped before the end…

GJ: That’s the Premier League, I don’t want to talk about fouls and stuff but as you can see, the ref gives a foul [to them], how is that possible? But it’s ok, I’ll be there always to fight for the ball and fight for this huge club.

On Arsenal’s attackers collectively covering the loss of Saka…

GM: No one can replace him, he’s one of the best players in the world. We know our potential, we know the team we can have, we trust in ourselves and we are going to try our best for the club and for B as well. I’m sure he’s happy with the result.

On whether Arsenal have what it takes to win the title…

GJ: Yes, for sure. The previous two years was amazing, we didn’t win the league but we were there fighting, to play this competition is already hard, imagine to fight for the title. I’ve been there, I can see this team is great now, everyone is a good player, amazing players, I’m sure we can go there and fight for the title. It’s still early, we just need to keep playing well and keep winning the games, that’s it.

I thought Martinelli was sharp all match and the goal was really well taken. Gabriel Jesus has, I think, shown pretty conclusively that it wasn’t about Palace somehow. Can he continue like this for the next dozen matches? I don’t know–but if he doesn’t, it won’t be from lack of effort.

We give up so easily on players sometimes. These lads are both top tier talents, they both went through a slump, but this isn’t the Wenger era when he kept going on about finding a solution from within but that basically meant hoping for someone like Denilson or Gervinho or TGSTEL to find world class form. Here we have players who have already shown they can be stars at the top levels of football, and they just need to get back to it.

Skinny Ricki

100%. Even some of the most reasoned, insightful Gooner commentators were writing Jesus off permanently.
