Newcastle 2-0 Arsenal – player ratings

After a brilliant win against Man City, Arsenal came crashing down to earth at St James’ Park, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle to lose the Carabao Cup semi-final 4-0 on aggregate.

Jacob Murphy put the home side ahead in the first half, before Anthony Gordon doubled the lead early in the second after a mistake from David Raya. If you’re being generous, you might argue we left it all out there on Sunday and the tank was empty.

In reality, Newcastle have had the measure of us over both legs, and we haven’t had anywhere near enough on the bench to change either of the games. We didn’t play well enough to deserve a final.

Here’s how the players rated this evening.

I had the misfortune to sit through Sky coverage of the game and the main commentator Seb Hutchinson was positively giddy with joy throughout the whole of the second half. He could hardly stop himself giggling when talking about how Arsenal were going out of the cup and at the end even had the gall to say we’ve been humbled. Gary Neville was the co commentator and while I sometimes watch his podcast and he seems reasonable enough there he was relentlessly hostile in everything he said throughout the game. I know it was a bad defeat and we’re out… Read more »

BelgianGooner

Well it’s Sky Sports what did you expect ?

Tombo

I like to listen to the arsenal.com commentary and it’s less biased than most of the media haha

Joker

I don’t find the in-house Arsenal commentary that great usually but at least it isn’t full of vitriol towards us. If you’re able to watch games with it you’re probably making the right choice.

RedHotHornBlower

Better to nuke them and listen to a much more balanced commentary on Arsenal.com.

Gunnergetback

Gary Neville is not a professional. His a miserable, bitter, twisted littld bin muncher of a man. His nasal tones make me want to feel my ears with quick setting cement. His holier than though attitude can go suck my balls.
In case this was too subtle- he is a proper bellend.

Joker

I’ve never really felt too much antipathy towards Neville but tonight was an eye opener. He just wouldn’t stop getting little hateful jabs in throughout the whole game. It didn’t even sound like there was any joy in him either like with Hutchinson, just bitterness.

Gooner1317

He was a RB he had to deal with Henry and Pires combined, he’s obv gonna hate us for life its ok plus utd are closer to relegation rn than they are to arsenal lol

George

Which is probably why he did what he did to Reyes (RIP). Disgusting piece of shit-stained belly lint.

George

Agreed. Horrible rodent-faced Manc goblin, both as a player and commentator.

Yiannis

Most of second half I watched on mute!

Joker

I probably should have done the same.

Vonnie

I switched off the sound after about ten minutes, Sky is so anti Arsenal it makes me sick.

Joker

I wonder how much of the anti Arsenal bias is covered up by how well we generally do these days and how seldom we lose. They seemed to relish the opportunity to stick the knife in tonight.

Mark

The commentary was spot on,.you were humbled and had zero ideas, arteta just stood their as usual with that look on his face saying ‘err what do I do, it’s not working’
Meanwhile Howe was the exact opposite because he is a decent proven manager

Get over yourself, it’s just the normal end of season crap from you lot,
Still you can be happy with being 2nd again which is enough for the fans 😆😆

Chippy

Hi mark, interesting point. Go fuck yourself

Arron

You are owned by an evil anti-freedom state. You lose no matter what. You sold your soul, and you know this truth. So yeah, fuck off.

onenil

We emptied the tank against City.

BelgianGooner

Or maybe the 16 (18?) games from December to end of January with no brake ?

onenil

I’m not going to mark down a team that has given its all in recent weeks.
Let them have a holiday and come back refreshed and ready to go again.

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

No, we’re just not serial killers.

Hurensohn

We always revert to the tiredness excuse when we don’t turn up. It was just like Bayern last year, we made mistakes at the back because of nerves and we didn’t have the character to step up and create at the other end either.

Confidence and mental strength play a massive part in important games like this. But go ahead blame injury and fatigue again…

Wengerball

Borderline reckless to have players play this many games. It’s really not a surprise they are dropping like flies…

MarcelloValerio

Arteta is one of the best managers in the world it seems, but…the one thing i don’t like is that he reverts to the top dogs when we get far in the carabou, like, the players that got us there were the kiwiors and tierney (crystal palace game) – why change it up – this cup is for the squad – it’s the mickey mouse cup. Let the scum from up north crawl out of the drain and sing at wembley, and watch their players get reds against the reds.

BelgianGooner

Would deduct a point from Raya for his terrible haircut. Even worse than his failed pass to Rice

Ealing

That was the perfect pass to signal : mister the game is done, get the subs in

Aleksander Włodarz

why oh why I had to watch it…Northern reality check

Fertig

Tactically Newcastle were soo astute – sitting deep, no space to play through balls through the middle or quick exchanges. Always happy for our wingers to have the ball wide and dealing with crosses all day long with three big center defenders. And tremendous pace with Isak and Gordon on counter. We never stood any chance today with 2-0 advantage on their side and no incentive to play

Kevin Richardson / Jorginho

Newcastle have our number. Unfortunately.

Joker

It does seem that way. They’ve been comfortably the better side in each of the last three encounters.

KingKolo

Needed to change the team. They’ve given their all for us so far this season and there’s still lots to play for. Dubai refresh next.

Omaha

People complaining about congested fixtures like we’re the only club in Europe to have experience that.. stop the bull crap. That’s not an excuse anymore.

Fertig

But we objectively had the smallest squad? That’s the complain – mind you, I don’t blame injuries as that’s just part of the game. But our incredibly failure to respond to fixture congestion and injuries by buying the players we desperately need. Next season when Havertz is out with a big lay off (hope not!), Arteta will complain about the load on his body over two last seasons but that will be down to the club and not a coincidence.

Up4GrabsNow!

Dubai here we come!

Cranky Colin

Guimares is a proper little bully, and he was likely to injure someone, but thankfully he didn’t. ( maybe Tross)……… I don’t think it was the right night to stick it to him…… but I think he’s gonna get nailed , next time we play them, and yes the Arsenal offender will get sent off but I’ll be fucking delighted. Trippier mite get the same treatment and we go down to 9. It’s a fantasy of mine. I really felt some of what I watched from Newcastle tonight was Shawcrossesque……. Those wild follow through tackles are dangerous and we weren’t… Read more »

Fertig

Umm Guimares elbowed Jorginho in the head needlessly several match-ups ago and we still haven’t gotten near him in subsequent matches? He’s not a cynical old style dirty destroyer midfielder (although dirty nonetheless). He’s top class player with the ball and tactically. The only way for us to get one over him is to actually play better football all around and win?

geek_gooner

January transfer window
Ins: –

Martinelli went off with injury. Which looks like it’s going to keep him off the side for a while.

Can anyone remind me why we let go ESR and Nelson in the summer? Please don’t tell me it was done to make funds to sign Merino. I refuse to believe that.

Honestly, it was kind of fun to watch how the team with a proper striker can perform. In the first 20 minutes of the game, Isak was like a one-man army.

Hurensohn

Because they weren’t good enough to get game time. ESR most recent lasting contribution was not doing enough to prevent either of the 2 Villa goals last season.

Fertig

Is Sterling the worst player to ever play for us in the Emirates era? I can’t think of worse – even Willian was marginally better. The guy squares against his full back and brings the ball at walking pace EVERY SINGLE TIME! And then when the defense is fully back in position, just returns the ball to the closest player. Honestly I think I can defend against this Sterling. I actually think he’s one of PL’s new era all-time great but he’s painfully finished

Fertig

Maybe Almunia

Ealing

under Arteta, Willian

JustAFan

Dissapointment, but it is just a game. At least we were part of the only four teams still competing for the trophy. This is an achievement in itself. Let’s be reasonable and thank them for doing the best they can under the circumstances. COYG!

Unknown

Newcastle seems to have our number same way we have City number. They sit deep and disciplined in the block because it’s a known fact we struggle to break that down even with clubs that have less quality opposition. Both cup games, Newcastle were faster out of their block onto counters, they were stronger into challenges, faster to the ball, defended great, and they converted their opportunities into goals. I’m dissapointed we lost and we’re out but we didn’t lose to a horrible team. I have to say that.

Tomi-Goji

Makes me hate them all the more.
Painful to watch Isak playing for them, that strike for the disallowed goal was an absolute zinger

Strangeman

I’m not very bothered about going out of this cup, more concerned about how.
It has been a silver plated wooden spoon for years. I’d rather we push Liverpool all the way and put up a showing in the CL than win a trophy which, for decades has had no real merit. Yeah, would be nice but it’s not the one we ‘really’ want.
If it’s a Sp*rs, Magpie final noone cares other than them. If it’s Liverpool and Arsenal are right behind them in the league, does Slott go all out to win?

A Different George

Behind 2-0’in the tie, it’s almost inevitable we would be wide open at times and relying on Saliba/Gabriel plus Raya with little help. Lewis-Skelly was nowhere to be seen for Isak’s disallowed goal and left Murphy completely alone to pounce on the deflection. He’s 18 and as wonderfully as he played on Sunday, today it showed.

Mark

The only bright side is we have a bit of a break now to recover and can put our full focus on the league and the CL.
